SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan
Wright called the meeting to order at 4:05pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: William Gleason, Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Anthony Leung, Joyce
Platt, Angie Slemaker
EXCUSED: Ralph Martinez, John Dickey
A motion was made by Commissioner Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Platt to excuse
Commissioners Dickey and Martinez from this meeting.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Commissioner Slemaker made a motion to nominate Commissioner Platt as Chairperson,
seconded by Commissioner Gleason. Commissioner Platt accepted the nomination and the
motion carried unanimously. Commissioner Gleason made a motion to nominate Commissioner
Slemaker as Vice Chairperson seconded by Commissioner Harbicht. Commissioner Slemaker
accepted the nomination and the motion carried unanimously.

PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Chairperson Platt suggested everyone go around the table and introduce themselves.
Commissioner Gleason reported he is a retired financial consultant. Commissioner Gleason
represents the Men's Club and has lived in Arcadia since 1960.
Commissioner Harbicht reported she represents the Assistance League and has been on the
Senior Citizens Commission for one year.
Commissioner Harper reported she represents the Friendship Club. Club members meet every
Wednesday at the Assistance League. Commissioner Harper said she is happy to report
attendance is doing well and new members are joining.
Commissioner Leung reported he retired from Boeing over a year ago and has been on the
Senior Citizens Commission for one year.
Commissioner Slemaker reported she represents the Golden Age Club. Commissioner
Slemaker is happy to report the Golden Age Club is doing well. The Golden Age Club meets
every Thursday at the Assistance League and their annual dues are $5. The club has pie day,
birthday celebrations, special theme days, and bingo. The club's current president is Ann
larossi-Armenio.
Chairperson Platt reported she represents the Arcadia Travelers Club. The club members meet
the fourth Friday of each month. Arcadia Travelers take trips every month. The Travelers office
is located in the Community Center and advertise their monthly trips in the Connection monthly
newsletter. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club will be celebrating their 35th
Anniversary on September 29 at 10am at the Community Center. Tickets are available in the
Arcadia Travelers Office for $13 per person. Chairperson Platt reported trips are going well and
the following trips will take place: Dana Point and Laguna Beach on August 8 and 9, Lake
Arrowhead on August 19, LA Zoo Light on November 18. Chairperson Platt reported gift cards
for friends and family can also be purchased in the Travelers Office.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Tom Beck reported the City received a letter from Attorneys Shenkman &
Hughes in June 2017. The letter asserts the voting system is not in compliance with the
California Voting Rights Act. The letter states the City should transition from at-large to district
based City Council elections. Council Member Beck reported Arcadia City Council has taken
action to consider transitioning to a district-based voting system to select its City Council
Members, replacing its current at-large election system. Council Member Beck reported the
Arcadia City Council will conduct a public hearing for the proposal to establish district
boundaries for district-based elections. Council Member Beck reported a Veterans Memorial will
be located outside the Arcadia Community Center.

a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of June 1, 2017.
It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker, seconded by Chairperson Platt and carried on roll
call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a.
AYES: Commissioners Leung, Platt, and Slemaker
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioners Martinez, Dickey
ABSTAIN: Commissioners Gleason, Harbicht and Harper
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Report on Activities held in July 2017
Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright gave an
update on events held in July. ADRCS Wright reported there are currently 18 participants
attending the Knit and Chat group every Friday. A notary service is available every Tuesday
from 10am to noon. ADRCS Wright reported Walk and Talk is a free program that gives seniors
an opportunity to socialize and exercise before the lunch program. Walk and Talk meets every
Thursday at the Community Center and is 30 minutes. The Doheny Beach yearly trip took place
on July 25. The trip was sold out with 108 participants who enjoyed a beautiful day in Dana
Point.
II. Report on Upcoming Activities for August 2017
ADRCS Wright reported on activities and events coming up in August. The annual luau will be
held on Friday, August 4 and bunco on August 18. Senior classes are doing well and numbers
continue to increase. The Hollywood Bowl trip is coming up on September 14 from 6-11 pm.
The cost is $15 per person. Participants can register online or at the Recreation Office. Senior
cultural day camp will be held on October 12 from 8:30am - 4 p.m. Registration begins August
29 for only $25 per person.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
ADRCS Wright reported National Night Out will be held at City Hall West Lawn on Thursday,
August 3 at 6:30pm, the City will also celebrate its 114th birthday. ADRCS Wright reported the
Arcadia Recreation and Parks Master Plan was adopted by the City Council. ADRCS Wright
reported the annual health event will take place at the Community Center on Friday, September
8. There will be information booths, free memory screening, raffle prizes, and more. The fall
craft fair will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 9am - 2pm. There will be handmade,
Halloween and Christmas items available. ADRCS Wright reported the Veterans Day
Recognition Luncheon will be held on Friday, November 3 at 11:30am. Registration begins
September 26. Veterans will receive a complimentary lunch.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 5:00pm to September 7, 2017 at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
