Box 60021 Arcadia, CA 91007 FROM: Michael Crane Arbor Care,Inc. SUBJECT: 1060 Fallen Leaf Rd.: Arborist's Examination of raised grade near Protected Oak. A play area was recently built in the back yard and the grade was raised within the dripline of a Coast Live Oak to create a level surface. I made a site visit to examine the completed project. The design adequately accommodates the tree and it appears that no damage was done to it in the process of the work. The encroachment and grade fill will not have an adverse effect on the tree and it will continue to thrive in the landscape in my professional opinion. The play area was built by creating a flat grade by installing a three-foot tall stacked block garden/retaining wall. The wall contours around the north side of the trunk,remaining at least three feet away from the trunk that measures 16 inches in diameter at standard height. A concrete slab was poured on the raised and level grade,which is located as close as ten feet from the trunk. No irrigation or additional plant material was or is planned to be installed on the perimeter of the play area or anywhere near the tree. The grade was raised in approximately 50% of the total rootzone and less than 10% of the rootzone has been covered by the play surface. The root crown and buttress area is at natural grade and is properly exposed. The drainage from the play area runs-off towards the tree,where it can easily percolate into the rootzone,which is beneficial during seasonal rains. The fill soil was not compacted and it is conducive for root growth. I expect a mass of feeder roots to reestablish in the upper portion of the fill within two years,and the tree should have a sufficient amount of rootmass to support itself until the rootmass is fully restored. No pruning of the live crown is required,but I have recommended that a branch removal is don at some time in the future for load reduction and utility line clearance. I have attached photos that help illustrate my observations and findings.
