HIGHLIGHTS
The Museum continues to be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but is still active virtually
with the community. The Museum was awarded the Honorary Service Award from the Arcadia
Unified School District Parent Teacher Association in March.
EXHIBITS
Curator Stevy Acevedo has finished updating the permanent exhibits in the
main gallery with new artifacts and exhibit labels. This exhibit space includes
the history of Arcadia from the early inhabitants of Arcadia to the 1984
Summer Olympics. Public Works assisted the Museum with the installation of
new iPad mounts in the exhibit space, including the Santa Anita Ranchers
and Ross Balloon School exhibits, as well as a new kiosk in the Santa Anita
Japanese Assembly Center.
Curator Acevedo has also updated the Arcadia in the Movies exhibit. The
exhibit has several movie and television show posters on display, as well as
some movie props in the collection. Items include the vest of the character
Tattoo from Fantasy Island and props from the television show Luck. The
television in this section of the exhibit will also display over 150 movies and
television shows filmed in the City of Arcadia.
The Curator also updated the Women of Arcadia exhibit that used to only
highlight past Mayor, Floretta K. Lauber. This updated exhibit will highlight
past and present women that have made a difference in the community of
Arcadia. Some of those individuals include Anita Baldwin, Clara Baldwin
Stocker, Carol Libby, Mary Young, Mary Ball, and many more.
Curator Acevedo was asked by Girl Scout Kira Camacho in early 2020 to
be her Project Advisor for her Gold Award. Ms. Camacho created the Senior Series Project,
collecting oral histories from residents in the City of Arcadia. Having to modify her original plans
of creating a physical exhibit, Ms. Camacho created a virtual exhibit of her project. The virtual
2
launch of the exhibit is now live and you can find the virtual exhibit link on the Museum’s website:
www.arcadiaca.gov/Museum
COLLECTIONS
Curator Acevedo continues to photograph the Anthony W. Wilkinson
Collection letters and postcards since they are too fragile to scan. These
letters are then uploaded to FromThePage where virtual volunteers help
Museum staff transcribe them. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum has
generously provided funds for a 6-month subscription to FromThePage for
more pages to be uploaded and transcribed by the public. Since the
beginning of this project in January 2021, there have been 313 pages
transcribed from 43 collaborators and 1,919 hours and 33 minutes dedicated
to the transcription of these letters and postcards.

An inventory of items donated during this time period:
Ms. Nguyen Tran donated 16 local restaurant menus from the City of Arcadia.
Ms. Darlene Besocke donated three scrapbooks on behalf of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, Santa Anita Chapter. The scrapbooks cover the group's history from 2014-2015,
2016-2017, and 2018. These are to be included in the Museums’ current Daughters of the
American Revolution Santa Anita Chapter Collection, donated in 2017.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto held 16 school
programs with 3rd grade classes from Holly Avenue Elementary,
Hugo Reid Elementary, and Camino Grove Elementary, including
one special needs class. Ms. Alberto has presented both Then
vs. Now and Tongva Time school programs to these classes.
Then vs. Now challenges students to think about how the past is
different from the present, using photographs and artifacts from
the Museum’s collection. Tongva Time requires students to follow
along with the lesson to make Tongva English dictionaries.
Because of virtual school programming and the pandemic, the
Museum has had 422 virtual “visitors” to the Museum, many more than a traditional school year,
due to the cost of buses.
The Gilb Museum has continued to provide free educational kits every month for
the year 2021. For the month of March, the Museum offered the Horses of Courses
Kit and had 108 requests. In April, the Museum offered the Peacockle-Doodle-Doo
Kit and has had 98 requested so far. Each kit is designed by Ms. Alberto and her
educational intern Hanita Le, which includes a short lesson and historical
photographs from the Museum’s archive.
The Museum also had local Girl Scout Pearl Wong assist in preparing kits for the
Museum’s May and June Plantastic kits, which will have soil and pumpkin seeds for
children to plant.
Ms. Alberto scheduled a Girl Scout Program with Daisy Troop 71181 on March 29. This troop is
made up of seven Arcadia-area Scouts ages 5-7, and will have a monthly program with Ms.
Alberto in July.
3
On March 13, the Museum had its first Virtual Transcribe-a-thon for
the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection of letters and postcards. The event
was successful with the participation of 16 attendees in transcribing
over 50 pages of letters and postcards in the collection. The Museum
has dedicated a page to this project on the Museum’s website for others
who would like to assist with the project. The next Transcribe-a-thon
event will take place on June 12.
The Museum had its first Virtual Trivia Night on April 3. The topic of the event was Lucky Baldwin
in honor of his 193rd birthday. Arcadia Unified School District Teacher Kimberly Smith and Dale
Carter won first place. They both came to the Museum to pick up their prizes, which included
custom Gilb Museum face masks.
The Senior Services Department at the Community Center has asked the
Museum to participate in a partnership with them in providing a monthly
presentation to Arcadia Senior Services patrons. Dale Carter presented on
Santa Anita Depot on April 9 and had 21 participants in attendance. Laura
Henneforth will present on Famous Arcadians on May 14.
LA Metro has requested the Museum staff do a presentation to their seniors about the Gilb
Museum and the history of Arcadia. This program will take place on May 6 and will be promoted
to the five regions within the Greater Los Angeles Area. (San Gabriel Valley, Gateway Cities,
West Side Central, South Bay Communities, and San Fernando Valley).
ADMINISTRATION
Curator Acevedo was awarded the Cataloging California Grant from the California State Library
to help fund a paid internship to work on the Anthony Wilkinson Collection. This grant will help the
collection be inventoried, digitized and curated. The Museum is currently in the process of hiring.
Rebecca Andersen to assist with this project.
Museum staff were notified that the Museum was also awarded the Getty Marrow Multicultural
Undergraduate Internship Grant for two internships at the Gilb Museum: a Curation and
Collections internship and an Education and Marketing internship. The Museum has begun
to promote the Internships on Handshake, and the Museum’s website and social media platforms.
The internships are full-time (40 hours/week) for a consecutive ten-week work period beginning
June 7, 2021 and ending August 27, 2021. Curator Acevedo and Museum Education Coordinator
Alberto have attended two Supervisor Orientations required by the Getty during the month of April.
Curator Acevedo recently applied to the Southwest Oral History Association mini grant to help
fund equipment to conduct more oral histories at the Museum. Angela Song, virtual intern,
assisted in writing the grant. Although the review board was very impressed with
the Museum’s application, there were many more applicants that need funding,
and the Museum was not chosen. The review board encouraged the Museum to
try again next year as they liked the proposal.
The Gilb Museum staff has been awarded the Arcadia Council PTA Honorary
Service Award. The committee was extremely impressed by the commitment of
the Museum to continue to provide programs for the youth and community since
COVID-19 struck in March of 2020. They were presented the award at the March PTA meeting
with an introduction done by Library and Museum Director, Darlene Bradley.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum conducted their board meetings on March 4 and April 1 by
Zoom. The Friends of the Museum were very successful with their membership drive. They have
a total of 56 members and three of them are new Life Members. The Friends of the Arcadia
Museum continue to support programs and projects at the Museum and have provided funds
4
for a 6-month subscription to FromThePage. The Friends also had a plaque created to display
the Lifetime Members at the Museum, near the Donor Tree and entrance of the Museum.
MARKETING
Due to the closure to the public, Ms. Alberto continues to be active online by posting on the
Museum’s various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
YouTube. In doing so, the Museum is still able to be engaged with the community and grow its
audience.
In February 2021, the Museum began publishing a monthly e-newsletter for its subscribers
through Mailchimp. The Museum can promote its virtual programs and exhibits, as well as future
events. Community members can subscribe to the e-newsletter on the Museum’s website main
page.
VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS
The Gilb Museum has begun recruiting new volunteers and has received applications for six new
volunteers, two adult and four teen applicants, since making this opportunity available to
community members. Since volunteers have not been allowed to volunteer in-person, they have
been helping by completing virtual projects, such as the transcription of the Anthony W. Wilkinson
collection, compiling kit statistics, and attending bi-monthly volunteer meetings.
Angela Song continues to assist the Curator with grant writing during her virtual internship. They
continue to work on future grants that the Museum can apply for funding internships, promoting
programs, and to purchase essential curatorial supplies for the collection.
Hanita Le, the Museum’s virtual Education Intern, continues to help Ms. Alberto create lesson
plans for educational programming, design kits for preschoolers, and is helping to conduct Girl
Scout programming. She is currently helping Ms. Alberto create the lesson plans for the Summer
Enrichment Program.
Museum Staff has created a new teen internship for the “Faces of Arcadia” Oral History
Project. This internship will give the current teen volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills
and assist in collecting oral histories from the Arcadia community. The Museum currently has nine
teen interns who are part of this project. Staff is conducting several workshops and meetings to
prepare the interns to begin the project. Curator Acevedo is currently contacting local civic groups
that might be interested in the project, including the Arcadia Chinese Association.
Volunteer hours:
March 1- April 19: 391.51 hours
FACILITIES
Staff continues to monitor the climate, particularly the high humidity, in the collections room as
well as the exhibit space.
Public Works has assisted the Museum in installing new iPad mounts to the exhibit spaces. They
also assisted the Museum in power washing the patio area at the Museum.
