HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 03/06/19CALL TO ORDER -- Chair Carlos Reza, Jr. called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. in the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Carlos Reza, Jr., Jeanne Roy, Virginia Blitz, Dale Carter, Billie Tone; Director of Library and Museum Services Darlene Bradley; Acting Curator Stevy Hernandez; Library Services Manager Roger Hiles. REPORTSCOMMISSION MEMBERS ,/ LIAISONS Commissioner Blitz, as liaison to the Friends of the Arcadia Museum, shared that the group would be meeting on March 7. She also reported that she had met Acting Curator Hernandez at the Kruti Shah reception on March 2 and added that the new exhibit was beautiful. Commissioner Carter reported that he had spoken at the Arcadia Women's Club as part of the Museum's new Speaker's Bureau. DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Report from the Director: Director Bradley introduced Acting Curator Stevy Hernandez to the Commission. Ms. Hernandez was formerly with the Fowler Museum at UCLA. She was hired as our new Museum Education Coordinator but has been appointed Acting Director while the recruitment for a new curator is underway. Director Bradley added that Laura Henneforth had been hired as guest curator to help with taking down the Julie Grace Immink exhibit and setting up the new Kruti Shah exhibit, which she invited the Commissioners to visit. Director Bradley reported that actress Debbie Turner, who played Marta in the movie The Sound of Music, had donated a sample of the curtain fabric used in one of the movie's key scenes, as well as a book about the film. Julie Harris, daughter of Tony Antista, had donated some historic photos from her father. Some Arcadia High School track and field memorabilia was also donated. B. Report from the Curator: Director Bradley reported that she had done the report for January -February after Curator Hick's departure, and that she'd made some changes from the format used in the past. She announced that the new Speaker's Bureau was off to a good start and thanked Commissioner Carter for his speech to the Women's Club. Director Bradley stated the Silver Circle program to honor the City's top volunteers as well as the members of boards and commissions will be held on March 28. She added that she would put out a volunteer log -in sheet to help track the participation of Museum volunteers. C. Staff ate: Director Bradley reported that the recruitment for the new curator would close on March 21 and that she hopes to have the new curator in place for the History Symposium in May. D. Programs and •its: Director Bradley-• that the Scrapbooking Studio program has history of Taiwanese Americans in the San Gabriel Valley. The Julie Grace Immink exhibit has been taken down and the new Kruti Shah exhibit has gone up in its place. Future programs will include a Cinco de Mayo event and a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Santa Anita Park. Acting Curator Hernandez reported that she was planning some new children's programs for the summer. E. Budget: Director Bradley reported that at the direction of the City Manager, departments are preparing two budget scenarios for the coming fiscal year: a flat budget with few changes, and a budget including a five percent reduction, which she noted would mean a $200,000 reduction for the Department on Library and Museum Services. Chair Reza asked if the Museum certification program was on hold, and Director Bradley stated that it would be on hold until the new Curator is on board. F. Flyers/articles/attachments: Chair Reza Jr. commented that the Thailand program flyer looked nice. a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of January 2, 2019 Recommended action: Approve Chair Reza noted that the actual date of the meeting was January 2, and asked that it be corrected. Commissioner Tone moved to approve Consent Calendar Item "a" as corrected, which was seconded by Commissioner Roy, and carried on a voice vote.
