HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 06/06/2019 SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, June 6, 2019 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Platt called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Slemmon ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Anthony Leung, Joyce Platt, Donna Salter, Angie Slemaker Edith Slemmon, and Dorothy Wadley ABSENT: William Gleason and Ralph Martinez A motion was made by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker, seconded by Commissioner Salter and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Gleason and Martinez. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Slemmon reported the Bargain Box is doing great, good quality items are donated and encourages everyone to stop by. The Bargain Box is open for business from 10am to 3pm Wednesday through Saturday. Commissioner Wadley reported the Friendship Club had a Mother's Day celebration in May with a nice lunch from Panda Express. Gifts were handed out to the oldest and youngest mothers. Commissioner Wadley reported a guest speaker from Methodist Hospital stopped by to talk about nutrition. Commissioner Leung reported patrons have mentioned the food is too salty. Director of Recreation and Community Services (DRCS) Sara Somogyi said she would provide his feedback to the vendor. Vice-Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. The Golden Age Club had 120 people attend in May. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11 am at the Assistance League. Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club is doing well. Chairperson Platt reported new Officers for 2020 will be elected in June and installed at the end of the year to begin office in January 2020. Chairperson Platt reported Mayor Verlato is doing an excellent job at Coffee with the Mayor. The Mayor is very informative, and answers questions from the audience. Chairperson Platt reported the Traveler's Club is doing well and participants are on trip at the Lavender Festival. Chairperson Platt reported this will be her last meeting. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Tom Beck was happy to report the Rotary Senior Luncheon was very nice. Council Member Beck reported Measure A passed. Measure A was an item on the June 4, 2019 ballot to maintain City services such as 9-1-1 emergency response times, home break-ins and thefts, school and park police patrols, fire/paramedic services, and other City services. Measure A requires all funds to be used in Arcadia and requires independent annual audits and public reports to verify that funds are spent properly. Council Member Beck reported he is very impressed with Mayor Verlato, who is not only the new Mayor of the City of Arcadia, she is also a full-time attorney, mother of two, and finds the time to attend every event and meetings held. Council Member Beck reported horse sales in Arcadia were held on Wednesday, June 5 at Arcadia Santa Anita Park and the next horse sale event will take place on September 25. 1. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of May 2, 2019. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Slemmon, seconded by Vice-Chairperson Slemaker and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a. AYES: Commissioners Leung, Platt, Salter, Slemaker, Slemmon, and Wadley NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioners Gleason and Martinez ABSTAIN: None 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in May 2019. Assistant Recreation and Community Services Director (ARCSD) Candice Cheung reported the Rotary Luncheon had over 300 people attend the event. On May 10, Mayor Verlato stopped by the Community Center to play Mahjong with seniors. Everyone who attended Mahjong is looking forward to play Mahjong with the Mayor each month. On May 10, the Community Center held the Cinco de Mayo event with themed food and entertainment. II. Report on Upcoming Activities for June 2019. ARCSD Cheung reported Jungle Bunco will be held on June 7 at 12:30pm. On June 14, the Annual Luau will be held at the Community Center. ARCSD Cheung thanked Chairperson Platt for her service as Commissioner. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Director of Recreation and Community Services (DRCS) Sara Somogyi reported the Concert and Movie series will begin Thursday, June 20. There will be seven weeks of concerts and movies at City Hall West Lawn. Parking is free and a food truck will be there each week. DRCS Somogyi reported the City resubmitted a multi-jurisdictional grant proposal for funds to help get homeless individuals into rapid housing program. The City of Arcadia received a congratulatory letter from the County of Los Angeles. The funds will cover a case manager, motel vouchers, and rapid rehousing. The case manager will work part of the time in Arcadia and the other half in South Pasadena. DRCS Somogyi also thanked Chairperson Platt for volunteering these past few years and a pleasure to work with. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Platt adjourned the meeting at 4:52pm to August 1, 2019 4:00pm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
