HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 02/01/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, February 1, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Vice-Chairperson Slemaker called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Harbicht ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: John Dickey, William Gleason, Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Ralph Martinez, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: Anthony Leung and Joyce Platt A motion was made by Commissioner Dickey, seconded by Commissioner Martinez and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Leung and Platt. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Harbicht reported the Assistance League Arcadia will be eliminating two of their programs for one year. The "Kids on the Block Program" which helps educate students in kindergarten through third grade, about experiencing some of life's challenges. The Assistance League Arcadia will also eliminate the "Baby Basics Program." The Baby Basics Program provides new and gently used infant clothing as well as baby supplies to low income new mothers. Commissioner Gleason reported there are 15 new members who have joined the Men's Club. Commissioner Gleason reported there are more women than men in the Men's Club. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. Club members meet Wednesday's at 11am. Commissioner Harper reported the Senior Friendship Club's attendance is down. The Senior Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11am at the Assistance League building. The Club has pie day, birthday celebrations, special theme days, guest speakers, and bingo. February birthdays and Valentine's Day will be celebrated on February 14. Commissioner Martinez reported salmon and fish meals have decreased each month. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Ryan Wright said he will look into the monthly menu. The City has a contract with Unified Nutrimeal who provides the meals for seniors every day and must also follow the Los Angeles County health guidelines. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON None 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the regular meeting minutes of January 4, 2018. Tabled to the March 1, 2018 Senior Citizens Commission Meeting due to lack of a quorum. 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in February 2018. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung reported the AARP held a workshop on Driver Safety in January with 89 participants in attendance. The workshop was very popular and will be offered again in October 2018. Certified AARP volunteer tax aides will prepare 2017 income tax returns for people 50 years of age and older every Thursday and Friday at no cost. Appointments are available and filling up through April 12. Registration for the Chinese New Year Luncheon sold out on January 12. The luncheon will be held on Friday, February 9 with a special invitation to the Senior Citizens Commission. II. Report on upcoming Activities for March 2018. RS Cheung reported the free Senior Expo will be held on March 9. There will be vendor booths, refreshments and a raffle. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Wright reported the City will implement a new social networking platform for the public to use. WeChat is a Chinese multi-purpose social media mobile application software used to communicate with those who speak Chinese. ADRCS Wright announced Senior Citizen of the Year nominations are open until Friday, February 16. The applications are available at the Community Center and the criteria needed for the application is: 55+ years of age, City of Arcadia resident, actively involved in volunteer work, and have made significant contributions to improve the community. The nomination forms will be included in the March 1 packet to be reviewed by Senior Commissioners. ADRCS Wright reported City offices will be closed Monday, February 19 in observance of President's Day. ADJOURNMENT Vice Chairperson Slemaker adjourned the meeting at 4:30pm to March 1, 2018 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
