HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 10/05/2017 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, October 5, 2017 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Harbicht ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: John Dickey, Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: William Gleason A motion was made by Commissioner Slemaker, seconded by Harbicht and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Gleason. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. Club members will celebrate birthdays on October 5 and a Halloween luncheon and costume contest will be held on October 26. Commissioner Slemaker reported The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11am. Commissioner Dickey reported he has been busy educating seniors on Medicare. Commissioner Dickey mentioned Cooking with Chef Rojas will be held at Arcadia Gardens on October 20 and a Healthy Holiday Cooking class with Registered Dietician, Pacheco will be held at the Community Center on October 24. The information on the seminar and cooking class is available online or in the Connection. Commissioner Leung reported seniors are inquiring about the lunch menu. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi informed Commissioner Leung the City has a five year contract with Unified Nutrimeal. Unified Nutrimeal provides wholesome meals for seniors with a variety of lunch options each week. Unified Nutrimeal must also follow the Los Angeles County health guidelines, which includes fresh ingredients and reduced sodium. The City's lunch program is partially funded by The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The Community Center sells up to 90 meals per day. Commissioner Harper reported the Senior Friendship Club is doing well. Commissioner Harper reported there will be a Halloween costume contest on October 25 and a Thanksgiving luncheon in November. The Senior Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11 am. The club has pie day, birthday celebrations, special theme days, guest speakers, and Bingo. Commissioner Martinez reported he will presenting on "Ideas for Healthy Living" on Thursday, October 19. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club celebrated their 35th Anniversary on Friday, September 29 with 170 attendees. Guests enjoyed a nice lunch and entertainment. Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming trips: A three day trip to Hearst Castle will be held from December 10 through December 12. On January 19, Travelers will enjoy a day in Solvang, there will be a guided tour of a farm, sightseeing, and shopping. On January 28, Travelers will enjoy the day in San Diego. The trip includes a guided tour of the Oasis Camel Dairy and lunch at Lake Cuyamaca Restaurant. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Chairperson Platt reported on behalf of City Council Member Tom Beck. The Arcadia City Council is considering transitioning to a district-based voting system to select its City Council Members, replacing its current at-large election system. Over 55 cities have changed their at-large systems to district based. The process of conversion consists of: two public hearings; the drawing of draft maps; two additional public hearings; and finally, adoption of an ordinance selecting a district map and establishing the process by which staggered district elections will be implemented. Each district would elect one Council Member to a four year term. The maps proposed to make up the different council districts are available on the City's website. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of August 3, 2017. It was moved by Commissioner Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Harper and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Dickey, Harbicht, Harper, Leung, Platt, Slemaker NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Gleason ABSTAIN: Commissioner Martinez 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in September 2017 RCSD Somogyi reported there are currently 2,213 participants registered for the fall session. On September 5, there were 27 seniors at Coffee with the Mayor. The senior nutrition program provides meals Monday through Friday, with 1,785 meals sold in September. Walk and Talk is held every Thursday where participants meet at the Community Center and walk for approximately 30 minutes prior to lunch. There are approximately 53 participants who walk each month. RCSD reported the annual Health Fair was held on September 8 at the Community Center with 305 seniors in attendance. Seniors were able to receive free health screenings, attend a free educational lecture, and a chance to win free giveaways. II. Report on upcoming Activities for October 2017 RCSD Somogyi gave an update on events coming up in October. Coffee with the Mayor will be held on October 3 at 8:30am. This monthly event gives seniors a chance to ask the Mayor questions about personal interest and ideas. Coffee with a Cop will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on October 9 at 8am. Senior Cultural Day Camp will be held on October 12 at Wilderness Park from 8:30am to 4pm, this event sold out in one day. The annual Fall Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 9am to 2pm, and will be held in the Community Center. Tickets for the Senior Holiday Brunch will go on sale on October 24 and the event will be held on December 1. Timeless Melodies, "Music of World War II" will be held on November 7, tickets are on sale now. The annual Thanksgiving Feast event will be held on November 21, this event is sold out. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RCSD Somogyi reported the Leadership Academy took place on Wednesday, September 27 at the Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department. Participants started the night off with a tour of the community center. Everyone enjoyed a short lesson in the Tai-Chi class and ended the night learning to make pineapple upside down cake. Participants also learned about the programs, events, and the Recreation and Parks Master Plan. RCSD Somogyi reported on Wednesday, October 18, Congresswoman Judy Chu will recognize the City of Arcadia Senior Meals Program with a Congressional Recognition of Excellence Award. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 5pm to November 2, 2017 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
