HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 04/05/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, April 5, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Dickey ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: John Dickey, William Gleason, Anthony Leung, Joyce Platt, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: Patsy Harbicht, Glynna Harper, Ralph Martinez A motion was made by Commissioner Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Gleason and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Harbicht, Harper, and Martinez. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well and Club members will celebrate birthdays for members over 90 years. Club members will also have their Annual Hat Parade and spring luncheon in April. Commissioner Gleason reported there are 15 new members who have joined the Men's Club. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. Club members meet Wednesdays at 11 am. Commissioner Dickey reported he would be happy to present a workshop for any group interested in Medicare. Commissioner Dickey said he can update people on Medicare 101, rules, regulations, current laws, and time frames regarding Medicare. Commissioner Dickey reported the presentation is approximately 45 minutes. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club is doing well. The Club is currently forming a nominating committee for the new 2019 officers. Chairperson Platt reported the following trips will take place in the next few months. Haunted Tour of Ventura, Edwards Air Force Base, Paramount Studios, Coastal Train Ride & USS Midway, King Tut Exhibit, Camarillo Ranch, and Santa Maria. Arcadia Travelers extended tours include trips to Iceland, Spain, Portugal, Rome, and the country roads of Tuscany. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Tom Beck reported he was happy to attend the Silver Circle Dinner and congratulated Chairperson Platt on the number of hours she has volunteered. Council Member Beck reported a public hearing was held on March 27 for the Olson project on the corner of Las Tunas and Santa Anita. The project was approved and will include 77 multi- family residential units and commercial space. Council Member Beck reported he will attend the Mayor's Breakfast on Friday, April 6. Council Member Beck reported the regular election will take place on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. It will be held to elect the Council Members for Districts 2, 3, and 5 for four-year terms. Council Member Beck reported Le Meridien Hotel will replace the Santa Anita Inn and construction will begin in 2018. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of March 1, 2018. Tabled to the May 3, 2018 Senior Citizens Commission Meeting due to lack of a quorum. 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in March 2018. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung reported Mahjong has become very popular at the Community Center with a total of 86 visitors in the month of March. AARP Tax volunteers filed a total of 336 2017 income taxes. On March 9, the Senior Expo was held at the Community Center with 252 people in attendance. II. Report on Activities held in April 2018. RS Cheung reported on upcoming events and seminars in April. On Thursday, April 19 at 1:30pm, City staff will lead a seminar to teach seniors how to register online. The Spring Fling event will be held at the Community Center on Friday, April 20 at 4:30pm. RS Cheung reported the lunch program is very popular and lunch sells out almost every day. Lunch tickets are sold daily and seniors can stop by the Community Center as early as 7:30am to purchase their ticket. Lunch is sold Monday through Friday from 11:30am to 12:15pm. The cost is $4 for people 50 to 54 years and $2 for anyone 55+ years. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RS Cheung thanked everyone for attending the Silver Circle dinner and welcomes any feedback regarding the event. RS Cheung reported the Community Bike Ride will take place on Saturday, May 5. Following the Bike Ride, participants are welcome to attend the Arcadia Firefighters' Association Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station 106. Tickets can be purchased at the door for only $7 per person. RS Cheung reported the Summer Camp and Class Expo will also be held on May 5 at Fire Station 106. RS Cheung reported Senior of the Year, Mary Hansen will be honored at the Rotary Lunch on May 8. RS Cheung invited the Senior Citizen Commissioners to the event. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 4:40pm to May 3, 2018 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia. �.
