SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Angie Slemaker called the meeting to order at 4:03pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: William Gleason, Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Marilyn Mazone,
Donna Salter, Angie Slemaker, and Edith Slemmon
ABSENT: Dorothy Wadley
A motion was made by Commissioner Martinez seconded by Vice -Chairperson Salter and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Wadley.

1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice -Chairperson Salter reported she attended the Pasadena Symphony & Pops Summer
Concert Series at the Los Angeles Arboretum and enjoyed it very much.
Commissioner Leung reported the lunch program is doing well and has not heard any
complaints about the soup being too salty.
Commissioner Martinez thanked Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez for sharing the
exercise flyers at the Community Center. Instructor Maria Sedlak had attended the lunch
program in August, and had the room participate in simple chair movements. Commissioner
Martinez said his goal to motivate seniors to exercise will continue and he encourages everyone
to continue promoting exercising at all senior clubs.
Commissioner Mazone reported the Travelers Club had guest speaker Tyler Reardon, from
Collette Tours at their monthly meeting in August. Tyler spoke about a trip to Italy and at the end
of the meeting there were eight members who signed up for that trip. Commissioner Mazone
reported the Travelers Club meets the fourth Friday of every month at 10am. Commissioner
Mazone reported there are many fun trips coming up including trips to Europe.Trips are
advertised in the monthly Connection Newsletter. Commissioner Mazone reported she will be
stopping by a few morning exercise classes to talk about the Travelers Club.
Commissioner Slemmon reported the Arcadia Historical Society Museum was started by Carol
Libby in the Recreation Conference Room many years ago. Commissioner Slemmon reported
there will be a silent auction dinner on Saturday, September 14, at the Arcadia Community
Center held by the Friends of the Arcadia Museum. Commissioner Slemmon reported the
Bargain Box will have their annual sale on Wednesday, November 6. The Bargain Box is open
Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Bargain Box is looking for volunteers. Chairperson
Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club is doing well. The Club had 140 people in August
including two new members. Chairperson Slemaker reported the club celebrates birthdays each
month and members play Bingo after every meeting. The Golden Age Club meets every
Thursday at 1 lam at the Assistance League.
Commissioner Wadley's report was presented by RS Hernandez. The Friendship Club meets
every Wednesday where members celebrate monthly birthdays, and play bingo after every
meeting. On August 21, the club had a Western Day and free lunch. On the last Wednesday of
the month, members bring a treat to be shared by all.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Regular meeting minutes of August 1, 2019.
Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved by Vice -Chairperson Salter, seconded by Commissioner Slemmon and carried on
roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 1.a.
AYES: Commissioners Leung, Martinez, Mazone, Salter, Slemaker, and Slemmon
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioner Wadley
ABSTAIN: Commissioners Gleason
3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Report on Activities held in August 2019.
RS Hernandez reported on activities and events held in August: Taste the Town took place on
Wednesday, August 7 where senior participants can enjoy lunch with a City Council Member.
On Thursday, August 15, the Community Center held a free seminar on the Paramedic
Program, presented by the Arcadia Fire Department. Bunco took place on Friday, August 16
where participants had an opportunity to win prizes. The Evening of Music Event took place on
August 23 with 130 guests who enjoyed a nice dinner, entertainment, and dancing. Coffee with
Mayor Verlato had 61 people in attendance in August. Mahjong with Mayor Verlato is very
popular and has up to 40 people in attendance each month.
Report on Upcoming Activities for September 2019.
RS Hernandez reported on activities and events coming in September: Coffee with the Mayor
will be held on Tuesday, September 3. A free pop-up seminar in collaboration with Metro on
older adult transportation will take place on Tuesday, September 10. Mahjong takes place every
Friday at 3pm and Mahjong with the Mayor will take place on Friday, September 13. The
"Wellness Rocks" Health Fair will be held on Friday, September 20, at the Community Center
from 8am to 1 pm. There will be free health screenings and informational booths.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
Director of Recreation and Community Services (DRCS) Sara Somogyi reported the 2019
Breeders Cup will be held at Santa Anita Park from Friday, November 1 through Saturday,
November 2. DRCS Somogyi reported the City of Arcadia in partnership with Downtown Arcadia
Improvement Association will hold the Annual Halloween Harvest Festival Event in Down Town
Arcadia on Thursday, October 31, from 3pm to 6pm. Parents and children can trick or treat at
participating locations in the area and finish at the Transit Plaza where everyone can enjoy
music, games, and a costume contest.
DRCS Somogyi reported City staff is currently working on preparing a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) and working on an agreement with the County of Los Angeles for a case
manager for homeless services in the City. The case manager office will be located at the
Arcadia Public Library and will work 2.5 days out of the week in Arcadia and the other half in the
City of South Pasadena.
DRCS Somogyi gave an update on the basketball courts at Eisenhower Park Improvement
Project. DRCS Somogyi and Public Works Director, Tom Tait provided the staff report and
options to the City Council. The Arcadia City Council approved a motion to bring back one
basketball court to Eisenhower Park.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Slemaker adjourned the meeting at 5:04pm to October 3, 2019 at 4:OOpm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
