HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 03/01/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, March 1, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Harper ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: John Dickey, William Gleason, Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt EXCUSED: Angie Slemaker A motion was made by Commissioner Dickey, seconded by Commissioner Harbicht and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Slemaker. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Harper reported the Senior Friendship Club's attendance is down. The Senior Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11am at the Assistance League building. The Club has pie day, birthday celebrations, special theme days, guest speakers, and bingo. March birthdays will be celebrated on March 14. The Club will have a special St. Patrick's Day luncheon on March 28. Commissioner Gleason reported there are 15 new members who have joined the Men's Club. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. Club members meet Wednesdays at 11am. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club is doing well. Travelers enjoyed a trip to the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs, including lunch at the Springs Hilton. Chairperson Platt reported extended trips are doing well. The Club has 10 extended trips with approximately 35 participants per trip. Chairperson Platt reported there are currently 350 members. Commissioner Dickey reported Medicare began in 1965 and for the first time since then, Medicare has extended the opportunity for people to enroll for the first time or change their plans. This extension will be available for those living in Northern and Southern California Counties through March 30. This is a good opportunity for those who are not satisfied with their plans, so long as they did not make any changes in 2017. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Tom Beck reported a public hearing will be held on March 27 for the Olson project on the corner of Las Tunas and Santa Anita. The project includes the request to develop the site with a mixed use project with 77 multi-family residential units and commercial space. Council Member Beck mentioned he would like to see more commercial buildings included in the development to go along with the residential development. Council Member Beck reported the City of Arcadia has a Slurry Seal Program in place to ensure the streets are maintained. Slurry sealing is a process used to keep the streets in good condition and avoids major reconstruction. The slurry seal 8-year grid map is available on the City's website. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of January 4, 2018. It was moved by Commissioner Martinez, seconded by Commissioner Gleason and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Gleason, Harbicht, Harper, Leung, Martinez, Platt, NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Slemaker ABSTAIN: Commissioner Dickey b. Regular meeting minutes of February 1, 2018. It was moved by Commissioner Harbicht, seconded by Commissioner Harper and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.b. AYES: Commissioners Dickey, Gleason, Harbicht, Harper, Martinez NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Slemaker ABSTAIN: Commissioners Leung and Platt 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Senior of the Year Senior Citizen Commissioners received all community nominations for the 2018 Senior of the Year. After much thought and careful consideration, Mary Hansen was nominated as the 2018 Senior of the Year. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung announced the honoree and said her family members will be invited to the Rotary Luncheon on Tuesday, May 8. The event will take place at the Arcadia Community Center at 11:30am. RS Cheung mentioned, Senior of the Year, Mary Hansen along with staff and family members will be invited to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the Los Angeles County Senior of the Year Luncheon on May 17. b. Silver Circle Volunteer and Commissioner Recognition Dinner RS Cheung reported the Senior Commission is invited to the Silver Circle Volunteer and Commissioners Recognition Dinner on Monday, April 2 at 5;30pm at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Arcadia. Invitations have been mailed and reservations are required by March 16. c. Report of Recreation Supervisor I. Report on Activities held in February 2018. RS Cheung reported on activities that took place in February. The Bridge Club meets every Wednesday at the Community Center and had 192 participants in February. Walk and Talk had 25 participants in February and will be walking to the Westfield Santa Anita Mall on April 5. AARP Income Tax volunteers filed 181 tax returns for local seniors. The Chinese New Year celebration was held on February 9 with 260 attendees. II. Report on upcoming Activities for March 2018. RS Cheung reported the yearly Senior Expo will be held on March 9 from 10am to 12:30pm. There will be vendor booths, refreshments, and a raffle. RS Cheung informed Commissioner Martinez she followed up with Unified Nutrimeal regarding the lunch menu. RS Cheung reported salmon will be served every two weeks starting in March. d. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi reported the Mayor's Breakfast will be held at the Arcadia Community Center on Friday, April 6. Former Los Angeles County Supervisor, Michael D. Antonovich, will be the keynote speaker. Reservations are required by March 28. RCSD Somogyi reported a sales tax measure to fund homeless services and prevention was approved. The City of Arcadia, along with 46 other cities across Los Angeles County, has been selected to be part of a grant program created by the County and United Way of Greater Los Angeles Home For Good Funders Collaborative to combat rising homelessness. The City is currently working with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Government to study, prevent, and combat homelessness in Arcadia. The City received a $30,000 grant to hire consultants to study homelessness and to work with other cities in San Gabriel Valley in order to come up with a regional plan through Measure H. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 5:00pm to April 5, 2018 at 5:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
