HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 03/02/2017 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, March 2, 2017 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Carter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Recreation Coordinator, Ashley Marston ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Miriam Carter, John Dickey, Patsy Harbicht, Anthony Leung, Joyce Platt, Steve Sherman, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: Glynna Harper A motion was made by Commissioner Platt, seconded by Commissioner Dickey and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Harper. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Chairperson Carter reported the drinking fountain stations in the Community Center have very low water pressure. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi said she would ask the Public Works Services Department to look into this matter. Chairperson Carter asked if Dial-A-Ride has made any progress. Mayor Tom Beck reported the City is aware and working to remedy the challenges it has with fixed routes and Dial-A-Ride services. Mayor Beck reported they have added additional buses and seniors will continue to receive door to door service. Commissioner Sherman reported the Men's Club is doing well. Commissioner Sherman said a few members of the club have moved to senior retirement homes and no longer will be able to attend club meetings. Commissioner Sherman encourages new members to stop by and play card games or bridge. The Men's Club meets on Mondays and ladies are also welcome. A light lunch is served at 11:30am. Commissioner Dickey encouraged everyone to stop by Eisenhower Park on Saturday, March 4 for the Bark for Life event. Bark for Life is a walk for dogs and their owners to raise funds for the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer. Commissioner Leung reported seniors are still inquiring about the price increase in classes. RCSD Somogyi responded the Community Center has hired new instructors. The fee for each class is determined based on comparable cities near Arcadia, the instructors, and the type of class. RCSD Somogyi also stated instructors are contracted by the City, they are not City employees. The City receives 30% and instructors receive 70% of the class revenue. RCSD Somogyi informed everyone there are times a new instructor is needed to fill a class that has already been advertised in order to keep classes available. Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers Club will celebrate 35 years in September. An anniversary celebration will be held on September 29. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers enjoyed the Taste of LA tour on February 28 where they had a taste of Chinese and Filipino food, then lunch at the Smoke House, and dessert at the original Bob's Big Boy. Commissioner Platt reported on upcoming trips. The Orient Express Mystery tour will take place on May 2, a Gondola Getaway trip will take place on May 8, the Fillmore Railroad trip on May 17, and Menopause the Musical on May 27. Commissioner Platt reported a special event, A Day of Memory, Santa Anita Assembly Center 75 Years will be held at the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage on March 25 at 10am. The museum will mark the anniversary of the encampment of Japanese Americans during WWII with a program, lecture, and reception. Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. Club members will celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Thursday, March 16. Commissioner Slemaker reported the club has new members and a total of 26 people attended the last meeting. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11am and annual dues are $10. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Tom Beck reported the Annual State of the City Address will be held on March 2 at the Embassy Suites. Mayor Beck said he will talk about City partners in town, Santa Anita Park, Methodist Hospital, Arcadia Unified School District, and more. Mayor Beck reported City Council voted 4-1 with Mayor Beck voting against the proposal to trap and euthanize coyotes in the City. Mayor Beck said he has received over 700 emails from concerned people regarding this matter. Mayor Beck reported City Council voted to deny Verizon Wireless' proposed wireless tower facility in a residential area. Mayor Beck reported on a few commercial developments taking place. A 38- unit apartment building above 16,000 square feet of commercial retail space will be built at 57 Wheeler (at First Avenue, adjacent to 24 Hour Fitness). The project at Duarte Road and First Avenue will include more than 19,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and two upper levels with 37 condominiums. It will include a restaurant, bakery, and a market. Mayor Beck reported the Worley Parsons building at 125 Huntington Drive will be reconverted to a 76 room boutique hotel with an annex hotel tower with 74 rooms. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of February 2, 2017. It was moved by Commissioner Sherman, seconded by Commissioner Dickey and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Dickey, Harbicht, Leung, Platt, Sherman, and Slemaker NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Harper ABSTAIN: None 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Senior of the Year Senior Citizen Commissioners discussed nominations for the 2017 Senior of the Year. Each Commissioner voted and Joyce Platt was selected. RCSD Somogyi announced the honoree and her family members will be invited to the Rotary Luncheon on Tuesday, May 9 in Mrs. Platt's honor. The event will take place at the Arcadia Community Center at 11:30am. RCSD Somogyi reported that on May 31, Senior of the Year, Joyce Platt along with staff and family members will be invited to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the Los Angeles County Senior of the Year Luncheon. b. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in February 2017 Recreation Coordinator (RC) Ashley Marston gave an update on February program highlights. RC Marston reported the Community Center has two attorneys who provide free services at the Community Center. Attorney Carlos Arcos is available the last Monday of each month for phone appointments and questions regarding Medi-Cal, trust planning, and probate. Attorney Sara Polinsky is available in person the first Monday of each month. Each appointment is limited to 20 minutes per topic and may include living trusts, probate, financial power of attorney, advance healthcare directives, property transfers, and Medi-Cal long term care benefits. RC Marston reported a total of 174 appointments have been made for the free income tax service provided by IRS Certified AARP Volunteers. Appointments will be available through April 7. The Valentine's Day Bunco event took place on February 17 with 48 participants. II. Report on Upcoming Activities for March 2017 RC Marston reported the free Senior Expo will take place on March 10 from 10am to 12:30pm. There will be local organizations specializing in various senior related fields such as housing, insurance, and healthcare. The Arcadia Police Department, Arcadia Fire Department, Public Works Services Department, Arcadia Library, The Gilb Museum Department, and LA Metro will also be available to provide information and answer questions. RC Marston reported the St. Patrick's Day Luncheon is sold out with 160 people registered. This event will take place on Friday, March 17 and will include entertainment and raffle prizes. c. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RCSD Somogyi reminded everyone the "626 Golden Streets" will take place on Sunday, March 5, rain or shine. The event highlights the one year anniversary of the Foothill Gold Line Extension with an 18+ mile route. There will be art, music, food and entertainment.
