HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 01/08/2020CALL TO ORDER — Chair Carlos Reza, Jr. called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m. in the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. ROLL CALL: Chair Carlos Reza, Jr.; Commissioners Jeanne Roy, Dale Carter, Billie Tone, Virginia Blitz; Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley; Curator Stevy Acevedo; Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS,/ LIAISONS Commissioner Tone reported that she recently visited the Monrovia Museum, which includes an exhibit on Natural History. The Museum had outstanding dioramas. Commissioner Tone suggested that the Museum Commission take a tour of the Museum. Friends of the Museum Liaison and Commissioner Blitz reported that she is doing the report for the DAR Grant, and that she wants a reception for the unveiling of the new Veterans Exhibit touchscreen. Director Reports Report from the Director of Libraries and Museums: Darlene Bradley reported on the Museum's participation in the Equestfest, which took place in Burbank and the collaboration with Margeaux Viera, descendant of Lucky Baldwin, and Pete Siberell of the Santa Anita Race Track. She also invited everyone to the Arcadia Historical Society mixer, which will take place in the The Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center on Friday, January 24. On Friday, February 21, there will be a Mayor's Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. The Library will serve as a voting center from Saturday, February 29 through Tuesday, March 3. The City will hold its annual Silver Circle event at the Community Center on March 12. Report from the Curator: Curator Acevedo updated the Commission with the exhibits that have been installed around the city, which included a collaboration with the Arcadia High School Band (AHS). This collaboration will lead to a joint exhibit about the AHS band in 2021. Recently the Museum took on a new intern, Jonathan Ornelas, who is doing an inventory of the collections space. Intern Lizbeth Sharon worked on the DAR grant project to digitize the Arcadia Veteran's Registry. The Museum is also digitizing the Fire Department scrapbooks, which will help to collaborate for the Community Heroes exhibit. Pop -Up Museum and Preschool programs have been well attended. The Museum also had several Scout Programs. The Museum also had a Dia de Los Muertos event, which was attended by over 50 people. Brittani, Education Coordinator, went to Hugo Reid Elementary for the first in -school program, where she presented items from the Native American history collection. The Museum is also in the process of applying for a Getty Internship Grant, which will bring two paid interns to the Museum — one for collections and one for education. On January 10, the Museum will be hosting a Coffee Talk, which will feature Lee Shimmin, who will be talking about the historical significance of the Arcadia's participation in the Rose Parade with former Rose Queen Leah Feelin Cullen. Stevy and Brittani will also be attending the California Association of Museums Conference from March 4-6. Brittani applied to attend the Huntington's Centennial Summit for Teachers from March 6-7. 1 Report from the Museum Education Coordinator: Education Coordinator Brittani showed the Museum Commission the magnets that were designed for the Museum. The Museum asks for a $1 suggested donation for magnets. Flyers/Announcements: Curator Stevy Acevedo presented flyers for Coffee talks, The Main Drag, Don't Go Breaking my Heart, and Arcadia Woman's Club. Consent Calendar a.
