DATE: September 15, 2020
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Darlene Bradley, Director of Library and Museum Services
SUBJECT: DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $5,000 FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE
MUSEUM AND THE HAKKA FOUNDATION FOR THE GILB MUSEUM
OF ARCADIA HERITAGE
Recommendation: Accept
SUMMARY
The Friends of the Museum and the Hakka Foundation would like to donate $5,000 to
the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage to further support its youth educational programs
that share the love of local Arcadia history with the community. It is recommended the
City Council accept this donation.
DISCUSSION
The Friends of the Museum is the non-profit support arm of the Museum and the Hakka
Foundation is a local Arcadia-based agency that has been very supportive of the Gilb
Museum of Arcadia Heritage as well as the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education
Center. This donation will help the Museum continue to develop and offer free Museum
quality educational programs and experiences to the youth of the community. This is
more important than ever since the pandemic has continued to keep the Museum doors
closed and staff look outward through contactless services and virtual programs to
connect with the community.
All gifts $1,000 or more are subject to approval by the City Council pursuant to City
Charter Section 809(d).
ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
The proposed action does not constitute a project under the California Environmental
Quality Act (“CEQA”), and it can be seen with certainty that it will have no impact on the
environment. Thus, this matter is exempt under CEQA.

FISCAL IMPACT
The Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage has a finite budget and the generous support of
the Friends of the Museum and the Hakka Foundation enables the Museum to offer
local history educational programs and experiences above and beyond the current level
of City funding. This additional money is especially needed this year, during an
economic downturn where the Museum’s programming budget was cut. This will allow
for the purchase of tactile educational materials and supplies that directly benefit the
youth of the community and bring awareness and interest in local history.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended the City Council accept a donation in the amount of $5,000 from the
Friends of the Museum and the Hakka Foundation for the Gilb Museum of Arcadia
Heritage.
