SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Angie Slemaker called the meeting to order at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Salter
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Ralph Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Donna Salter, Angie Slemaker,
Edith Slemmon, Dorothy Wadley
EXCUSED: William Gleason and Anthony Leung
A motion was made by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Wadley and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Gleason.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Mazone reported Travelers Club member, Martin Roden, passed away in
February and another special member, Dennis Ross is not doing well and currently hospitalized.
Commissioner Mazone reported 79 people attended the Travelers Club general meeting on
February 28. Commissioner Mazone reported on upcoming trips: "Inside the Walt Disney
Archives" will take place on April 17. Members will enjoy a docent -led tour of a special Disney
exhibit and a stop to Castle Peak, a miniature Disneyland in the backyard of Architect, Dave
Sheegog. "Cooking on Campus" will take place on April 22, where participants will enjoy a
guided tour of the. Kellogg home: "That's Amore" will take place on April 30 and participants will
enjoy a day visiting historical places developed in Los Angeles. Commissioner Mazone
mentioned there is a San Gabriel Valley Veterans Affair Community Outpatient Clinic in Arcadia
on Foothill Blvd.
Commissioner Wadley reported the Senior Friendship Club is still inviting new members to join
their club. The Senior Friendship Club members enjoyed pie day, birthdays, Valentine's Day,
and happy hour'of homemade treats during the month of February. On March 11, the Friendship
Club will have a Saint Patrick's Day lunch..
Commissioner Slemmon reported the Bargain Box is receiving many decorations and beautiful
donations. Commissioner Slemmon reported there is a free crib available in the patio of the
Bargain Box.
Commissioner Salter reported she attended the Annual Mayor's Community Breakfast and
enjoyed the guest speaker presentation. Commissioner Salter continues to volunteer in the
kitchen when she can.
Chairperson Slemaker reported the Golden Age Club has approximately 20 people each week.
Chairperson Slemaker is excited about their St. Patrick's Day luncheon on March 19. The
Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at 11 am at the Assistance League.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Tom Beck reported School Board Elections took place on March 3 and City
Elections are coming up for City Council Members for Districts 1 and 4. Ballots for the election
must be postmarked by Tuesday, April 14, 2020. Council Member Beck reported there is
discussion about the Silver Circle Dinner possibly being canceled. Council Member Beck
reported the Anita Baldwin Statue has been approved and the City must receive the money for it
before they can start the process. The statue will be located on the corner of Santa Clara Street
and Huntington Drive. Council Member Beck reported the Meridien Hotel ribbon cutting
ceremony will take place in February 2021

Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved by Commissioner Slemmon, seconded by Commissioner Martinez and carried on
roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 2.a.
AYES: Commissioners Martinez, Mazone, Salter, Slemaker, Slemmon, and Wadley
NOES: None
ABSENT: Commissioners Gleason and Leung
ABSTAIN: None
3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Report on Activities held in January 2020
Senior Citizen Commissioners received copies of the three community nominations for the 2020
Senior of the Year. After careful consideration, and a vote, Assistant Director of Recreation and
Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung announced the honoree, June Colman as the
2020 Senior of the Year. Family members of June Colman will be invited to the Senior Rotary
Luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, May 12. The luncheon will take place at the Arcadia
Community Center. June Colman's guest, Senior Citizen Chairperson, and City Staff will also be
invited to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the Los Angeles County Senior of the Year
Luncheon.
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported on Tuesday, February 25, Senior
Services hosted the Annual Billiards Tournament. Yuri Cortes won first place in the tournament.
RS Hernandez reported on February events. Sweetheart Bunco was held on February 14 with
52 participants. AARP Tax Aide Volunteers assisted 305 seniors with income tax filing. Tax
assistance is free to seniors 50 years of age and older. Coffee with the Mayor was held on
February 3 with 76 people in attendance.
Report on Upcoming Activities for March 2020.
RS Hernandez reported Coffee with the Mayor was held on March 3. The last Coffee with the
Mayor with Mayor Verlato will be held on April 7. A free seminar will be held on March 19
regarding Income Qualified Programs & Electrical Safety and on March 24 a free seminar will be
held regarding Psoriatic Arthritis and Psoriasis. On March 31, tickets will go on sale for the
Cinco De Mayo Luncheon, Rotary Salute to Seniors Luncheon, and Spring Into Bingo. Taste the
Town will be held on March 12 where participants will enjoy lunch at Dashiwa Ramen.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
ARCSD Cheung followed up with last month's report regarding two senior lunch times. At this
time the Community Center Department has decided to ask all lunch participants to fill out a
survey on how they feel about having two lunch times and two different lunch options, American
food and Chinese food. ARCSD Cheung reported that due to the Coronavirus, many
participants have not been showing up for lunch, therefore the amount of meals sold have
decreased. Council Member Tom Beck suggested to hold off on the survey until everything
settles down and things are back to normal.
ARCSD Cheung reminded everyone the City's Homeless Case Manager, Mari Rodriguez is
available for Arcadia and South Pasadena. Mari's office is located in the Arcadia Public Library
where she can be reached on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 1 pm at: 626.628.6495
and by email at mrodriguez@unionstationhs.org.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Slemaker adjourned the meeting at 5:02pm to April 2, 2020 at 4:00pm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
