HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 04/04/2019 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, April 4, 2019 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Vice-Chairperson Slemaker ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: William Gleason, Anthony Leung, Joyce Platt, Donna Salter, Angie Slemaker, Edith Slemmon, Dorothy Wadley ABSENT: Ralph Martinez and William Gleason A motion was made by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Salter and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Martinez and Gleason. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported there were approximately 30 people in attendance the week of March 25, everyone enjoyed ice-cream cones. Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11 am at the Assistance League. Commissioner Salter reported she was happy to attend the Silver Circle Dinner and congratulated Chairperson Platt on the number of hours she has volunteered. Commissioner Salter asked if the City of Arcadia has a Phone Reassurance Program. Director of Recreation and Community Services (DRCS) Sara Somogyi said the Community Center has the program and will look into advertising it in the monthly newsletter, the Connection. Commissioner Slemmon reported there will be a Garden Tea hosted by Carol Libby on Sunday, May 19. Commissioner Slemmon encourages everyone to stop by the Bargain Box to browse or shop for many great items on sale. The Bargain Box is open for business from 10am to 3pm Wednesday through Saturday. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club is doing well and the club currently has over 300 members. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club monthly general meeting will be held on Friday, April 26, and the following are upcoming tours: The Olympic Training Center on Tuesday, June 18, where participants will enjoy a tour and learn about the athletes and sports venue. The John Denver Story on July 14. Just Trust Me, a mystery tour will take place on July 25. Chairperson Platt reported there will be a guest speaker who will talk about famous Arcadians, from athletes to musicians. Chairperson Platt asked RCSD Somogyi if it would be possible to arrange for an informational workshop on Clean Power Alliance. DRCS Somogyi said it is a good idea and will look into it. Commissioner Leung reported the soup and chili served during the lunch program is too salty. DRCS Somogyi said the information will be passed along to the provider, Unified Nutrimeals. Commissioner Wadley reported she attended a day trip with the Travelers Club members to the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro. Commissioner Wadley reported the Friendship Club had a good month and encourages everyone to visit the Club on Wednesdays at the Assistance League. Members enjoy birthday celebrations, pie day, and a regular meeting each week. If anyone is looking for a place to visit and meet new friends, they can stop by the Senior Friendship Club. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON None 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of March 7, 2019. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Slemmmon, seconded by Commissioner Slemaker and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Leung, Platt, Salter, Slemaker, Slemmon, and Wadley NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioners Gleason and Martinez ABSTAIN: None 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor I. Report on Activities held in March 2019. DRCS Somogyi introduced Recreation Coordinator (RC) Emily Buchanan who will present the Recreation Supervisor report. RC Buchanan reported winter classes ended the last week of March with over 4,500 participants. There will be a break in between spring classes which will begin the week of April 8. RC Buchanan routed a sign-in sheet for Senior Commissioners who are interested in attending the Senior of the Year, Rotary Luncheon on Tuesday, May 7 at 11:30am. RC Buchanan reported registration for upcoming events in May took place on March 26 and it was a busy morning with the Rotary Luncheon selling out. II. Report on Upcoming Activities April 2019. RC Buchanan reported the Spring Fling 70s Dance Party will take place on Friday, April 5 from 4:30 to 7pm which will include dinner, dancing, a dessert bar, and photo booth. RC Buchanan reported the last day to file taxes at the Community Center is April 11 and a free seminar on Fall Prevention and Home Safety will be held on April 19. RC Buchanan mentioned she really enjoys overseeing the senior programs and enjoys the interaction with the public. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director DRCS Somogyi thanked everyone for volunteering their time and attending the Silver Circle Dinner dedicated to all City volunteers. DRCS Somogyi reported the Community Services Department won the California Parks & Recreation Society (CPRS) 2018 Award of Excellence in the category of Creating Community for the Senior Cultural Day Camp Program. DRCS Somogyi reported on the Community Update on Measure A with a PowerPoint presentation. The Citizens Financial Advisory Committee was appointed by the City Council where five members served in an advisory capacity to help review the City's long-term financial forecast, and provided recommendations to the City Council. The Citizens Financial Advisory Committee recommended increasing the City's sales tax. The City Council then voted to place the item on the June 4, 2019 ballot. Measure A will maintain City services such as 911 emergency response times to home break-ins and thefts, Fire Paramedic Services, and other essential City services. Measure A requires that all funds are used locally. It requires annual financial audits and public reports to ensure funds are spent properly. Measure A funds are protected by law from the state. No funds can be taken by Sacramento. Measure A is not a tax on home or property. A full copy of the report is also available on the City's website at ArcadiaCA.gov/measureA.
