SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia
Recreation Conference Room.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Slemmon reported it was a good month at the Bargain Box and encourages
everyone to stop by to browse or shop for many great items on sale. The Bargain Box is open
for business from 10am to 3pm Wednesday through Saturday.
Commissioner Martinez asked if the Recreation and Community Services Department could
provide an informational pamphlet on chair exercises in order to motivate people to move and
exercise a little more. Commissioner Martinez said moving and exercising can always improve
people's lives. Assistant Recreation and Community Services Director (ARCSD) Candice
Cheung said the Department will create an informational flyer for the informational and referral
cabinet provided to the public and available at the Community Center. Commissioner Martinez
said he would like to commend staff on the programs, exercise classes, and events offered at
the Community Center.
Commissioner Salter reported she was happy to attend the Assistance League Tea event last
month.
Commissioner Gleason reported the Men's Club has up to 20 members each week. The
Arcadia Senior Men's Club is open from 8am to 2:30pm every Monday and invites men and
women who like to play card games, bridge, canasta, or other games. A light lunch is served at
11:30am.
Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. The Golden Age Club
has approximately 25 people in attendance each week. During the month of April, Golden Age
Club members had a spring luncheon and their annual Easter hat parade. Vice-Chairperson
Slemaker reported the Assistance League Tea event was nice and the decorations were very
impressive. Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported a few Golden Age Club members have tried to
purchase lunch tickets at the Arcadia Community Center, however, lunch is always sold out.
ARCSD Cheung said lunch tickets go on sale at 7:30am and seniors may purchase a limit of
four tickets on a first come, first served basis. ARCSD Cheung mentioned Wednesdays are
usually the busiest day of the week and lunch is usually sold out by 10:30am.
Commissioner Wadley reported the Friendship Club had a good month with up to 28 people in
attendance each week. A pizza party, and their annual Easter hat parade were held in April.
The Friendship Club had a guest speaker from Methodist Hospital at one of their meetings in
April to talk about food and nutrition. Commissioner Wadley encourages everyone to visit the
Friendship Club on Wednesdays at the Assistance League. Members enjoy birthday
celebrations, pie day, and a regular meeting each week. If anyone is looking for a place to visit
and meet new friends, they can visit the Senior Friendship Club.
Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club is doing well. Chairperson Platt reported new
Officers for 2020 will be elected in June and installed in January 2020. Chairperson Platt
reported the next general meeting will be held on May 24 with guest speaker Curt Tucker.
Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming tours: On August 22, participants will travel to the
historic Mount Wilson Observatory and Mendocino Farms. On August 25, participants will travel
to Buena Park for a Pirate Dinner adventure. On August 26, there will be a San Diego overnight
trip. The Travelers Club Office is located at the Arcadia Community Center and open Monday
through Friday from 9am to 12:30pm.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Tom Beck said he is very happy to have been re-appointed by Mayor Verlato
as the Liaison to the Senior Citizens Committee. Council Member Beck reported the Arcadia
Firefighters' Association Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 7am
to noon. The cost is $7 at the door. Council Member Beck reported the City's Budget Study
Session will take place on Tuesday, May 7 and the Budget Adoption Public Hearing will be
presented at the Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 4. Council Member Beck reported the
Pasadena Humane Society presentation of an adoptable dog will be presented at the next
Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 7.
Council Member Beck said Measure A will be an item on the June 4, 2019 Ballot. Measure A
will maintain City services such as 9-1-1 emergency response times, home break-ins and thefts,
school and park police patrols, fire/paramedic services, and other City services. Chairperson
Platt asked if the City can inform the general public more about Measure A. Council Member
Beck said City Council cannot promote Measure A, however, mailers have been mailed to
residents, and he also encourages everyone to inform their Clubs about it. Council Member
Beck said the Denny's in Arcadia on Huntington and Santa Anita is up for sale subject to its
lease.

It was moved by Commissioner Gleason, seconded by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker and carried on
roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a.

2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Report on Activities held in April 2019.
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported the Spring Fling 70s dance party was
held on April 5 from 4:30 to 7pm. Participants enjoyed a night of dancing, dinner, photo booth,
dessert, and raffles. Bunny Bunco was held on April 12. Bunco has become very popular at the
Community Center. Parkinson Awareness Seminar was held on April 16 with a guest speaker
from Altura who is partnered with the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
II. Report on Upcoming Activities May 2019.
RS Hernandez reported Mahjong with the Mayor, a new program will be available for seniors to
play with the Mayor. The first program will be held on Friday, May 10 at 1pm. Pizza and Bingo
will be held on Friday, May 17. RS Hernandez reported registration is open for Jungle Bunco
which will be held on Friday, June 7 and the Luau to be held on Friday, June 14. RS Hernandez
reminded everyone the Rotary Salute to Seniors Luncheon on Tuesday, May 7 at 11:30am.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
ARCSD Cheung reported the Telephone Reassurance Program is available and will be
advertised in June's Connection. The Community Center will have a free Clean Power Alliance
Seminar on Tuesday, July 9 at 1:30pm. ARCSD Cheung reported The Arcadia Fire Department
worked with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to designate the Arcadia
Community Center as a Medical Point of Dispensing Site. The City of Arcadia is the first
organization in Area D to officially complete a Memorandum of Understanding, Incident Action
Plan, Field Operations Manual, and training. ARCSD Cheung reported the Community Bike
Ride will take place on Saturday, May 4, check in will be at the Community Center.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 5:05pm to June 6, 2019 at 4:00pm in the Arcadia
Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
