Subject: Soils Compaction Report for Swimming Pool Backfill
222 E. Magna Vista Ave., Arcadia, California
GYGC Project No.: GYGC-20-002
Gentlemen:
This report presents a summary of geotechnical engineering testing services provided by G.Y.
Geotech Consulting (GYGC) during the earthwork construction phase of the subject site.
PURPOSE OF FILL
The purpose of the earthwork was to Backfill of the Existing Swimming Pool at subject site. Based
on our field density testing and the laboratory testing results, it is our opinion that the fill placed
within the subject site can be classified as a non-structural fill and is expected to provide
adequate support for the anticipated development.
SUMMARY OF ROUGH GRADING EARTHWORK
Grading operations at the proposed area were performed during February 24 2020 to March 5
2020. The fill placed is considered adequate for the anticipated development and usage. No
adverse geotechnical conditions are known to exist that would preclude for the anticipated
development and usage. A backhole and bobcat were used to the grading operation, import olive
clayey sand (SC, Soil Type A) and olive silty sand with gravel (SM, Soil Type B) were used as fill
are considered adequate for the anticipated development and usage. Two holes (20"x20") were
cut at the bottom of old swimming pool. The competent soils were exposed. The top one foot
concrete were shattered and taken away from the North, East and West sides of old swimming
pool. All grading at the project site were completed and complies with Arcadia City Buildings and
Constructions Regulations and LA County.
Specific grading operations performed for the subject site included the following:
Fill Placement
1. Bottom inspection was performed, two holes (20"x20") were cut at the bottom of old swimming
pool. The competent soils were exposed.
2. The top one foot concrete were shattered and taken away from the North, East and-West side
of old swimming pool.
3. Fill of import olive clayey sand (SC, Soil Type A) and olive silty sand with gravel (SM, Soil Type
B) were placed in relatively thin lifts (8 inches), brought to near optimum moisture content, and
then compacted.
4. The approximate maximum depth of fill placed within the retaining wall and swimming pool
areas under the purview of this report is about 8.5 feet.
FIELD DENSITY TEST
1. Field density test was performed using the Sand Cone Method (ASTM D-1556-09). The field
density test results are presented in Table 2. Approximate locations of the test are shown on
the enclosed Site Plan (Figure 1 )
2. Field density tests were performed at random locations to check compaction effort provided
by the contractor. The test results exceeded minimum required relative compaction of 90
percent. The test results herein are considered representative of the compacted area.
3. The fill of import olive clayey sand (SC, Soil Type A) and olive silty sand with gravel (SM, Soil
Type B)were verified to match with the laboratory tested samples.
4. The compacted fill is considered adequate for its intended use.
LABORATORY TESTING
The laboratory maximum dry density and optimum moisture content for the onsite soils were
determined according to laboratory standard ASTM D-1557-09. The following table presents the
test result of representative soil samples.
TABLE 1
LABORATORY TEST RESULTS
1. Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content
Soil Type Maximum Dry Density Optimum Moisture
(pcf) Content(%)
Olive clayey sand (SC, Soil Type A)/ 128.5 9.5
Import
Olive silty sand with gravel (SM, Soil
Type B)/ Import 133.0 8.0
2. Corrosion'Potential
Chemical laboratory tests were recommended on the filled soils to aid in evaluation of soils
corrosion potential and the attack on concrete by sulfate soils.
3. Expansion Potential
Due to the filled soils were clayey sand and silty sand, Expansion potential is expected to be low.
However, expansion index laboratory tests were recommended to aid in evaluation expansion
potential.
POST-GRADING RECOMMENDATION
1. All utility backfill should be brought to near optimum moisture content and then compacted to
obtain a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent of the laboratory standard.
2. All trench excavations should conform to CAL-OSHA and local safety codes.
111 STATEMENT
Based on our field density testing results and grading observation, it is our opinion that the
completed grading will be safe against hazard from landslide, settlement, or slippage and the
completed grading will have no adverse affect on the adjacent properties.
FILL CONDITION
Based on our field and laboratory test results, it is our opinion that the fill placed within the
swimming pool can be classified as primary structural fill and,are considered adequate to provide
the support for the proposed development.
REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
This report presents information and data relative to the grading and placement of compacted fill
at the subject site. Representative(s) of this firm conducted periodic tests during the progress of
the compaction in an effort to determine whether compliance with the City of Arcadia's grading
specifications was being obtained. The presence of our personnel during the work progress did
not involve any direct supervision of the contractor or his work forces and does not relieve the
contractor of the primary responsibility to perform all work in accordance with the project
specifications and the City's Buildings and Constructions Regulations. Completed work under the
purview of this report is considered suitable and adequate for the intended use from a
geotechnical point of view.
This opportunity to be of service is appreciated. If you should have any questions, please call the
undersigned.
