Library Conference room.

REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS
Trustee Renfrew reported that the receipts from the Friends' October Book Sale were not strong.
The event needs to be publicized more.
Councilwoman Verlato reported on several development projects in Arcadia, including expanded
facilities at the race track and the new project at Santa Anita and Live Oak. She updated the
Board on the Citizens Financial Advisory Committee and its recommendation that the City seek
new sources of revenue, which the City Council approved. City is leaning towards increasing the
sales tax, which would need to be approved by voters.
REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Announcements/Statements/Reports
a. Director's Update: Director Bradley reported that the staff participated in the Great
Shakeout and EOC activation drill which followed; she also discussed how Library staff.
would respond in an emergency. She updated the Board on the recent power outage at
the Library: the building was powered by the new generator for an entire day. The Director
also reminded the Trustees that the Leadership Academy would be touring the Museum
and Library next week and that the next Library Board meeting would include a closed
session for her evaluation.
b. Monthly Statistical Report: September 2018: Director Bradley noted that holds were
up, while teen programming had dropped. She also mentioned that Passport Services
seemed to be on an upswing after a slow summer: Passport Services is still trying to
recoup the initial start-up costs. "Gifts and Grants" reflect the $40,000 given by the Friends
of the Library.
c. Monthly Report Narrative: September 2018: The Director reported that Arcadia Library
staff, including bilingual employees attended the Lunar Festival. It was well -attended and
worth the effort. Trustees complimented staff on the posters and book displays in Library,
as well as on the large number of questions Information Services staff handle. Director
Bradley informed the Board that the Library's Wi-Fi will be available only between 8 a.m.
swind 6 or 9 p.m. (depending on the day of the week) to discourage homeless from
congregating overnight outside the Library.
d. City's Financial Outlook: Director Bradley showed a PowerPoint presentation prepared
by the City and reviewed the City's financial issues and priorities. The Board of Trustees
discussed their concerns with the Director and with Councilwoman Verlato. They also
reviewed the Library's year-end budget report. The Library spent over 97% of its budget
allocation overall.
d. Strategic Plan: Director Bradley introduced the new Strategic Plan by noting that the
Library has been working off a three-year plan developed with a consultant after a
community needs assessment study in 2015. The proposed plan has three goals: to be
transformational; to emphasize advocacy and public awareness; and to emphasiz6
organizational excellence. Director Bradley discussed the need to redeploy staff and to
pursue self-service options in order to streamline operations, minimize costs.
The motion to adopt the Strategic Plan for 2018-2020 as presented by Staff was made b
Trustee HasBrouck, seconded by Trustee Carter, and carried on a voice vote. i

e. Holiday Breakfast: Director Bradley invited the Board of Trustees to the annual Holiday
Breakfast, scheduled for December 11, 2018, from 8 to 10 a.m. Guests are encouraged
to bring a fun gift of $20 or less for an exchange.
f. Staff: Principal Librarian Danielle Guerrero had her baby on Tuesday. Yvonne Ng is the
acting Principal Librarian. The Library is recruiting two aides, and Account Services has
added two new staff members, one full-time and one part-time.
g. it Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Rebecca Wilcox is leaving for a full-time position; her,
farewell party is on Tuesday from 1:30-3 p.m. They are expecting a three-month
recruitment. The Tongva exhibit has been expanded and updated. The recent Coffee Talk
on Lucky Baldwin was well attended; the Historical Society provided a pizza lunch.
Upcoming events: the Snow Festival Marionette show in December, and the Museum
anniversary this Saturday.
h.-m.Calendars, Flyers, Historical Photo: Director Bradley reported that the Coffee with a
Cop program was well attended. Halloween trick or treating and Thanksgiving week
activities for children were discussed. It was noted that the Arcadia High School Band had
also appeared at the Inauguration in 2005.
