HomeMy WebLinkAboutRP Minutes: 03/13/2019 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, March 13, 2019 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Swinney called the meeting to order at 6:00pm in the Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Cheung ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Raymond Cheung, Joe Shivan, Steve Swinney, and Lyn Tom EXCUSED: Randy Fowler A motion was made by Commissioner Cheung, seconded by Commissioner Tom and unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Commissioner Fowler. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Tom reported she had a great time at the Opening Ceremony for Arcadia American Little League held on Saturday, February 23 at Hugo Reid Park. Council Member Tom Beck and Recreation Commissioner Cheung were also in attendance representing the City. Commissioner Cheung reported he also had a great time at the Opening Ceremony for Arcadia American Little League and was impressed with Commissioner Tom throwing the first pitch of the season. Commissioner Cheung was excited to announce he received the spring Buzz Brochure and has already signed his sons up for some day camps and specialty camps. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON — None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of February 13, 2019 It was moved by Commissioner Tom, seconded by Commissioner Cheung and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 1.a. AYES: Cheung, Shivan, Swinney, and Tom NOES: None ABSTAIN: Fowler 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report from Public Works Services Department Deputy Public Works Services Director (DPWSD) Paul Cranmer reported Phase Two of the landscaping on the front of the Community Center is underway. DPWSD Cranmer reported woodchips were recently layed on the playground area at Camino Grove Park. b. Report of Director of Recreation and Community Services I. Department Monthly Report Director of Recreation and Community Services Sara Somogyi (DRCS) reported on the Senior Services Division: On Wednesday's participants play bridge with a total of 183 seniors for the month. Over 3,500 seniors attended classes this last month held at the Community Center and the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center (MEC). On Thursdays and Fridays, Association for the Advancement of Retired People (AARP) Tax Aide Volunteers assisted 183 seniors in need of income tax filing assistance. In collaboration with Arcadia Chinese Association, 250 seniors celebrated Chinese New Year on Friday, February 8. A lecture on the Advances in Ophthalmology was held on Tuesday, February 26 by Dr. Elson Lai whom discussed the most common issues medical doctors see in the eyes with 145 seniors attending. DRCS Somogyi reported on the Recreation Services Division. Kid's Night Out was held on February 8 with 38 enrolled in the Valentine's themed evening. Wilderness Park Rentals were lower than usual mainly because of the rain and intermittent park closure. II. Financial Statements DRCS Somogyi referenced the January 2019 Financial Statement. Total expenditures through January 2019 are$1,757,208 which is 52.3% of the budgeted amount for this fiscal year. The total fiscal year revenue as of January 2019 is $853,989 which is 69.1% of the budgeted amount. DRCS Somogyi referenced the January 2019 Park & Recreation Facilities Fund, with an account balance of$11,387,683. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Swinney adjourned the meeting at 6:10pm to April 10, 2019 in the Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
