HomeMy WebLinkAboutRP Minutes: 08/08/2018 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, August 8, 2018 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Cheung called the meeting to order at 6:00pm in the Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Shivan ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Raymond Cheung, Randy Fowler, Joe Shivan, Lyn Tom EXCUSED: Steve Swinney A motion was made by Commissioner Fowler, seconded by Commissioner Tom and unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Commissioner Swinney from this meeting. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Commissioner Fowler made a motion to nominate Commissioner Swinney as Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Shivan. Commissioner Swinney was not present to accept the nomination. Commissioner Shivan made a motion to nominate Commissioner Fowler as Vice-Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Tom. Commissioner Fowler accepted the nomination and the motion carried unanimously. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Tom reported she was happy to attend Concerts and Movies in the Park this summer in Arcadia and said how well organized and attended the event was. Commissioner Cheung reported the Lego Specialty Camps for kids at Dana Gym was enjoyed by his children and happy it was in a nice air conditioned location. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of June 13, 2018 It was moved by Commissioner Tom, seconded by Commissioner Shivan and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 1.a. AYES: Fowler, Shivan, and Tom NOES: None ABSENT: Swinney ABSTAIN: Cheung 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report from Public Works Services Department Public Works Services Street Superintendent (PWSSS) Dave Thompson reported the Tennis Courts at Bicentennial Park and Camino Grove Park have been resurfaced. Camino Grove Park also has a Pickelball court. Hugo Reid and Tierra Verde Tennis Courts will be resurfaced as soon as bids are received. PWSSS Thompson reported Newcastle and Bicentennial Parks have new wood chips. b. Report of Director of Recreation and Community Services I. Department Monthly Report Director of Recreation and Community Services (DRCS) Sara Somogyi reported on the Senior Services Division: Coffee with the Mayor takes place the first Tuesday of the month at 9am and has approximately 25 seniors in attendance. Senior Services has staff available to answer questions and provide assistance on issues that concern older adults and their families. The Information and Referral Program is available for anyone who requests referral information about shelters, food, senior housing, senior Uber and more. The monthly Monday dance takes place the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month at 1:30pm and has an attendance of approximately 210 seniors per month. Arcadia Travelers Club is a non-profit organization that is held at the Community Center in Arcadia. The Travelers Club monthly meeting is held the fourth Friday of the month. Seminars are held each month in collaboration with Methodist Hospital. There were 26 seniors in attendance in July. Seniors attended the yearly beach trip to Doheny Beach on July 25. The annual event includes fun in the sun, lunch and games. DRCS Somogyi reported Concerts and Movies in the Park is coming to an end on August 9. The band Cash Up Front will be playing a tribute to Johnny Cash. It will also be Fire Department Night. DRCS Somogyi reported Ryan Wright accepted a Director's position with the City of Diamond Bar. DRCS Somogyi reported additional ADA improvements to the parking lot, including ADA required ramps and extra ADA parking spaces have been added to the Community Center parking lot. DRCS Somogyi reported the City of Arcadia, has been working with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Government to study, prevent, and combat homelessness in Arcadia. Arcadia just adopted a five (5) year Homelessness Plan. II. Financial Statements DRCS Somogyi referenced the June 2018 Financial Statement. Total expenditures through June are 3,076,248 which is 92.9% of the budgeted amount for this fiscal year. The total fiscal year revenue as of June 2018 is $1,190,850 which is 96.6% of the budgeted amount. DRCS Somogyi referenced the June 2018 Park & Recreation Facilities Fund, with an account balance of $11,026,957. ADJOURNMENT Vice-Chairperson Fowler adjourned the meeting at 6:42pm to September 12, 2018 in the Recreation Conference Room located - 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
