HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 05/04/2017 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 4, 2017 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Carter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chairperson Carter ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Miriam Carter, John Dickey, Glynna Harper, Anthony Leung, Joyce Platt, Steve Sherman, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: Patsy Harbicht A motion was made by Commissioner Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Sherman and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Harbicht. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Harper reported the Friendship Club is doing well. The Club held their regular meetings and pie days in April, as well as a special Easter Bonnet contest. Commissioner Harper reported the Friendship Club will celebrate Mother's Day on May 10. Commissioner Harper expressed her concerns on the Arcadia Transit Dial-A-Ride changes effective May 1, 2017. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright informed everyone Arcadia Dial-A-Ride will only provide service to Arcadia residents. Residents outside of the City boundaries will no longer be eligible for Dial-A-Ride service. ADRCS Wright said there is a transit task force working to provide information to City Council. Chairperson Carter asked if the Transportation Services Manager, Linda Hui would attend a Senior Commission meeting in order to provide more information about Arcadia Dial-A-Ride. ADRCS Wright said he would pass the message along to her. Commissioner Sherman reported there are currently 16 members attending the Men's Club each week. Commissioner Sherman encourages new members to stop by and play card games or bridge. The Club will be closed Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. Commissioner Sherman reported a special luncheon will be held in June. The Men's Club meets on Mondays at the Assistance League and ladies are also welcome. A light lunch is served at 11:30am. Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. The Club celebrated Easter and spring on April 20 with a special lunch. Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club has many new people attending. A total of 32 people attended the last meeting. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11am and annual dues are $10. Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers Club nominating Committee met and selected nominees for the 2018 officers. Commissioner Platt said the nominees will be presented at the Arcadia Travelers meeting in May and voting will take place in June. Commissioner Platt reported Ranger Kim Bosell will be the guest speaker on May 26. Ranger Kim Bosell will talk about the bears of the San Gabriel Mountains. Commissioner Platt reported on upcoming trips: An afternoon with Fritz Coleman on May 6, Gondola Getaway on May 8, Fillmore Railroad Lunch Train on May 17, Menopause the Musical on May 27. Commissioner Platt reported two additional trips to the Amazon Distribution Center are sold out. Travelers will also be able to enjoy an overnight trip to Dana Point and Laguna Beach on August 8 and 9. The last trip in August will take place on August 19 to Lake Arrowhead. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON None 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of April 6, 2017. It was moved by Commissioner Sherman, seconded by Commissioner Slemaker and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Harper, Leung, Platt, Sherman, and Slemaker NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Harbicht ABSTAIN: Commissioner Dickey 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in April 2017 Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung gave an update on activities held in April. Mahjong meets the first, second and fourth Friday of the month. The Matter of Balance class began in April. It will meet every Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30pm for eight weeks. This class will teach how to control falls, stay safe, and get active. RS Cheung reported a total of 119 seniors had their taxes prepared in April by AARP Tax Aide volunteers. Over 600 people had their taxes prepared during tax season at the Community Center. II. Report on Upcoming Activities for May 2017 RS Cheung invited the Senior Citizen Commissioners to the Rotary Salute to Seniors Luncheon on May 9, and Evening of Music Denim & Diamonds event on June 16. Registration for the Doheny Beach Trip will take place on Tuesday, May 30. There will only be one trip this year, serving the same amount of participants. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Wright reported the Community Bike Ride will take place on Saturday, May 6. The Annual Pancake Breakfast will take place on May 6 at Fire Station 106 from 7am to 12pm. ADRCS Wright reported the new Mayor is Peter Amundson and Mayor Pro Tem is Sho Tay. The new liaison for the Senior Citizens Commission Board will be determined soon. ADRCS Wright reported the City of Arcadia placed 25th on the website GoodCall.com as being one of the best cities for seniors to retire. The GoodCall.com website is for consumers to access data and tools to help make important decisions. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Carter adjourned the meeting at 4:40pm to June 1, 2017 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
