HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 03/03/2016 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, March 3, 2016 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Miriam Carter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Recreation Supervisor Candice Cheung ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Miriam Carter, Glynna Harper, Robert Liu, Joyce Platt, Steve Sherman, Ruth Stinson, Alice Tangney ABSENT: None PUBLIC COMMENTS — None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Tangney reported she attends the Bargain Box meetings twice per month. The Bargain Box is a one-stop shop staffed by volunteers of the Assistance League. Commissioner Tangney is also a member of the Woman's Club of Arcadia. The Woman's Club of Arcadia is a wonderful place to meet people and form new friendships. Each month women meet at the historical club house to socialize and plan events to help the community. Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers have been working on their bylaws, rules and regulations to provide framework for its operation and management. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers will hold a budget meeting to discuss how long they can stay in business. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers Club liability insurance has been updated. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers Club will be looking into purchasing a computer to print their monthly boarding passes. There are four trips per month. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers club members attended the Vandenberg Air Force Base trip in February. A three day Vegas trip and the USS Midway and San Diego trips are both scheduled in May. A trip to Lotusland and Ronald Reagan Ranch Museum is scheduled in June. Commissioner Harper reported the Friendship Club is doing well and a total of 51 members were in attendance at their last meeting. The Senior Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11 am. Commissioner Harper reported the club enjoys a regular meeting, pie day, birthday celebrations, and bingo. The Friendship Club's annual dues are $5 per person. Commissioner Stinson reported she is happy to be back. Commissioner Stinson reported she attended the Candidates Forum in February. Commissioner Stinson said it is important for the community to get to know the candidates. Commissioner Sherman reported the Men's Club is doing well. Commissioner Sherman encourages anyone who likes to play card games or bridge to join the Men's Club on Mondays. Ladies are welcome and a light lunch is served at 11:30am every Monday. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON — None 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of January 7, 2016. It was moved by Commissioner Sherman seconded by Commissioner Stinson and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Harper, Platt, Sherman, Stinson and Tangney NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: Commissioner Liu 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Senior of the Year Selection The Commissioners discussed nominations for Senior of the Year. Each commissioner voted and Carol Libby was selected. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung announced the honoree and her family members will be invited to the Rotary Luncheon on Tuesday, May 10 in Carol's honor at the Community Center. b. Report of Recreation Supervisor I. Report on Activities held in January and February 2016 RS Cheung reported the Bingo and Lunch event on January 5 was a success with a total of 108 seniors in attendance. Bingo is held twice per year. RS Cheung reported the Monday Dance attendance is up to 92 people. RS Cheung asked Commissioners to continue promoting the Monday Dance at their monthly meetings and clubs. RS Cheung reported 300 people attended Chinese New Year Luncheon event on February 12. The Arcadia Chinese Association did a great job with the event. There was plenty of food and great entertainment. RS Cheung reported a total of 246 seniors had their taxes filed in February. Income tax service will continue through April 8. II. Upcoming Activities for March 2016 RS Cheung reported Senior Services will be celebrating birthdays once per month starting in March during the senior lunch program. Seniors will sing happy birthday and enjoy a piece of birthday cake. RS Cheung reminded Commissioners she will be happy to reserve tickets for anyone interested in attending any senior services events. RS Cheung reported Coffee with the Mayor will be held on Friday, March 4. Monday Dance will be held on Mondays, March 7 and 21 and Bunco will be held on Friday, March 18. c. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi introduced Office Assistant, Karen Collins. Karen will serve as the liaison for the Youth Advisory Council. RCSD Somogyi said middle school and high school students will be involved ranging from ages 12-17. There are many students interested in becoming involved in the Youth Advisory Council and interested in getting involved with the City. Applications are currently being reviewed. Youth Advisory Council will meet quarterly on a trial basis for a period of two years. The first Youth Advisory Council meeting will take place in July with seven members. RCSD reported the Gold Line celebration will take place on Saturday, March 5. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, live music, community booths, food vendors and much more. RCSD Somogyi reported the Arcadia Mayor's Community Breakfast will be held on Friday, April 1 at the Frontrunner Restaurant at Santa Anita Park. Reservations are required by March 25. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Carter adjourned the meeting at 4:55pm to April 7, 2016, at 4:00pm in the Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
