SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Angie Slemaker called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Slemaker
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Donna Salter,
Angie Slemaker, Edith Slemmon
ABSENT: William Gleason and Dorothy Wadley
A motion was made by Commissioner Slemmon, seconded by Commissioner Martinez and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Gleason and Wadley.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Commissioner Martinez made a motion to nominate Commissioner Slemaker as Chairperson,
seconded by Commissioner Leung. Commissioner Slemaker accepted the nomination and the
motion carried unanimously. Commissioner Slemaker made a motion to nominate
Commissioner Salter as Vice-Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Martinez.
Commissioner Salter accepted the nomination and the motion carried unanimously.

PUBLIC COMMENTS
Judy Lu from Girl Scout Troop 181 attended the meeting for her Communications Merit Badge.
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Leung reported there recently was a shortage of food for patrons during the
lunch program. Assistant Recreation and Community Services Director (ARCSD) Candice
Cheung said when this happens, the patron will receive a voucher for a free meal. ARCSD
Cheung will also report back to the vendor.
Commissioner Slemmon reported the Bargain Box is doing great, good quality items are
donated and encourages everyone to stop by. The Bargain Box is open for business from 10am
to 3pm Wednesday through Saturday.
Commissioner Mazone introduced herself and reported she has lived in the City of Arcadia for
60 years, has been a member of the Traveler's Club for ten years, and has been working as a
volunteer in the Traveler's Office for six years. Commissioner Mazone reported the Traveler's
took a day trip to Rancho Los Cerritos in Long Beach. Commissioner Mazone reported she will
be the escort on November 12 for a trip to Palm Springs where participants will experience a
guided tour of Frank Sinatra's estate. The next Traveler's meeting will be held on Friday, August
23 with guest speaker Tyler Reardon from Collette Tours.
Commissioner Wadley's report was presented by Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez.
The Friendship Club had an average of 25 members in July including one new member. The
Friendship Club meets on Wednesdays at 11am. Once per month members will celebrate
birthdays with cake and ice-cream and Bingo is held after each meeting. On August 21, the
Club will enjoy a western themed day.
Commissioner Martinez said he has a goal to motivate seniors to exercise or take an exercise
class. Commissioner Martinez said he will promote anything that can get people to live a better
healthy life.
Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. The Club averages up to 32
members per month including three new members who joined in July. The Golden Age Club
meets every Thursday at 11am at the Assistance League.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Tom Beck reported Measure A passed. Measure A is a local 3/4 cent sales tax
to maintain City services such as 9-1-1 emergency response times, home break-ins and thefts,
school and park police patrols, fire/paramedic services, and other City services.
Council Member Beck announced Taste of Arcadia will be held on September 23 at the
Arboretum from 5-9pm. Council Member Beck reported a buyer has purchased many properties
in Arcadia near Santa Anita and Huntington Drive. Some of the properties are; Denny's, the
parking lot behind Denny's, Bank of America building, Arroyo Pacific Academy, and many
others properties. Council Member Beck mentioned Le Meridien Hotel in Arcadia completion
date will be closer to 2021.

It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Salter, seconded by Commissioner Slemmon and carried on
roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a.

2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Report on Activities held in July 2019.
RS Hernandez reported on activities and events held in June and July: Jungle Bunco was held
on June 7 with 39 people in attendance. On June 14, 160 seniors attended the Summer Luau
held at the Arcadia Community Center. Participants enjoyed a traditional hula performance,
Hawaiian food, and raffle prizes. Coffee with the Mayor is doing great and had 39 people in
attendance in July. Coffee with the Mayor is held at the Community Center the first Tuesday of
each month at 9am. Mahjong players enjoy playing with Mayor Verlato who attends one Friday
per month. The Patriotic Luncheon was held in July 5, with 100 people in attendance. On July
23, 108 senior participants attended the Doheny Beach Trip for the day. The Community Center
held several seminars such as: Dementia, Home Care Options, Clean Power Alliance, and
Neurointerventional Treatments.
II. Report on Upcoming Activities for August 2019.
RS Hernandez reported on upcoming activities and events: Mahjong is held every Friday. Free
seminars on the Paramedic Program and Elder Abuse will be available in the month of August.
Mahjong with the Mayor will be held on August 16. Bunco and Beyond will be held on August 16
and the Evening of Music event will be held on August 23.
RS Hernandez reported there are many senior classes available at the Community Center
including Chair Yoga. RS Hernandez handed out a flyer with samples of different exercises a
person can do at home, at their desk, or on a chair. RS Hernandez asked everyone to hand
them out to their clubs and encourage people to exercise
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
ARCSD Cheung welcomed new Commissioner Marilyn Mazone. ARCSD reported the homeless
count was previously at 57 people. The County has updated the count analysis with a new total
of 77 homeless people. Arcadia has a higher concentration of homelessness in Downtown
Arcadia, the eastern side of Arcadia, and Peck Lake. ARCSD reported it is Arcadia's 116th
Birthday in August. The City will celebrate with cake at Concerts and Movies in the Park.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Slemaker adjourned the meeting at 4:52pm to September 5, 2019 at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
