HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 06/07/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, June 7, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Gleason ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: William Gleason, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt, Angie Slemaker EXCUSED: John Dickey, Patsy Harbicht A motion was made by Commissioner Gleason, seconded by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Dickey and Harbicht. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club has up to 28 members in attendance each week. The Club is doing well and Club members will celebrate birthdays on June 7 and a potluck celebration for Father's Day. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday, at 11 am at the Assistance League in Arcadia. Commissioner Gleason reported there are new members who have joined the Men's Club. The Arcadia Men's Club invites anyone who likes to play card games, bridge, pinochle, canasta, or other games to join them. The Men's Club meets Wednesdays at 8am at the Assistance League in Acadia. Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming trips: Coastal Train Ride & USS Midway on June 6, Always Salsa Festival in Oxnard on July 29, Medieval Times on August 4, Santa Barbara Zoo on August 9, Patsy Klein on September 9, and Route 66 on September 27. Chairperson Platt reported Retired Lt. Colonel Robert Friend will be the guest speaker at the Travelers meeting on June 22. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of May 3, 2018. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Gleason and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Gleason, Martinez, Platt, Slemaker NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Dickey and Harbicht ABSTAIN: Commissioner Leung 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in May 2018. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Candice Cheung reported on Thursday, May 17, Senior Commissioner Platt and Recreation Supervisor, Candice Cheung attended the Older Americans Recognition Day Awards Program. Arcadia resident and volunteer, Mary Hansen, was honored as the City of Arcadia 2018 Senior of the Year. RS Cheung reported also on Thursday, May 17, Arcadia Senior Services escorted 34 seniors to the Air Quality Management District Healthy Living and Clean Air Fair at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Seniors attended a lecture on air quality and participated in chair aerobics. RS Cheung reported Mahjong is becoming popular and is now offered every Friday afternoon. II. Report on Upcoming Activities June 2018. RS Cheung said Bunco is a very popular event and encourages all seniors to attend. RS Cheung reported Evening of Music will be held on Friday, June 15 with special entertainment provided by the Darden Sisters. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi reported the Veteran's Memorial is almost complete. The public is invited to attend the unveiling of the Arcadia Veteran's Memorial on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10am in front of the Arcadia Community Center. The Veteran's Memorial was made possible through the generosity of the Rotary Club of Arcadia and Arcadia resident Mary Hansen. RCSD Somogyi reported Concerts & Movies in the Park will begin Thursday, June 28. RCSD Somogyi reported the Community Center parking lot will be undergoing construction in the near future. RCSD Somogyi reported Youth Summer Day Camp begins Monday, June 11 through August 10. The Day Camp at Wilderness Park includes daily roundtrip transportation, arts, crafts, weekly excursion, and a camp t-shirt. Summer Sports Camp begins Monday, July 23 through August 10. Sports Camp is a fun atmosphere where campers learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports. Extended Care will be available at Dana Middle School. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 4:40pm to August 2, 2018 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
