HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 01/07/21SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, January 7, 2021 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:07pm via Zoom. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Salter ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Charlene Martinez, Ralph Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter EXCUSED: Kathrynn Penny A motion was made by Chairperson Salter seconded by Vice-Chairperson Mazone and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Penny. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung reported there is a correction on the Agenda dated January 7, 2021. Under Adjournment, it states: The Senior Citizen Commission will adjourn this meeting to April 1, 2021 at 4:00pm in the Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia. The correct information should have stated the meeting will be virtual through Zoom. The second correction is under the Staff Report dated January 7, 2021. It states 56 in attendance under Virtual Presentations. The correct number of attendees was 52. 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Salazar, representative of the Golden Age Club said he is doing well and is hoping COVID-19 will end soon in order to be able to go outdoors. He hopes things will get back to normal days so he can make future plans. Commissioner R. Martinez, Member at Large, is doing well and is requesting vaccination information be communicated as soon as the information is available. Commissioner C. Martinez, representative of the Assistance League reported the Arcadia Realtor Board donated a generous amount of money to the Assistance League. An artist donated a picture worth over $4,000. Commissioner C. Martinez reported Operation School Bell continues to serve the community by donating Old Navy gift cards to students to shop for clothes. Operation School Bell also donated $100 gift cards to families. For the new year, they are giving away 462 Staples gifts cards to schoolteachers and staff, including a personal note of encouragement for each person. Commissioner C. Martinez reported the Bargain Box is planning to open in February. Donations will be accepted at that time. Chairperson Salter was happy to report she was the lucky iPad winner for the Silver Circle drawing. Chairperson Salter reported Waste Management is no longer calling residents regarding late trash pick-up. She hopes they will do so in the future. Vice-Chairperson Mazone, representative of the Travelers Club reported the Travelers Club continues to have virtual meetings. All trips have been canceled at this time, however there are two trips lined up for 2021. The first one is scheduled on May 23, 2021 to the Pantages Theater. The second trip is scheduled for July 22, 2021 to the Hilton Hotel for a Neil Diamond Tribute. Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported a total of 245 membership fees were waived for 2021. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Tom Beck reported that Waste Management sent him an email notification regarding the trash situation. Unfortunately, there are not enough drivers for trash pick-up due to some of the drivers having COVID-19. He also received a notification from the City of Arcadia, with the same notification indicating there will be a modified schedule each week for trash pick- up. Council Member Beck reported the next City Council Meeting will be held on January 19, 2021. Council Member Beck said there is a new development project at the location by 150 N. Santa Anita, north of Denny’s. Council Member Beck reported the project will have condominiums built by Positive Investments. The project will include 319 living units with seven stories, and 170 parking spots. The building will take approximately two years before they commence construction and about two years to complete it. Council Member Beck reported in the near future a request for proposal will be sent out to build townhomes at the Arcadia Par 3 Golf Course. This will take a few years to get started but the proceeds can be used to pay down unfunded City liabilities. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of October 1, 2020. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner R. Martinez, seconded by Commissioner C. Martinez and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 2.a. AYES: Commissioners R. Martinez, C. Martinez, Salter, Mazone, Salazar NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Penny ABSTAIN: None 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported during the week of November 9, Senior Services Staff delivered 42 gifts of gratitude to Arcadia Veterans for their time and services to our Country. Everyone was in good spirits and happy to see familiar faces. On Wednesday, November 25, 169 warm meals were distributed to Arcadia Seniors in a drive-thru manner. It was great to see Community Center participants. Although it was a brief drive-thru, smiles were abundant. On December 3, the Community Center held its first Drive-In Bingo event. There were 50 participants registered and each sat inside their vehicles and played five bingo games. The event was a success and participants said they can’t wait for the next Bingo events scheduled for February 5, April 2, and June 11. RS Hernandez reported the Community Center will have virtual presentations on the following dates: January 12, Home Fit; January 19, Sleep Disorders; February 9, Fraud Watch. Pre-registration is required by calling the Community Center. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi wished everyone a Happy New Year and thanked everyone for participating in the Zoom meeting. RCSD Somogyi reported the City of Arcadia is currently working with the County of Los Angeles and the rest of the Country to hopefully get the COVID-19 vaccine to Arcadia soon. The COVID-19 vaccine is only being administered to first responders at this time. RCSD Somogyi reported there is no information on the COVID-19 vaccine or how it will be administered to seniors or the general public. It will be handled through the Department of Health Services. RCSD Somogyi reported the Recreation and Community Center staff have been trained as a Medical Point of Dispensing Site by Los Angeles County. RCSD Somogyi said there is still no set date for the opening of the Community Center, however, the department will continue to reach out to seniors and assist with their shopping needs and any other services they inquire about.
