PROCLAMATIOR
IYEEREAS, in 1978 a joint congressional resolution established Asian American and
Pacific Islander Heritage Week to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the
United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the
transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, with the majority of workers being Chinese
immigrants; and
1YI$R$AS, in 1992, Congress expanded the observance to a monthlong celebration
that is now known as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and seeks to
honor and recognize the contributions that generations of Asian American and Pacific
Islanders have made to American history, society, and culture; and
191WIRRAS, the theme of this year's Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage
Month is "Advancing Leaders Through Purpose -Driven Service'; and
WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander men and women are leaders in all
aspects of American life; government and industry, science and medicine, the arts and Armed
Forces, education and sports; and
WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander entrepreneurs strengthen our
economy and our communities through their dedication and ingenuity, inspiring the next
generation of American innovation by example; and
WRER$AS, through Asian American and Pacific Islanders' love of family,
community, and hard work, they have helped to uphold the founding principles of our nation
for generations.
NOW, THEWORR, I, She Tay, Mayor of the City of Arcadia, do hereby proclaim the
month of May 2021 ash ASIAN VAN AM
PACIFIC ISLANDER EIEWIAGE MOM
and encourage everyone to join in honoring our Asian American and Pacific Islander
community members for their many accomplishments and contributions, as we celebrate their
cultural richness, diversity, and generosity, and acknowledge the importance of inclusion to
building a brighter future for all.
