The Community Collections Virtual Exhibit is now live and available for the community to see. EXHIBITS The Gilb Museum asked members of the Arcadia community to share images of what they like to collect. These images will be showcased in this year's first ever Community Collections Virtual Exhibit. Curator Acevedo is creating the exhibit using Artsteps, a free web-based environment that allows its members to create virtual art galleries in lifelike 3D spaces. The virtual launch of the exhibit will be on March 1. The virtual exhibit can be found on the Museum’s website: www.arcadiaca.gov/Museum. Museum staff continues to update the majority of permanent exhibits in the main gallery and has begun installing items into the Arcadia in the Movies exhibit. Shows such as Fantasy Island have been included with props for guests to see. The exhibit will also highlight props such as a horse mask from the TV show Luck that was filmed at the Santa Anita Racetrack in 2013. COLLECTIONS Staff continues to upload and accession items from the Museum’s collection onto CatalogIt. The Curator is working with the Museum’s photography collection to be added in CatalogIt. Curator Acevedo is currently photographing some of the Anthony Wilkinson Collection letters and postcards. These letters are then uploaded to FromThePage for volunteers to help staff transcribe them. https://fromthepage.com/gilbmuseum/anthony-w-wilkinson-letter-collection Volunteer and former intern Rebecca Anderson continues to assist the Museum virtually. Ms. Andersen is currently assisting Curator Acevedo with the California Revealed Digital Grant nomination of the Arcadia Woman’s Club Collection. The collection will be available on the California State Library’s database to reach a larger audience and inform them of the unique Arcadia Women’s Club collection housed at the Gilb Museum. This will be valuable information for someone looking at Women’s Clubs locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally. 2 An inventory of all items donated during this time:  Leah Sloan donated her grandfather's panorama photograph when stationed at Camp Santa Anita during World War II. Both her grandfather and uncle are in the photo.  Anne Joseph donated three plates from the Los Angeles Arboretum, highlighting the Hugo Reid Adobe, Queen Anne Cottage, and the Coach Barn. She also donated a Westerner Hotel hanger.  William Mitchell Jr. donated the Arcadia Police and Firemen Relief Association Annual Souvenir Book from 1927. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto continues to provide monthly kits to the community. There are two types of kits: Educational Kits for children aged 5-12 and Preschool Kits for children aged 5 and under. The Gilb Museum offered the History at Home and the Wild West Kits to the community, and, to date, has distributed about 200 kits in just 2021 so far. In conjunction with the Educational and Preschool Kits, Ms. Alberto scheduled a Girl Scout Program every month with Daisy troop 71181. This troop is made up of seven Arcadia- area Scouts, ages 5-7. Although there were no requests for the public Speakers Bureau in January or February, the Museum was asked by the Arcadia Senior Services Department at the Community Center if the two organizations could partner on providing a monthly presentation to Seniors beginning in April. The Museum’s Speakers Bureau speakers, Dale Carter will give a talk on the Santa Anita Depot in April and Laura Henneforth will present her Famous Arcadians talk in May,. The Museum Education Coordinator led four virtual school programs with each third grade class at Hugo Reid Elementary. The program was called Then vs. Now and looked at the differences between the past and the present. Objects and photographs from the Museum’s collection were used in the lesson. Ms. Alberto was able to conduct the program while Ms. Acevedo and intern Hanita Le monitored the chat. Curator Acevedo has been asked to do a presentation for the Arcadia Coordinating Council on March 1 to discuss the Gilb Museum and the impact it has had on the community in promoting the history of the City of Arcadia. ADMINISTRATION The Friends of the Arcadia Museum met virtually through Zoom on January 7. The meeting for February was cancelled and will resume in March. The Friends of the Museum started their membership drive in January and will update the Board in March of their current progress. Curator Acevedo submitted the Cataloging California Grant to the California State Library to help fund a paid internship to work on the Anthony Wilkinson Collection. This grant will help with the inventory, digitization and curation of the collection. Curator Acevedo submitted the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Grant application and applied for two internships for the Gilb Museum: a Curation and Collections internship and an Education and Marketing internship. The Museum will be notified if the grant is awarded by April. 3 Gilb Museum staff was awarded the Arcadia Council PTA Honorary Service Award which was presented on March 2, 2021. The committee was extremely impressed by the commitment of the Museum to continue to provide programs for the youth and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. MARKETING Due to the closure of the building to the public, staff continues to be active online with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. These platforms provide an opportunity for the community to still be engaged with the Museum. #TriviaTuesday and #FeatureFriday have been very popular which has led to an increase in engagement on all social media platforms. On Saturday, February 13, the Museum shared multiple posts for #GlobalMovieDay. Teen volunteer Max Briggs helped create the posts about movies filmed in Arcadia made to look like locations from around the world. One example is Tarzan Escapes from 1936 which is one of the most iconic movies filmed in Arcadia. A Curator’s Corner video was created for the anniversary of the Day of Remembrance on February 19 when Executive Order 9066 was executed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt which forced Japanese Americans to be sent to assembly centers and internment camps in the United States. The video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/U16Ww6uEJeM. VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS Angela Song reached out to the Museum in December 2020 for the opportunity to do a virtual internship at the Museum, commencing in January 2021. Ms. Song’s interests lie in grant writing and collections. Curator Acevedo has been working with Ms. Song on future grants that the Museum can apply to fund internships, promote programs, and to purchase essential curatorial supplies for the collection. Hanita Le was hired as the Gilb Museum’s Museum Education Intern in January 2021. Ms. Le is interested in being an educator after graduation. She is currently helping Ms. Alberto create lesson plans for educational programming, design kits for preschoolers, and is helping to conduct Girl Scout programming. Volunteer hours: January 1- February 19: 171.62 hours FACILITIES Staff continues to monitor the climate in the collections room, as well as the exhibit space. Public Works assisted the Museum in painting the exhibit walls for staff to install items soon.
