RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Commissioner Fowler called the meeting to order at 6:00pm in the Recreation
Conference Room.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Randy Fowler, Joe Shivan, and Lyn Torn
EXCUSED: Raymond Cheung and Steve Swinney
A motion was made by Commissioner Tom, seconded by Commissioner Shivan and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to excuse Chairperson Cheung and Vice-Chairperson Swinney from this
meeting.

1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Fowler reported the tribute to Veterans and Military families held at Arcadia County Park
on Saturday, May 26, 2018 was very impressive.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member April Verlato reported at the June 5, 2018 City Council meeting, the Arcadia City
Council unanimously selected Council Member Sho Tay as Mayor of Arcadia for the upcoming year and
chose her as Mayor Pro Tern by a 5-0 vote. Mayor Pro Tern Verlato stated the City Council will adopt
the City's Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Operating Budget at the next City Council meeting on June 19, 2018
and encourages everyone to attend. Mayor Pro Tem Verlato announced she will continue to be the City
Council Liaison for the Recreation and Parks Commission.
2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of May 9, 2018
It was moved by Commissioner Tom, seconded by Commissioner Shivan and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 1.a.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
Deputy Public Works Services Director (DPWSD) Paul Cranmer reported the tennis court
resurfacing project will begin at Camino Grove Park on June 25 and Bicentennial Park on
July 9, 2019. DPWSD Cranmer stated Public Works Services will restripe the tennis courts at
Camino Grove Park at that time and will stripe for Pickleball Courts as well.
b. Report of Director of Recreation and Community Services
I. Department Monthly Report
Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright
reported on the Senior Services Division activities. 312 seniors gathered this month to
play bridge which provides friendly competition, socialization, and cognitive stimulation.
Classes which include aerobics, line dancing, strength training, yoga and zumba had
2,696 participants this month. "Coffee with the Mayor", where seniors have the
opportunity to listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues will continue in July with
Mayor Sho Tay. The Chinese game Mahjong continues to be very popular with 49
seniors participating. The Senior Nutrition Program provided 1,650 seniors a nutritious
meal Monday through Friday in May. The Taste the Town event continues to be very
popular with 32 seniors who enjoyed an Italian lunch at Alex Di Peppe's. 280 seniors
attended the Rotary Senior of the Year luncheon honoring Mary Hansen as the 2018
Senior of the Year. Recreation Staff accompanied 34 seniors to Los Angeles for the
AQMD Healthy Living and Clean Air Expo.
ADRCS Wright reported on the Recreation Services Division. Kid's Night Out had 49
children taking part in the "Fiesta Friday" themed evening at the Community Center. The
Annual Community Bike Ride had 267 participants riding their bikes on the seven mile
ride through the City. The Adult Basketball League held at the Dana Middle School Gym
will now be available for teams on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Merit Badge classes
held at Wilderness Park are offered to Scouts to earn badges that help them to reach
goals of being an Eagle Scout with 149 in attendance. Wilderness Park included 475
participants for overnight reservations. Concerts and Movies in the Park Series are both
held Thursday nights beginning on June 28. The Recreation and Community Services
Department is working with the Arcadia Performing Arts Center Foundation to purchase a
dance floor for the Concerts in the Park Series.
II. Financial Statements
ADRCS Wright referenced the April 2018 Financial Statement. Total expenditures
through April 2018 are $2,441,363 which is 73.7% of the budgeted amount for this fiscal
year. The total fiscal year revenue as of April 2018 is $1,057,835 which is 85.8% of the
budgeted amount. ADRCS Wright referenced the April 2018 Park & Recreation Facilities
Fund, with an account balance of$10,861,475.

Commissioner Fowler adjourned the meeting at 6:20pm to July 11, 2018 at 6:00pm in the Recreation
Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
