SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia
Recreation Conference Room.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: William Gleason, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Joyce Platt,
Donna Salter, Edith Slemmon,
ABSENT: Angie Slemaker, and Dorothy Wadley
A motion was made by Commissioner Slemmon, seconded by Commissioner Martinez and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Slemaker, and Wadley.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None
PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Gleason reported the Senior Men's Club had a very nice Christmas Party for 25
members and their spouses. Attendance has been good with approximately 30 members. The
Arcadia Senior Men's is open from 8am to 2:30pm and invites men and women who like to play
card games, bridge, canasta, or other games. A light lunch is served at 11:30am.
Commissioner Martinez thanked everyone at the Arcadia Recreation and Community Center for
a nice volunteer luncheon held at the Arcadia Community Center on December 18. Over 80
volunteers attended and enjoyed a festive meal, games and entertaiment by Holy Angels
School Choir. Commissioner Martinez reported the Arcadia Hot Sheet has an article on Clean
Power Alliance where Arcadia residents will be automatically enrolled in Clean Power Alliance's
renewable electricity offering.
Commissioner Salter reported she enjoyed the volunteer luncheon on December 18 at the
Community Center.
Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers office was closed for two weeks during the holidays.
Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming January trips: Travelers will enjoy the Wild West on
January 10, a trip to Calico Ghost Town; Those Were The Days on January 15 where Travelers
will also enjoy the view to the Pomona Valley Mining Company, and Let them Eat Cake, a trip to
numerous stops to selected bakeries will take place on January 31. Chairperson Platt reported
the new officers for 2019 were installed on Friday, December 21 with entertaiment by Holy
Angels Choir. The Club also had their holiday luncheon at Clearman's Northwood Inn following
the general meeting.
Commissioner Slemmon reported the Bargain Box did very well during the holidays.
Commissioner Slemmon mentioned the Friends of the Historical Society is looking for new
friends to help sponsor the Annual Spring Tea. There are many members but not active enough.
Commissioner Slemmon reported Operation School is a program that provides new school
uniforms and clothing to children. Each child is provided shirts, pants, socks, a backpack and
much more.

a. Regular meeting minutes of December 6, 2018.
Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved by Commissioner Salter, seconded by Commissioner Gleason and carried on roll
call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a.

NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioners Slemaker and Wadley
ABSTAIN: Commissioners Leung and Slemmon
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
I. Report on Activities held in December 2018.
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Hernandez is the new supervisor at the Community Center and will
be the Liaison for the Senior Citizens Commission. RS Hernandez reported there were 150
participants at the Senior Holiday Brunch on December 7. Seniors enjoyed brunch and
entertainment by the Azusa Pacific International Choir.
II. Report on Upcoming Activities January 2019.
RS Hernandez reported on upcoming events. New Year's Bingo will be held on January 11 at
10:30am. Registration for the Chinese New Year Luncheon will be held on January 11 starting
at 7:30am. The Chinese New Year Luncheon will be held on Friday, February 8 at the Arcadia
Community Center and the Senior Citizens Commission is welcome to attend by contacting
Administrative Assistant, Bani Antonacci. RS Hernandez reported Pickleball is becoming a
popular sport and classes will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays beginning January 8 at Camino
Grove Park.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
Assistant Recreation and Community Services Director (ARCSD) Candice Cheung asked
everyone to inform Senior Clubs to submit nomination forms for the 2019 Senior of the Year.
There are so many seniors who volunteer their time in Arcadia and the Community Center is
accepting nomination forms until February 15. ARCSD Cheung reported the wooden floors in
the main ballroom at the Community Center have been refinished. ARCSD Cheung reported RS
Hernandez's office is located at the Community Center, and ARCSD Cheung's is now at the
Recreation office.
Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 4:40pm to February 7, 2019 at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
