California Residential Code (CRC) and California Health and Safety Code Section 13113.7.
For dwellings or sleeping units containing fuel burning appliances or having attached

area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, and on each additional story of the
dwelling, including basements as required by Section R315 of the of the 2016 California
Residential Code (CRC).
Multi-purpose alarms (combination carbon monoxide and smoke alarms) may be used.
All alarms shall comply with requirements for listing and approval by the Office of the State Fire

Gentlemen:
Per request, MTC Engineering, Inc. (MTC) has performed grading observations and soils density
tests for backfilling the swimming pool at the referenced site. The compacted fill was certified by a
representative of MTC as non-structural fill, which is not used for supporting any structures, in
accordance with the recommendations of MTC, project specifications, and the City grading
ordinances.
SITE CONDITIONS AND PURPOSE OF GRADING
The subject property is located at 426 Alster Avenue Arcadia CA 91006. The purpose of the grading
is to backfill the existing swimming pool. The pool was approximately 4.0 to 8.5 feet in depth, near
rectangular in shape, and approximately 14.5 and 32 feet for the short and long axis, respectively
(see Figure 1). Two 2'x 2' square holes were punched through the pool bottom, which were
observed and approved by a representative of MTC and the City inspector according to Mr. Great
Lee. The depths of the compacted fills are 4 to 8.5 feet. The grading limits and compaction test
locations for backfilling the swimming pool are shown on Figure 1.
GRADING PROCEDURES
In general,the grading was performed as follows:
a) Two 2'x 2' square holes were punched at both ends of the pool bottom.
b) Jumping Jack Compactor and water hose were utilized for watering, backfilling, and
compacting. Import silty and sandy clay was used as compacted fills; and all fill soils were
spread in 6 to 8-inch lift, moistened to near the optimum moisture content, compacted, and
tested in not more than two-foot interval to the finished grades.

SPECIFICATIONS AND TEST RESULTS
The soils used for compacted fills are classified and tabulated in Table 1. The specified minimum
degree of compaction is 90 percent of the maximum dry density, as determined by the latest version
of the ASTM D1557. The import soils are suitable for the project and approved by a representative
of MTC. Field density tests were performed in accordance with the latest version of the ASTM
D1556 (sand cone, minimum 10% of total tests) and the ASTM D 6938 (nuclear gauge). The field
moisture contents were performed in accordance with the latest version of the ASTM D4959 or
D6938. The test results are tabulated in Table 2. The test locations are shown on Figure 1, attached.
As indicated in Table 2, SC represents the Sand Cone test; and NG represents the Nuclear Gauge
test. Wherever field density tests failed, the soils were scarified, re-mixed to near optimum moisture,
and re-compacted to obtain the required density.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The compacted fills reported herein have been properly placed and compacted for non-structural
fill, which is not for supporting any structures, at the site. The work inspected and approved by a
representative of MTC is in accordance with the recommendations of MTC, applicable provisions of
the City Building Code and the current California Building Code.
The grading observations, testing, and recommendations for the project are summarized as follows:
• The observation and test results indicate that the backfilled soils were properly compacted in
accordance with project specifications, recommendations of MTC, and the City grading
ordinances.
• Final grading should provide a positive drainage to divert surface water away from the
foundation areas of the existing building in compliance with the local jurisdiction's grading
requirements. All pad drainage should be collected and diverted away from the existing building
in non-erosive devices.
This report pertains only to the grading as described herein and is subject to be reviewed byRtheOFESSIp
controlling authorities for this project.
