REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
THURSDAY, APRIL 18'2019

CALL TO ORDER — Chair Elizabeth Renfrew called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. in the
Library Conference room.

and Alice Wang; Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley
(Secretary); Library Services Managers Roger Hiles and Pat Smith.
REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS
Chair Renfrew stated that she had represented the Board at the City Council reorganization
session on April 16. She also attended the presentation about the book on hospice care
sponsored by the Friends of the Library on April 16, which she noted was well -attended.
Trustee Carter stated that she had volunteered at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
She said that it was a very interesting event and recommended that the other trustees attend
the event next year.
REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Announcements/Statements/Reports
Community Update Information on Local Measure A: Director Bradley presented basic
City budget issues and outlined how Local Measure A would address them.
Director's Update: Director Bradley reported that she had presented the Library's budget
request to the City Manager, and that the, request for the year was flat, with the exception of
some contract services costs, which have gone up. She added that the requests for Capital
Improvement and Equipment Replacement, to be made on Friday, April 19, would include a
multi-year plan for replacing worn and damaged furniture in the Children's Library. Director
Bradley also stated that she would be presenting a wish list of items to the Arcadia Chinese
Association following the Board meeting, which would include a second early literacy (AWE)
computer workstation for the Children's Library. She also asked Manager Hiles to describe
the proposed Arcadia Student Success Initiative, which could allow AVSD sixth -graders to
checkout library items with their School District ID cards. He reported that discussions with
the District are progressing, though some technical issues remain. Finally, Director Bradley
announced that she had just received a check for $75 from Kathleen Vallee Stein, which
was a donation of half the proceeds from book sales at the hospice care program.
Monthly Statistical Report: March 2019: Chair Renfrew noted that passport sales were up
for the month. Trustee Delphey asked if this service is developing as planned, and Director
Bradley responded that we missed some of the busy season last year, as the service was
just beginning, but this year was doing well.
Monthly Report Narrative: March 2019: Chair Renfrew stated that it looked like the Library
had been busy again this month. She added that the Adult Recess program was really
keeping the participants interested. Trustee Carter reported that the drawings at the Silver
Circle had presented great prizes to the volunteers. Chair Renfrew added that the Silver
Circle event was a very nice evening. Trustee Delphey stated that the Anita Baldwin
program had been unusually good.
Financial Report: February 2019: Chair Renfrew noted that spending seemsto be on
course. Director Bradley added that the additional spending in the vehicle maintenance
account was for diesel fuel and broken parts for the building's generator, which doesn't have
a separate budget line.
Budget: Director Bradley asked if the Board had any additional questions about the
Library's budget requests, and they did not.
Staff Reports to Council: Director Bradley noted that the Friends were funding the
Classical Concerts again this year.
Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Director Bradley announced that Stevy Acevedo had
been selected as the new Museum Curator. She added that a conditional offer for a new
Museum Education Coordinator should go out next week. Director Bradley reported that the
Museum's Spring Soiree on April 6 had been a success, and that a second one was
scheduled for May 25.
Calendars, Flyers/Articles/Attachments: Director Bradley reported that the Arcadia
Chinese Association's Law Day program would be held on April 27. She added that public
artwork from the School District was currently up on display in the Children's Library.

Recommended action: Approve
The motion to approve the minutes was moved by Trustee HasBrouck, seconded by Trustee
Carter, and carried on a voice vote. Trustee Delphey abstained since she was not at the March
21 meeting.

ABSTAIN: Trustee Delphey
ADJOURNMENT
Chair Renfrew adjourned this meeting at 5:45 p.m. to Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. in
the Conference Room of the Library, 20 W. Duarte Road, Arcadia.
