HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 10/06/2016 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, October 6, 2016 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Carter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Sherman ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Miriam Carter, John Dickey, Glynna Harper, Joyce Platt, Steve Sherman, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: Patsy Harbicht and Anthony Leung A motion was made by Commissioner Platt and seconded by Commissioner Slemaker to excuse Commissioners Harbicht and Leung. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Sherman reported the Men's Club is doing well with approximately 17 members and encourages anyone who likes to play card games or bridge to join the Men's Club. A special holiday luncheon will be held in December. Ladies are welcome and a light lunch is served at 11:30am every Monday at the Assistance League. Commissioner Harper reported the Friendship Club is doing well. She is happy to report new members will be joining soon. Commissioner Harper reported there will be a Halloween costume contest on October 26 and a Thanksgiving luncheon in November. The Senior Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11 am. The club has pie day, birthday celebrations. special theme days, guest speakers, and Bingo. Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well and had 30 people in attendance at their October meeting. Commissioner Slemaker reported they had birthday celebrations on October 6 and a Halloween party on October 27. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at the Assistance League and their annual dues are $5. The club has pie day, birthday celebrations, special theme days, and Bingo. Commissioner Platt is happy to report the Arcadia Travelers Club is doing well and currently has 470 members and their goal is to have 550 members by the end of the year. Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers has a new computer program. John Hopkins, a computer specialist met with the Travelers Computer Committee and suggested a program that will fit their needs. Mr. Hopkins has worked over 350 hours free of charge to put a new program together and it is almost complete. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers attended a fun trip on October 5, everyone enjoyed the Backroads of California, Santa Ynes Historical Museum and Fess Parker's winery for a little shopping and wine tasting. Commissioner Platt reported the club will have trips to Living Desert Zoo and Windmills on November 10 and Historic Homes Tour in Orange County on November 16. Some of their upcoming extended trips are; Shades of Ireland on April 3, 2017 and New York City on October 5, 2017. Commissioner Platt said the Travelers 2017 memberships are on sale now. The cost and information on trips are available by visiting the Travelers Office at the Community Center, Monday through Friday, from 9am to 12:30pm. Travelers Club new officers will be installed in December 2016. Commissioner Dickey reported he enjoys meeting new people and being involved with the Community. Commissioner Dickey reported he delivered the Arcadia Transit Dial-A-Ride information to assisted living facilities. Commissioner Dickey has lived in Arcadia for 22 years, owns a health insurance firm company, specializes in accounting, and holds a law degree specializing in tax. Commissioner Dickey and his daughter enjoy volunteering at the Pasadena Humane Society. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Tom Beck reported the City of Arcadia was announced as an Eddy Awards finalist for most Business-Friendly City by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). This is the first time the City has been selected as a finalist for this award. The winners of the 2016 Eddy Awards will be announced on Thursday, November 10, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. If the City wins the award, Mayor Beck will provide a speech on behalf of The City of Arcadia and will present a video. Mayor Beck is happy to resume Coffee with the Mayor. Every month seniors get a chance to hear the Mayor's ideas on timely topics and ask questions about issues of personal interest. The next meeting will be held at the Community Center on Tuesday, November 1 at 8:30am. Mayor Beck reported the Taste of Arcadia 2016 was held on Monday, September 26 at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Taste of Arcadia and Business Showcase attendees enjoyed many different foods and tastes from 45 local restaurants, caterers, wine, and beer vendors. Mayor Beck reported a public meeting will be held at the Arcadia Public Library on October 13 at 6pm. At this meeting, the City's Planning Division and the City's consultant, Architectural Resources Group will present the findings of the Citywide Historic Resource Survey. The City of Arcadia has many historical buildings including residential and commercial buildings. Mayor Beck is very passionate about historic preservation and feels the City should preserve and protect its historic buildings. Mayor Beck would like to have a Historic Preservation Commission and encourages everyone to attend the City Council meeting on historic preservation. Mayor Beck reported the Arcadia Museum Foundation's Annual Fundraiser Dinner will be held on Sunday, October 16 at 5pm. The event will be held at the Arcadia Community Center. The unveiling of the lifelike Lucky Baldwin figure and a special tribute to Floretta Lauber will be presented. Mayor Beck reported a public hearing on the City's Development Code will be held on October 18. Mayor Beck reported the Pasadena Humane Society will bring an adoptable dog to City Council meetings in order to promote dog adoptions. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of September 1, 2016. It was moved by Commissioner Sherman and seconded by Commissioner Slemaker and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Harper, Platt, Sherman and Slemaker NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioners Harbicht and Leung ABSTAIN: Commissioner Dickey 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor I. Report on Activities held in September 2016 Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung gave an update on September highlights. Seniors attended the Hollywood Bowl on September 8 where everyone received a boxed dinner and a memorable show featuring the LA Philharmonic. The Head to Toe Health Fair was held on September 9. This is an annual health fair in partnership with Methodist Hospital. Staff and participants also celebrated the Arcadia Community Center's 25th anniversary. On September 16, Arcadia Gardens retirement home hosted their quarterly cooking demonstration. Seniors received healthy cooking tips and techniques. The Fabulous 50's Event was held on September 23. There were 135 participants who enjoyed a 50's day themed photo booth, dinner, dancing, raffle prizes, and live entertainment. II. Report on Activities held in October 2016 RS Cheung reported the October Bunco is sold out. Council Member Sho Tay and 30 seniors will Taste the Town of Arcadia and explore local restaurants and enjoy a pre-selected lunch menu each month. On Wednesday, October 19, they will visit Garden Café. Flu shots will be held on October 28 at the Community Center. The Veterans recognition luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 10. Commissioners are invited and encouraged to attend this event. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi welcomed Commissioner Dickey to the meeting. RCSD Somogyi reported the Youth Advisory Council will have their first meeting on October 12 at 4pm. RCSD Somogyi said middle school and high school students will be involved and will meet quarterly. RCSD reported the Fall Leadership Academy began in September. The Leadership Academy is a free program for Arcadia residents interested in becoming better acquainted with the City's operations and processes. Participants meet for nine Wednesday evening sessions and each class features a presentation with City staff. On October 26, RCSD Somogyi and staff will present the Recreation and Community Services Department. RCSD reported the LaJaJa Kids Fest, Family Expo, and Bike Ride will be held at the Arcadia Community Center on October 9. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Carter adjourned the meeting at 5:10pm to November 3, 2016 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
