HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 12/07/2017 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, December 7, 2017 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Martinez ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: William Gleason, Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: John Dickey A motion was made by Commissioner Harper, seconded by Slemaker and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Dickey. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. Club members celebrated Ann and Tony Armenia's birthdays this month. The Club will have their holiday party at the Embassy Suites on December 20. Commissioner Slemaker reported The Golden Age Club meets Thursday's at 11am. Commissioner Harper reported the Senior Friendship Club is doing well. Commissioner Harper reported the Club's attendance is approximately 40 people each week. The Club will celebrate birthdays on December 6 and their yearly Christmas luncheon will be held at the Embassy Suites in Arcadia on December 20. Commissioner Martinez reported he presented on "Ideas for Healthy Living" on October 19 at 1:30pm. Commissioner Martinez provided information on "Uber Middleman," a company seniors may call from a home phone to schedule a pick up. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung said she will look into adding the information to the referral cabinet at the Community Center. Commissioner Harbicht reported the Assistance League had a fun and successful holiday sale. A holiday party will be held at San Gabriel Country Club. Commissioner Gleason reported the Men's Club has approximately 20 members each week. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. Club members meet Wednesday's at 11am. Commissioner Leung asked if the City would advertise Lawn Bowling in the Connection brochure. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright informed Commissioner Leung the City offers advertising space in the Summer BUZZ brochure to Los Angeles County. Commissioner Leung will provide the information to ADRCS Wright. Chairperson Platt reported Community Services Officer, Mike Vercillo was the guest speaker at the Travelers meeting on November 17. Officer Vercillo spoked about staying safe during the holidays. Chairperson Platt reported the new officers for 2018 will be installed on Friday, December 15 and the Club will have their holiday luncheon at Clearman's Northwood Inn following the general meeting. Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming January trips: Travelers will enjoy a day in Solvang, there will be a guided tour of a farm, sightseeing, and shopping. On January 28, Travelers will enjoy the day in San Diego. The trip includes a guided tour of the Oasis Camel Dairy and lunch at Lake Cuyamaca Restaurant. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON City Council Member Tom Beck reported he will meet with the Olson Development Company to discuss a new development they are looking to build on the corner of Santa Anita and Live Oak. Council Member Beck mentioned he would like to see more commercial buildings included in the development. Council Member Beck reported on Friday, December 8, the highly anticipated H Mart will open its doors to the public and Council Member Beck will be there to welcome them to the community. Council Member Beck reported the next elections will take place on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. The election will include Council Members for Districts 2, 3, and 5 for four-year terms. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of October 5, 2017. It was moved by Commissioner Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Harper and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Harbicht, Harper, Leung, Martinez, Platt, Slemaker, NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Dickey ABSTAIN: Commissioner Gleason 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in November 2017 RS Cheung thanked everyone who attended the Veterans Luncheon on November 3. RS Cheung reported the Community Center was decorated by volunteers on November 28. II. Report on upcoming Activities for December 2017 RS Cheung mentioned to everyone an invitation to the Volunteer Holiday Luncheon was mailed and hopes everyone can attend the luncheon on Tuesday, December 19. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Wright reported the Arcadia Senior of the Year 2018 nomination forms are available at the Community Center and the deadline is February 16, 2018. ADRCS Wright reported the Holiday Snow Festival took place on Saturday, December 2 at the Arcadia Community Center. Approximately 2,000 participants enjoyed this free event, which included holiday entertainment, train rides, sled runs, and more. On the same day, the Breakfast with Santa event was held inside the Community Center. There were two seating times, 8:30am and 10:30am. Both times were sold out serving over 327 people. Children enjoyed holiday themed crafts, games, a hot chocolate station, breakfast, and pictures with Santa. ADRCS reported the yearly Arcadia Holiday Market event will be held on December 9 located on South 1st Street and Huntington in Arcadia and is free to the public. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 5pm to January 4, 2018 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia. :BY y att Candice Cheung Chairperson Secretary
