HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 01/02/19CALL TO ORDER — Chair Reza Jr. called the meeting to order at 5-00 p.m. at the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. ROLL CALL — Commissioners Carlos Reza Jr., Jeanne Roy, Virginia Blitz, Dale Carter, Billiot Tone, Director Darlene Bradley, and Curator Dana Hicks PUBLIC COMMENTS: There were none. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Tone reported that she had visited the Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Commissioner Carter elaborated that he also went to Santa Fe, New Mexico on a Traveler's Club group excursion. Commissioner Blitz reported that the Friends of the Museum met in December and were present for the Snow Festival festivities at the Museum. She also finished a National Daughters of the American Revolution grant for the Gilb Museum. This grant would provide matching funds for the Friends of the Museum to purchase a touchscreen kiosk for the Veterans exhibit for the Museum. The Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated their 65th anniversary in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of the National Daughters of the American Revolution with an event at the Gilb Museum a few years back and this was included as part of the grant writing narrative. DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley reported that interview's for the Museum Education Coordinator were still underway with three more interviews next week. Staff is hopeful that a conditional offer can be made before the end of the month and the new person can be on board in February. She also provided information on the upcoming two-day Story Center workshop. This grant -funded program provides individuals in the community to learn how to setup and record a family oral history or memory. All supplies will be provided and sign-ups are currently underway. The Mayor's Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for February 7, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. Former Mayor, councilmember, and Museum Foundation Board member, Jim Helms will be the guest speaker. Ms. Bradley also mentioned that she attended the Arcadia Historical Society Board meeting and the Arcadia Chinese Association's Gala Fundraising Event in December. B. Reports from the Curator: Curator Hicks reported on the upcoming Coffee Talk on February 27 2019 at 10:00 a.m., featuring Franklin Cheng VP of Taiwanese American Historical Society. His talk will feature the History of Taiwanese in the San Gabriel Valley. There is also a Scrapbooking Studio scheduled for this Friday. It is offered monthly on the first Friday of the month in the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. The Friends of the Museum will meet tomorrow and have invited three new potential board members. Dr. Hicks also reported that the Jenny Fung exhibit Lines in Arcadia was coming down and the new Transitions. - Photography of Julie Grace Immink will be opening with an opening reception next Saturday, January 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The spring artist, Kruti Shah will follow in March and will most likely be at the upcoming Spring Soirees. Besides the two temporary exhibits at the Museum, Dr. Hicks is also installing exhibits at the Library, City Hall, and City Council Chambers. The City Hall exhibit will feature Santa Anita Park Winkers and Blinkers. The City Hall exhibit will feature historic trinkets from past businesses in Arcadia. She also reported that Friends of the Museum board member and Museum volunteer Marilyn Delao will begin work on the Women's Club scrapbooks. She will begin scanning some of these items into the Museum's PastPerfect database so that they will be more accessible and searchable. Starting this month, the Museum is featuring a new Arcadia Immigration Story Project, inviting the community to write a 300 -1000 -word essay as to why they moved to Arcadia. Anyone that lives in Arcadia is encouraged to participate. Once enough stories are collected, there will be a Faces of Arcadia temporary exhibit installed for the public to view. The Library's IT staff person, Peter Mercado has been updating the Museum's website to include all of the 2019 Museum events. Dr. Hicks also mentioned, besides the upcoming programs, virtual exhibits and Museum information would also be enhanced and included on the website. This will encourage virtual visitors to visit the Museum or those that have visited the Museum in person, to explore further some of the exhibit information online. New this year, is a Speaker's Bureau featuring Dale Carter and two other Museum volunteers that have extensive research knowledge on Arcadia topics. They are available to give talks to local groups and there is no charge. C. Update on American Association for State and Local History StEPs, program, section 2: Audience: Curator Hicks had no reportable information on this at this time. CONSENT CALENDAR a.
