HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 12/06/2018 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, December 6, 2018 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:05pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Salter ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: William Gleason, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt, Donna Salter, Dorothy Wadley ABSENT: Anthony Leung, Angie Slemaker, and Edith Slemmon A motion was made by Commissioner Martinez, seconded by Commissioner Wadley and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Leung, Slemaker, and Slemmon. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Wadley reported the Friendship Club is doing well. There is a great group of people and members enjoying Bingo each week. The Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11 am at the Assistance League. Commissioner Salter attended the Moonlight Festival and the Arcadia Gardens lighting ceremony. Commissioner Salter asked if the Arboretum can arrange for seniors who cannot walk long distance, or in a wheelchair, some kind of transportation throughout the Moonlight Festival event next year. City Council Member Beck said the Arboretum may not want vans or trams in the walkway during the event for safety reasons. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi said she will inquire about this matter. Commissioner Martinez thanked everyone at the Arcadia Recreation and Community Center for well-organized events and also for the great response from the community throughout the year. Commissioner Gleason reported the Men's Club had their Christmas Party for 25 members and their spouses. The Arcadia Senior Men's Club is open from 8am to 2:30pm and invites men and women who like to play card games, bridge, canasta, or other games. A light lunch is served at 11:30am. Chairperson Platt reported the new officers for 2019 will be installed on Friday, December 21 with a special presentation by Holy Angels Choir. Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming Holiday trips: Travelers will enjoy Tibbie's Holiday Follies on December 15, Christmas at the Reagan Library on December 19, Huntington Harbor Festival of Lights on December 20, and The Wild West on January 10. Chairperson Platt reported on extended tours: Hawaii 3 Island Adventure and Greece in March 2019, a River Cruise in Holland in April 2019, and Treasures of Egypt in October 2019. Information and schedule of trips are advertised in the monthly newsletter, The Connection and also available at ArcadiaTravelers.com. Chairperson Platt had a few questions from senior citizens. The first question: When will construction begin on the development at Santa Anita and Live Oak? Council Member Beck responded there is no strict timeline. There is a long process to have plans approved, including approval by the Police Department and Fire Department which could take from six months to one year. The second question: Will Prince Erik Hall be torn down? Council Member Beck said Prince Erik Hall is on the designated list for historical preservation. Council Member Beck said he was not sure what will happen at this time. Prince Erik Hall may be moved or it could be purchased by a developer. It is uncertain what will happen until this matter goes through the Planning Commission, then to City Council. The last question: Has the crosswalk on Duarte Road been removed? Council Member Beck said the crosswalk at 627 W. Duarte Road, between Lovell Street and Baldwin Boulevard was removed due to safety concerns. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON City Council Member Beck reported the following; The Denny's restaurant Windmill is up and running and has the ability to change colors with light-emitting diode (LED) lights. The Police Chief's breakfast will be held on December 13 from 7-9am at the Police Department. The Arcadia Chinese Association is having their Annual Fundraiser on Saturday, December 15 at 6pm, at the Arcadia Community Center. Santa Anita Park is hosting the Winterfest through January 6 and admission is only $5. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of November 1, 2018. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Salter, seconded by Commissioner Gleason and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Gleason, Martinez, Platt, Salter, Wadley NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioners Slemaker, Slemmon, and Leung ABSTAIN: None 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in November 2018. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung reported Monday Dance has been very popular and noticed there are buses from different senior housing centers dropping seniors off. Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of the month for only $3 at the door. ADRCS Cheung reported on November 27, Arcadia Community Center volunteers decorated two beautiful Christmas trees at the center. ADRCS Cheung reported the Annual Veterans Day lunch was held on November 8 to honor those who served in the military. Guests looked forward to the delicious chicken pot pie being served and have also requested that the menu remain the same each year. Nationally renowned opera singer, Daniel Rodriguez entertained 200 seniors during the event. II. Report on Upcoming Activities December 2018. ADRCS Cheung reported the Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department staff will be putting bags filled with essentials for the homeless on December 11. If anyone is interested in donating items, please bring them to the center by December 11. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi said, in lieu of staff exchanging gifts with one another, staff will purchase different items such as grooming essentials, snacks, scarves, and gift cards for approximately 25 homeless bags that are delivered to a homeless shelter, this has been a holiday tradition for over 10 years. ADRCS Cheung reported the sold out Senior Holiday Brunch will be held on Friday, December 7 at 10:30am. ADRCS Cheung reported invitations were mailed and hopes everyone can attend the Volunteer Holiday Luncheon on Tuesday, December 18. RSVP to ADRCS Cheung as soon as possible. ADRCS Cheung reported the Arcadia Senior of the Year 2019 nomination forms are available at the Community Center and the deadline is February 15, 2019. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RCSD Somogyi introduced (RS) Gina Hernandez. RS Hernandez has been with the City for 12 years and will be the new supervisor at the Community Center. Beginning in January 2019, RS Hernandez will be the Liaison for the Senior Citizens Commission. RCSD Somogyi thanked everyone for allowing her to present to senior clubs on the City's financial status. RCSD Somogyi reported the Tree Lighting Ceremony was cancelled on December 6 due to inclement weather.
