HomeMy WebLinkAboutLB Minutes: 01/18/18LIBRARY ••-r OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES THURSDAY, JANUARY 18,2018 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Elizabeth Renfrew called the meeting to order at 4:34 p.m. in the Library Conference room. ROLL CALL: Trustees Barbara Delphey, Janet HasBrouck, Joanna Liang, Elizabeth Renfrew, and Alice Wang; Councilmember Tom Beck (City Council Liaison); Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley (Secretary); Library Services Manager Roger Hiles, Library Services Manager Pat Smith. CLOSED ESSIO A closed session, pursuant to Government Code Section 54057, was held to conduct a performance evaluation of the Director of Library and Museum Services. REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS Trustee Wang reported that she attended the annual gala of the Arcadia Chinese Association, and noted that Trustee Liang, who is also a member of the ACA, had played an important part in the success of the event. Trustee HasBrouck reported that she had attended part of the Library's Staff Training Day and noted that it was great to see the library staff all together in one place, working out procedures and methods for future programming. Trustee Delphey said that she had also attended some of the training, and was impressed by the collegial atmosphere of the event. Chair Renfrew added that she was happy to see the level of activity shown by current library programs, particularly the Adult Recess program, and that she hopes to be able to attend more programs in the coming year. Councilmember Beck reported that the ACA gala had featured outstanding entertainment. He also reported that there will be elections for the city council in two of the new council districts coming up -in April. REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR Announcements/Statements/Reports a. Director's Update: Director Bradley reported that Library Aide Jackie Chen had passed away on New Year's Day after a long battle with heart disease. Director Bradley also reported that the Library received a $100 gift from a Ms. Morassini, $5,000 from the Seaver Endowment, and an additional gift from the family of former Library Director Jackie Faust -Moreno. Director Bradley also reported that the proposed fees for the Passport Service will be going up for a City Council vote on February 6. b. Monthly Report Statistics: November 2017: Chair Renfrew commented that the numbers showed that things had been busy. c. Monthly Report Statistics: December 2017: Trustee HasBrouck noted that December had been a banner month for the Library. d. Monthly Report Narrative: November/December 2017: Chair Renfrew said that she was impressed that children had read over 11,000 books as part of the Cover -to -Cover program. Trustee HasBrouck stated she enjoyed the second grade teacher's statement of appreciation for the TumbleBooks service. . Financial Report: November 7: Director Bradley reported that spending was on track for this time of year. f. Tech Center Update: Director Bradley stated that construction is almost finished, and that last major event scheduled is the installation of the new doors, planned for this Friday. g. Staff Update: Director Bradley reported that Danielle Guerrero has been appointed Principal Librarian for Adult and Teen Services, and that part-time Librarian Melissa Camaiore will be promoted to fill Ms Guerrero's former full-time librarian position. Director Bradley also announced that four part-time Library Clerks have been hired for the upcoming Passport Service, and that the recruitments are continuing for the four vacant part-time Library Aide positions, as well as the vacant part-time Senior Library Technician position. Director Bradley also reported that Library Technician Shu Wen Tam, will be retiring in February after more than 32 years with the Library. h. CA State Library Community Conversations About the Arts Grant: Director Bradley reported that the Library received this grant, which will pay for a facilitator to conduct a focus group to help determine community attitudes towards art in public life. The Library also received a selection of books as part of this grant. i. CA State Library Innovation Station Grant: Director Bradley announced that the Library had received a $10,000 Innovation Station grant from the State Library, which will be used to purchase two oral history production systems and a scanning station. j. Staff Training Day: Directory Bradley said that the annual Library Staff Training Day, held on Monday, January 15, had been a success. Training topics included the traditional early morning blood-borne pathogen presentation, followed by the hands-on fire extinguisher training held in the parking lot. Next, there were some ice -breaking activities, the Director addressed the staff on "the State of the Library", and there was a craft project from Teen Services Librarian Debbie Marks, followed by a lunch break. Afterwards, Librarian Melissa Camaiore did a presentation on the LibraryAware publicity service and the Canva graphics site, and Information Services Supervisor Peter Mercado and Library Services Manager Roger Hiles demonstrated the Library's new Lulzbot 3-D printers and Oculus Rift virtual reality system, all obtained with grants from the State Library. Finally, Director Bradley hosted a video presentation on strategies for working with mentally ill patrons. Souvenir keychains made during the technology demonstration were presented to the trustees. k. Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Director Bradley passed out the Museum Annual Calendar and reported that there would be a symposium on the 100th Anniversary of the Ross Field balloon school on May 5. She also noted the "Home on the Range" exhibit about the rancho owners of Santa Anita opened on January 13. The upcoming Coffee Talk in February will feature Gene Glasco on "Fight On Arcadia: The Life and Times of Tony Antista. 1. Staff Reports to the Council: a. Purchase Order with Yamada Enterprises for Phase 11 of New Furniture Director Bradley stated installation was expected in March/April. b. Seaver Endowment Donation of $5,000 Director Bradley reported this grant is to go towards the purchase of popular fiction. m. — p. Calendars., Flyers, Historical Picture Chair Renfrew and Trustee HasBrouck both commented that it was nice to see the historic photo of Arcadia's 1967 Rose Parade float. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of November 16, 2017 Recommended action: Approve The motion was moved by Trustee Delphey, seconded by Trustee HasBrouck, and carried on a voice vote.
