HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 01/04/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, January 4, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE —Administrative Assistant, Bani Antonacci ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: William Gleason, Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt, EXCUSED: John Dickey and Angie Slemaker A motion was made by Commissioner Harper, seconded by Gleason and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Dickey and Slemaker. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Harper reported the Senior Friendship Club is doing well. Commissioner Harper reported the Club's attendance is approximately 40 people each week. The Senior Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11 am at the Assistance League building. The club has pie day, birthday celebrations, special theme days, guest speakers, and bingo. January birthdays will be celebrated on January 10. Commissioner Harbicht reported the Assistance League had a successful holiday sale. A holiday party was held at the San Gabriel Country Club. Commissioner Martinez reported he attended a few events in December at the Community Center. Commissioner Martinez said he was very impressed on how well attended these events are and looking forward to attend more events in the future. Commissioner Gleason reported the Men's Club has approximately 20 members each week. Commissioner Gleason reported the club had a Christmas celebration last month and looking forward to resume their weekly meetings. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. Club members meet Wednesday's at 11 am. Chairperson Platt reported the new officers for 2018 were installed on Friday, December 15 and the club had their holiday luncheon at Clearman's Northwood Inn following the general meeting. Chairperson Platt reported Kathy Symons will be the Guest Speaker on January 26. Kathy Symons will present details of her trip to Iran. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers office was closed for two weeks during the holidays. Chairperson Platt reported the Connection Newsletter will now indicate how easy or difficult each trip will be for seniors. Each trip section will indicate a number next to the trip. Number 1 easy, 2 moderate, and 3 difficult. Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming 2018 trips: Wheels, Roads and Rail, Haunted Tour of Ventura, and New York, New York. Commissioner Leung said he will provide the Arcadia County Park lawn bowling information for the BUZZ brochure in a few weeks. Commissioner Leung reported seniors have mentioned there are too many turkey meals in the menu. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright said he would look into it. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON City Council Member Tom Beck reported the historic Denny's windmill detached and fell into the restaurant on December 29. Council Member Beck said there will be a discussion at a Council Meeting on who will pay for the repair. Council Member Beck reported the next election will take place on Tuesday, April 10. The election will include candidates for Districts 2, 3, and 5 for four- year terms. Council Member Beck reported the annual goal setting session will take place on January 30 at the Arcadia Library from 8am to 5pm to discuss goals for the year. Council Member Beck reported the Mardi Gras Food Fest 2018 will be held on Tuesday, February 13 at 6pm at Santa Anita Park. Tickets can be purchased through Methodist Hospital Foundation. Council Member Beck reported the City's Fire Department has the capacity to staff the positions of those firefighters who have to leave the city and work at other locations. Council Member Beck said the City is reimbursed by the state. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of December 7, 2017. It was moved by Commissioner Gleason, seconded by Commissioner Leung and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Gleason, Harbicht, Harper, Leung, Martinez, Platt NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Dickey and Slemaker ABSTAIN: None 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in December 2017. ADRCS Wright reported on activities held December. Each week seniors meet at the Community Center to play Bridge and there were 144 participants in the month of December. Coffee with The Mayor has become very popular. Seniors have the opportunity to hear the Mayor's ideas on topics and ask questions on personal interest. Coffee with the Mayor on December 5 had 34 seniors in attendance. ADRCS Wright reported the Gift Shop in the Community Center had 346 visitors and sales of $1,523. The pool tables have been recovered with green felt. There were 166 seniors who stopped by to play in the pool room. Walk and Talk takes place every Thursday at 10:30am. Seniors can meet before lunch for a short leisurely walk with a staff member. Taste the Town had 34 participants who enjoyed a buffet meal at the Derby on Thursday, December 14. ADRCS Wright reported on Tuesday, December 12, in collaboration with East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless Winter Shelter, department staff put together 25 gift bags for those less fortunate in the community. The bags were filled with small items like toiletries, snacks, gifts cards, gloves, and hats, all purchased by staff in lieu of a staff gift exchange. II. Report on upcoming Activities for January 2018. ADRCS Wright gave an update on upcoming events. Tax preparation will begin February 8 through April 12, appointments can be made starting January 5. Free blood pressure check will be available on Tuesday, January 9 at 10am. New Year's Brunch and Bingo will be held on Friday, January 12 from 10am to 1:30pm. Registration for the Chinese New Year Luncheon will begin January 12. The Arcadia Chinese Association and Arcadia Senior Services will celebrate "Year of the Dog" on Friday, February 9 which will include a traditional Chinese meal and entertainment. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Wright handed a copy of the Administrative Policy, Retention of Electronic Mail (E-mail) Policy to everyone and asked Commissioners to read the policy as it applies to City staff and Commissions. ADRCS Wright reported the 2018 Older Americans Recognition Day nomination forms are available at the Community Center and online. Forms must be submitted on or before February 16 by mail or in person at the Community Center. Candidates must be 55+ years of age, Arcadia resident, and actively involved in volunteer service within the community ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 5pm to February 1, 2018 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
