HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 05/03/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 3, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Dickey ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: John Dickey, William Gleason, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: Patsy Harbicht, Anthony Leung A motion was made by Commissioner Dickey, seconded by Commissioner Martinez and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Harbicht and Leung. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi stated copies of the Senior Citizens Commission meeting minutes from March 1, 2018 are available at the meeting. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club had 28 members in attendance. The Club is doing well and Club members will celebrate birthdays on May 3 and Mother's Day will be celebrated on May 10. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday, at 11am at the Assistance League House in Arcadia. Commissioner Gleason reported there are new members who have joined the Men's Club. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. Club members meet Wednesdays at 11am at the Assistance League House in Acadia. Commissioner Martinez reported on behalf of the Assistance League. He said the Assistance League had a Tea Luncheon to recognize the Assisteens. The luncheon was very well attended, including the Superintendent from Arcadia Unified School District. Assisteens is a program open to young women and men in grades 7 to 12. The goals of participation are to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, personal responsibility, public speaking, and leadership skills. Assisteens raise money to fund ongoing philanthropic programs to benefit the community. Each Assisteen Auxiliary may choose their own programs and assist the chapter with their programs and fundraisers. Commissioner Dickey reported he offers a workshop for any group interested in Medicare. Commissioner Dickey said he can update people on Medicare 101, rules, regulations, current laws, and time frames regarding Medicare. Commissioner Dickey reported the presentation is approximately 45 minutes. Commissioner Dickey asked if the Arcadia Community Center can promote and teach voter registration or have voter registration forms available for the public. RCSD Somogyi said she would look into this request and report back at the next meeting. Chairperson Platt reported Mayor Amundson will continue as acting Mayor for another 45 days until the June 5th City Council Meeting. Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming Travelers trips: King Tut Exhibit on May 16, Coastal Train Ride & USS Midway on June 6, Paramount Studios on June 19, Edwards Air Force Base on June 26, Tanaka Farms on July 17, Salsa Festival in Oxnard on July 29, Amazon Distribution Center on August 3, and Santa Barbara Zoo on August 9. Chairperson Platt reported Ernie the Wonder Dog and its trainer will be at the general meeting on May 25. Ernie is a service dog and his trainer will talk about how service dogs are trained and will be available for questions. Chairperson Platt reported the Assistance League has the Las Alas Auxiliary program that is instrumental in providing hygiene kits and school supplies for Operation School Bell. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in April 2018. RCSD Somogyi reported on April activities and events. Coffee with the Mayor on May 1t had 25 seniors in attendance. There were 2,700 seniors who signed up for exercise classes. Senior Monday Dance is a very popular event with 145 participants in attendance in April. Senior Monday Dance takes place on the 15i 3rd and 5th Monday of each month. Yuan Chi Dance is available every Tuesday from 1 to 3pm at the Community Center with 62 participants in April. RCSD Somogyi reported the City extended the senior meals contract for an additional year. RCSD Somogyi reported themed Bunco has become increasingly popular with seniors and is now available every other month. There were 56 participants in attendance at Carnival Bunco on April 13. This year AARP Tax Preparation Volunteers assisted a record breaking 749 taxpayers by answering questions and e-filling their 2017 income taxes. RCSD Somogyi reported the Braille Mobile Van is available at the Community Center parking lot every month by appointment only. II. Report on Upcoming Activities May 2018. RCSD Somogyi reported on upcoming events in May. RCSD Somogyi reported Bingo will be held on May 4. The Community Annual Bike Ride will be held on Saturday, May 5. The event is a seven mile ride through the beautiful city of Arcadia. A raffle for a bike, helmets, and other bike equipment will be available. After the Bike Ride, participants can join the Arcadia Firefighters at the pancake breakfast at Fire Station 106. The Summer Class & Camp Expo will also take place on Saturday, May 5 at Fire Station 106. RCSD Somogyi reported the Rotary Salute to Seniors Luncheon will honor Senior of the Year, Mary Hansen at the Rotary Lunch on May 8. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RCSD Somogyi reported the Arcadia Field of Honor will be held from May 20 to May 28 at the Arcadia County Park with opening ceremony on Sunday, May 20 at 1 pm. On Saturday, May 26 from 10am to 2pm there will be a tribute to Veterans and Military families at the Arcadia County Park. The event will feature skydivers, military vehicles, equipment displays, live entertainment, and a food court. RCSD Somogyi reported the War Memorial Monument construction will begin the week of May 14 at the Recreation and Community Center lawn.
