The Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage
Museum Curator’s Report
July - August, 2019
Visitors to the Museum and Museum Education Center
June 10-30: # 276
July 2019: # 557
August 1-27: # 206
HIGHLIGHTS
The Museum’s very first ever Summer Enrichment Program for
children aged 5-12 was planned and presented by Museum
Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto. It attracted approximately
300 people in attendance throughout the month of July.
EXHIBITS
A small exhibit has been placed in the Kid’s Corner room showcasing items from the Arcadia High
School Class of 1969. The exhibit features local Arcadia High School memorabilia from 50 years
ago.
The new Veteran’s Exhibit now features Charles E. Gilb, a longtime Arcadian, former Mayor of
the City of Arcadia, and major donor to the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. His exhibit will be
on display from July 2019 to June 2020.
Staff has spoken with the niece of Riyo Sato and discussed the Riyo Sato sketches and the
Museum’s commitment to continuing to rotate that collection monthly for the public to view.
Debbie Turner’s six-month loan ended in August; therefore, she requested her Sound of Music
items be returned. These items were on display in the Arcadia in the Movies exhibit space.
Staff is currently working on an overall plan for touchscreens and other interactive devices for the
exhibit spaces. An iPad and iPad stand have been purchased in August to begin the process.
The DAR grant will also provide a touchscreen for $1,500. The purchase of those items will take
place in the month of September.
The Fitness and Health Student Art Contest Exhibit opening
was on Saturday, August 24 at 10 a.m. The Museum invited all
the student artists, ranging from 4 to 17 years old from the San
Gabriel Valley, for a reception where the Curator congratulated
them and presented each student with a certificate for their
participation in the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display until
October 19. Summer Volunteer Wayne Chien from the
University of California Santa Cruz assisted the Curator in the
curation and installation of the exhibit.
COLLECTIONS
The Curator spent time accessing the current collections at the Museum to determine what still
needs accessioning and what percentage of the collection is in the PastPerfect database. This
summer, college volunteer Matthew Ha from California State Polytechnic University of San Luis
Obispo assisted in creating an inventory of all the items located in the Museums’ archive filing
cabinet, containing over 2,400 documents and photographs. Muhammad Rasayad Rasayamond,
a volunteer from Pasadena City College, has also assisted this summer with the inventory of all
2
items found in the collections space shelves to see what has or what has not received an
accession number. The Museum plans to apply for the Getty Multicultural Undergraduate
Internship grant to assist with collections in February of 2020.
The Curator has added donation guidelines to the Museum’s website. The guidelines inform
potential donors that items chosen cannot be duplicates of what is already present in the
collections. It also emphasizes that only items related to Arcadia history and heritage will be
considered for donation. Potential donors will be asked to set up an appointment with the Curator
at least two weeks in advance and that no drop-in donations will be accepted. These much needed
guidelines will better inform the public of what the Museum can and cannot accept and takes into
consideration the very limited space available for collections.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Jessie Ramirez recently donated two photo albums in June, portraying photographs of
people who lived in Arcadia and in the San Gabriel Valley.
Rosalie Mandala donated five Arcadia High School Student handbooks from 1967-1970 in
June. One of those handbooks is currently on display with the Class of 1969 items.
David Chen donated a large photograph of the Taiwan Mountain found on Taiwan’s currency.
Previous donor to the Museum, Agnes Chin, also had it framed for the Museum.
The Museum received an unknown donation of a California Bicentennial book by Whitey
Starr’s Chevron Service 1769-1969. This donation was left outside the front door with no
note.
Jennifer Jackson donated the silver service items from the Arcadia Council PTA & Santa
Anita PTA on behalf of the Arcadia PTA.
Larry Mocnick donated his Arcadia High School Auto Show 1976 1st Place “Small Foreign”
trophy, a photo of his car, and a “Dune Buggies and Hot VW’s” magazine (March 1977) via
mail.
Dorkas Aunger donated 37 Books that range from the mid-1850s to early 1900s.These books
are currently in the Museum’s freezer to get rid of any pests present.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Slime Day on June 15 was one of the first programs our new Museum
Education Coordinator, Brittani Alberto, did on her own, and was
assisted by several teen volunteers. Approximately 80 people attended
this program.
The Kensington Sierra Madre Retirement Home came in on July 25 with
26 of their residents to see the Museum. They had previously signed up
for a tour in the month of March and had to reschedule for July.
Summer Enrichment Program was the very first summer program
planned and presented by Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto. Each week,
students were introduced to new topics with hands-on
activities to help reinforce their learning and discovery.
The topics were Naturalist, Archaeologist, Paleontologist
and Historian. A registration form was created, along with
an end of program survey, to capture comments from
those in attendance. Families were encouraged to go to
the Museum after the program to participate in the
Museum’s Scavenger Hunt. Guests would then get a
small prize when all items were located.
3
Arcadia at the Movies was a Hal Roach Tribute celebration. In
July, the featured films included Laurel and Hardy classics The
Music Box and The Little Rascals/Our Gang Bored of Education
and Silent Short: Ask Grandma. In August, the feature film was
Hells Angels, featuring scenes from the old Ross Balloon School
Field. Film historian AJ Downhower gave an hour-long
PowerPoint talk highlighting the directors, producers, actors,
and their backgrounds and significance in the movie world.
A Girl Scout Program was held on Saturday, August 17 for a Junior’s troop. The topic
discussed with the Education Coordinator was “Inside the Government”, where the girls
were able to learn about bills and learn how to write their own. There were 23 people in
attendance.
An adult special needs group came to the Museum on August 7 and participated in the
Museum’s scavenger hunt. They loved it and received pencils as prizes for completing it.
A Pop-Up Museum event is been planned for August 31, to debut a new program that
will take place weekly at the Museum on Wednesdays.
ADMINISTRATION
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) met in June through August and are eagerly
working on their September 14 fundraiser. The Director and Curator attended the
meetings and engaged in pertinent discussion.
For the month of July, Library Aide Arlene Hom, helped cover the desk at the Museum,
while also helping register people for the Summer Enrichment Program. She was an
essential part of the Museum staff and provided artifacts for the Museum to use in the
programs, such as prehistoric petrified wood and a wagon.
MARKETING
Museum staff have begun regularly posting upcoming events at the Museum and Floretta
K. Lauber Museum Education Center on social media. The Museum website has been
updated to include information on this Fall’s Preschool Program and Pop-Up Museum.
The Museum programs, exhibits, and collections are marketed in a variety of ways to the
community. Fliers were passed out at two of the City’s Summer Concerts at City Hall, and
were put out at the Library.
This summer, there were multiple Yelp reviews about the Museum, all very favorable.
GRANTS
California Revealed Grant provided $10,000 to create 2,300 item-level
records for the Arcadia Woman’s Club collection, including scrapbooks and
photographs. The catalog records will be passed on to the California State
Library for consideration for the next round of nomination for digitization and
inclusion for California Revealed’s online collection. The grant helped to pay
for two interns, Rebecca Andersen and Pamela Gutierrez, to work with the
collections and provide some much-needed supplies to help curate these
collections. Their project was to catalog and digitize the 300 Woman’s Club
scrapbooks and items, including letters from President Richard Nixon and
former California governor Earl Warren.
The Friends of the Museum wrote a grant proposal to the Daughters of the American Revolution
and received grant approval. The grant will provide the Museum with the opportunity to purchase
a touch screen kiosk for the Arcadia Veterans Local History Room and to digitize the current paper
collection. The current registries are in a 3-ring binder and are not currently digitized or preserved
4
in any other manner. By providing a digital kiosk, the public can more easily search for local
Arcadia veterans and will better preserve the original paper documents as primary source
materials.
VOLUNTEERS
The Museum Education Coordinator, Brittani Alberto, was able to grow
the number of volunteers this summer. There were approximately 16 teen
volunteers from Arcadia High School, five college volunteers, and two
adult volunteers. The Summer Volunteer Appreciation Brunch took place
on August 3 where all volunteers, the Friends of the Museum, and the
Museum Commission were invited to attend. Food was catered from
Mimi’s Café and Starbucks provided a donation of coffee to the Museum.
The teen volunteers were presented with reusable water bottles with their
names on them as a token of appreciation for all their hard work. The
adult volunteers were gifted excavation kits that were created and
distributed during the Summer Enrichment Program.
Longtime volunteer Jack McCrea was on vacation in the summer but will begin to regularly come
into the Museum weekly to work on the photography collections in the fall.
Volunteer hours:
June 10- August 27: 622 hours
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Both the Curator and Museum Education Coordinator, Stevy and Brittani,
have attended several events in the community this summer. The Curator
attended the Arcadia Lions Club meeting on July 11 to promote the
Museum’s upcoming events, including the Friends of the Museum “Faces of
Arcadia” fundraiser. While at the meeting, Stevy was presented a donation
of $250 for the Museum’s programs.
The Curator and the Education Coordinator also attended the Arcadia Police
National Night Out on August 6. At the event, Stevy and Brittani were able
to talk to some of the staff at the Police Department and learn more about
what they do. This also gave staff a glimpse into the type of exhibit that could potentially feature
the past and present history of the department in future.
Staff attended the San Gabriel Valley Veteran’s Health Clinic grand opening on August 23. Stevy
and Brittani were able to see the new facility and had the opportunity to talk to some of the
Veteran’s at the event. The Curator and Director will be contacting the clinic once again and inform
them about some upcoming opportunities for collaboration projects with the Vets, including a
recently obtained Veteran’s Connect grant, funded by the U.S. Institute of Library and Museum
Services and partnered with the California State Library and Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
TRAINING
Both Curator and Museum Education Coordinator, Stevy and Brittani, attended
“An Afternoon for Teachers” workshop on Sunday, July 21 at the Norton Simon
Museum. Stevy and Brittani attended two tours: Women Artists and
Mindfulness Activity. In the Women Artist tour, they learned how to interpret
artwork and sculptures as guests. In the Mindfulness Activity, Stevy and
Brittani engaged in a conversation with other participants around the essence
of Brancusi’s Bird in Space sculpture and then went to the gardens where they
created sculptures out of Crayola air-dry clay. The workshop also gave them
the opportunity to see what types of curriculum other museums are creating
5
for K-12 students, what adult programs are offered, and what family and youth programs could
be brought to the Gilb Museum.
FUNDRAISING
The Friends of the Museum have been working extremely hard on their upcoming community
fundraiser for the Museum. It is titled “Faces of Arcadia” and will include cultural demonstrations,
behind the scenes tours of the Museum and its collections, as well as a sit-down dinner,
entertainment, and a silent auction. Everyone is invited. Tickets are $80 per person and the event
is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 2019.
FACILITIES
The front lobby of the Museum and the Museum Education Center were
refreshed with a new coat of paint.
