HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 11/07/2019SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, November 7, 2019 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Angie Slemaker called the meeting to order at 4:OOpm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Wadley ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Anthony Leung, Ralph Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Donna Salter, Angie Slemaker, Edith Slemmon, Dorothy Wadley EXCUSED: William Gleason A motion was made by Commissioner Martinez seconded by Commissioner Wadley and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Gleason. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Wadley reported the Senior Friendship Club had pie, birthday celebrations, and a Halloween costume contest during the month of October. The Friendship Club meets every Wednesday at 11 am at the Assistance League. Commissioner Mazone reported the Travelers Club had 428 members in 2019 and 98 members have already signed up for 2020. The guest speaker on October 25 was Dave Allen from On Track. Commissioner Mazone reported on upcoming trips: Sinatra Estate Tour on November 12. Participants will experience a guided tour of Frank Sinatra's estate located in Palm Springs. Jackie Robinson on February 1, 2020. Participants will travel from Pasadena to Dodger Stadium. The Sweet Life on Coronado Island will take place on February 2 and includes a tour of Hotel Del Coronado. Commissioner Mazone reported she stopped by a few morning senior classes to promote the Travelers Club trips and has been successful with new members who have signed up. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League Bargain Box had their annual holiday sale and was very impressed how hard every volunteer works to make the sale event successful. Commissioner Slemmon reported she always has a good time working at the Annual Bargain Box Holiday sale. The entire store has holiday decor, games, clothes, and much more. Customers are standing in line early in the morning to shop for their holiday items. Commissioner Leung reported he has received both positive and negative feedback from seniors on the new senior meals service method. Effective November 5, the Arcadia Community Center implemented a new serving procedure during the lunch program. Doors open at 11:15am and lunch is served at each table. Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club had a Halloween Costume Contest on October 31 where participants had the opportunity to win prizes. The Golden Age Club will have a Thanksgiving lunch on November 21. Election of officers for 2020 will take place at the November 14 meeting. The Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11 am at the Assistance League. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Tom Beck reported he was invited to attend the Breeders' Cup on Friday, November 1. Council Member Beck reported former Mayor Mary Young passed away and funeral service will be held on Friday, November 22 at the San Marino Community Church. Council Member Beck said he would like to discuss election integrity at the next Council Meeting. Council Member Beck reported the Arboretum will hold its Annual Moonlight Festival starting November 9 through January 12 from 5:30pm to 10pm and encourages everyone to attend. Council Member Beck informed everyone the Pasadena Humane Society provided a study to find what the actual cost of services are that are provided to every city. The City of Arcadia will be charged a higher fee once the contract ends in 2020. Council Member Beck said the City is exploring banding together with other cities to provide service in the future together under one contract. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of October 3, 2019. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice -Chair Salter, seconded by Commissioner Slemmon and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 2.a. AYES: Commissioners Gleason, Leung, Martinez, Mazone, Salter, Slemaker, and Slemmon NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: Commissioner Wadley 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Report on Activities held in October 2019 Assistant Recreation and Community Services Director (ARCSD) Candice Cheung reported on Activities held in October. Coffee with the Mayor has become a popular monthly event. Mayor Verlato adds a special touch by baking home goods every month for those who attend. The Lions Sight program provides free exam and glasses for anyone who meets the requirements. The program is available by calling the Community Center to make an appointment. The annual Senior Day Camp took place on October 18 at Wilderness Park. This year's country and theme was Guatemala. Everyone enjoyed a full day of Guatemalan food, entertainment, arts and crafts, snacks, games, and much more. Seniors enjoyed the Boo Bash on Thursday, October 31 which included lunch, a costume contest, and raffle. ARCSD Cheung mentioned events would not be possible without the help of our senior volunteers. Report on Upcoming Activities for November 2019. ARCSD Cheung reported on upcoming activities. Free seminars are offered every month. On November 14, the Arcadia Police Department will be presenting on "Protecting Yourself From Scam Calls." On November 21, AARP will have a seminar on "Beware of Medicare Scams." The annual Thanksgiving Feast will be held on November 26. ARCSD Cheung invited Commissioners to the luncheon and asked to please rsvp with Bani Antonacci. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ARCSD Cheung reported the contracts for the Homeless Case Manager have been approved. The hiring process will begin once all contracts are signed. The Case Manager office will be located at the Arcadia Public Library. ARCSD Cheung clarified the grant does not include lunch vouchers. The grant will include motel vouchers as long as the individual meets the criteria through the coordinated entry system.
