SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Miriam Carter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Miriam Carter, Glynna Harper, Joyce Platt, Steve Sherman, Ruth Stinson,
Estelle Sykes, Alice Tangney
ABSENT: Robert Liu
A motion was made by Commissioner Sherman, seconded by Commissioner Platt to excuse
Commissioner Liu from this meeting.
PUBLIC COMMENTS--None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Sherman reported the Men's Club is doing well. The Men's Club held their
holiday luncheon in December. Commissioner Sherman encourages anyone who likes to play
card games or bridge to join the Men's Club on Mondays. Ladies are welcome and a light lunch
is served at 11:30am every Monday.
Commissioner Harper reported the Friendship Club is doing well. The Senior Friendship Club
meets every Wednesday at 11 am. Commissioner Harper reported the club enjoys a regular
meeting, pie day, birthday celebrations, and Bingo. The Friendship Club annual dues are $5
per person.
Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers new officers were installed in December.
The Travelers office was closed for the holidays from December 21, 2015 through January 1,
2016. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers general meeting will be held on January 22
with guest speaker, Mayor Gary Kovacic. Commissioner Platt reported members will be
attending The Broad, Clifton's Cafeteria and Huell Howser's Basque Country in January. The
Travelers will also be touring the Edelwiss Chocolate Factory where the 1 Love Lucy show
filmed the popular classic candy episode. Commissioner Platt reported upcoming trips will
include a Mystery Trip with Curt Tucker and extended trips to Spain, Portugal and Eastern
Canada. There are currently 200 club members.
Commissioner Stinson reported she is happy to be back. Commissioner Stinson asked if the
City could have a safety assessment on Balboa Drive and Portola Drive in Arcadia. These two
streets intersect with Sunset Blvd. Commissioner Stinson reported the crosswalk signs on the
street have faded and cannot be seen by pedestrians. Commissioner Stinson asked if the City
would consider putting lighted crosswalks which will encourage pedestrians to use the
crosswalks instead of crossing in the middle of the road. Commissioner Stinson suggested
having lighted crosswalks would give pedestrians enough time to cross and avoid accidents. It
will also have a positive effect on the speed of traffic.
Commissioner Sykes reported the Golden Age Club is doing well and held their installation of
new Officers in December. Ann larossi-Armenio is the new President of the Golden Age Club.
The club held a nice catered Christmas luncheon including a gift exchange and sang Christmas
carols at the December meeting. The Golden Age Club is celebrating their 60th Anniversary on
January 28. Special guests including Mayor Kovacic will be attending, as well as past Club
Presidents.
Commissioner Tangney reported the Assistance League held their Christmas Luncheon in
December, with good entertainment. Commissioner Tangney reported she attends the Bargain
Box meetings twice per month. Commissioner Tangney is also a member of the Arcadia
Woman's Club. The Arcadia Woman's Club is a place to meet new people, form friendships
and work on projects that will help benefit the community. Each month women from the San
Gabriel Valley community meet at the Historical Club to socialize and plan events to help the
community.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Tom Beck reported the City Council general election will take place in April.
There are currently six candidates registered to run for two available seats on the Arcadia City
Council. Council Member Beck advised everyone to vote. Council Member Beck said every
person who votes should know what the person they are voting for stands for because it is
important to vote for the person who mirrors your opinion. Council Member Beck reminded
everyone to watch City Council meetings online at any time. Council Member Beck said the
City of Arcadia has many historical buildings throughout the City, such as The Woman's Club,
the Windmill building, The Derby, and many more. Council Member Beck said he feels very
passionate about historical preservation. Council Member Beck said he does not want to see
any historical buildings torn down.

a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of December 3, 2015.
It was moved by Commissioner Platt seconded by Commissioner Sherman and carried on roll call
vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a.
AYES: Commissioners Carter, Harper, Platt, Sherman, Sykes and Tangney
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioner Liu
ABSTAIN: Commissioner Stinson
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
I. Report on Activities held in December 2015
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung reported Monday Dance was held one time in
December 2015. A total of 50 seniors were in attendance. RS Cheung reported the Community
Center would like to increase the attendance and asked Commissioners to spread the word at
their clubs and inform their members about the Monday Dance held every first, third and fifth
Monday of the month. RS Cheung reported the Senior Holiday Brunch was held on December
4. Bunco was held on December 11 which included food and refreshments. Great prizes were
given for most BUNCOS, most baby BUNCOS, most losses, and most wins.
II. Upcoming Activities for January 2016
RS Cheung reported Coffee with the Mayor will be held on Friday, January 8. The Bingo and
Lunch event will be held on January 15. A seminar regarding understanding the difference
between HMOs and Medigaps will be held on Monday, January 25. RS Cheung reported
income tax appointments will be available on Thursdays and Fridays. Reservations are on a
first-come, first-served basis. Beginning February 4, IRS Certified AARP volunteer tax aides will
prepare 2015 income taxes for people 55 years of age and older. RS Cheung reported the
Arcadia Chinese Association will host the Chinese New Year Luncheon at the Community
Center on Friday, February 12. RS Cheung informed Commissioners the 2016 Senior of The
Year nominations are due to the Community Center by Friday, February 26. RS Cheung
reported the Rotary Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10. RS Cheung informed
Commissioners the Senior of the Year names from 1969 to the present year will be displayed on
the display board located in the lobby of the Community Center. RS Cheung followed up
regarding the Connection Monthly Newsletter with a new section advertising card games,
cribbage, puzzles and dominos available at the Community Center.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director.
Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright reported the
Parks Master Plan and LA County's Needs Assessment Public Workshop will be held on
Wednesday, January 20 at 6pm in the Police Department's Community Room. There is also an
online survey and comments can also be provided to the Recreation and Community Service
Department. ADRCS Wright reported the Gold Line Celebration will be held on Saturday,
March 5 at the Train Depot. The first train from the Gold Line is scheduled to come through
Arcadia. More information regarding the time will be provided as soon as it is confirmed with
Metro.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Carter adjourned the meeting at 5:10pm to February 4, 2.016, at 4:00pm in the
Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
