PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. Any writings or documents provided to a majority of the Senior Citizen Commission regarding any item on this agenda will be made available for public inspection at the Arcadia Recreation Department, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia, California, during normal business hours. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, April 1, 2021 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:05pm via Zoom. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chairperson Salter ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Charlene Martinez, Ralph Martinez, Kathrynn Penny, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter EXCUSED: Marilyn Mazone A motion was made by Chairperson Salter seconded by Commissioner Salazar and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Mazone. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner R. Martinez, Member at Large, is doing well and mentioned there are only a few condominiums left for sale on Las Tunas Avenue. Commissioner Martinez mentioned there will be a lot more traffic in the area. Commissioner Salazar, representative of the Golden Age Club reported it has been over one year since the Golden Age Club held a meeting. Commissioner Salazar reported he called everyone from the club to check and ask how everyone was doing. Commissioner Salazar was happy to report most club members have received their first COVID-19 vaccine and a few are waiting for their second. Commissioner Salazar asked if there was an update when senior clubs will be able to open. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi said there is no information on the status of community centers, or places that hold large gatherings. Even though, the Los Angeles County is moving to orange tier, there is still no determination when things will open to normal capacity. Commissioner C. Martinez, representative of the Assistance League reported the Bargain Box will be opening every Wednesday starting in April from 9am to 1 pm. The Bargain Box is accepting donations every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays from 9am to noon at Savers. Commissioner Martinez reported Make a Difference Week was a success. Gifts cards were given to students and families to be able to shop for clothes and supplies. Make a Difference Week also provided Staples gift cards to schoolteachers and staff, including a personal note of encouragement for each of them. Commissioner C. Martinez reported some of her senior friends and neighbors were very happy to receive their first COVID-19 vaccine at the Arcadia Community Center. Chairperson Salter reported she received her COVID-19 vaccine and is waiting for everything to get back to normal. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of January 7, 2021. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Chairperson Salter, seconded by Commissioner R. Martinez, and carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar item 2.a. AYES: Commissioners R. Martinez, C. Martinez, Salter, Penny, and Salazar NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Mazone ABSTAIN: None 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor RCSD Sara Somogyi reported on programs held from January through March 2021. The Drive-in Valentine's Bingo was held in February with 46 participants. St. Patrick's Day Luncheon had 105 participants signed up. Over 1,800 participants registered for virtual classes. Over 1,200 monthly Connection newsletters have been mailed. RCSD Somogyi reported the Community Center has held a variety of popular virtual presentations with positive feedback. Many participants have requested virtual seminars to continue when the center opens again. Attendance for virtual seminars range from 13 participants up to 173 participants. RCSD Somogyi reported Coffee and Treats event will be held each month for customers to drive -up, say hello to staff, and get their free coffee and pastry. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RCSD Somogyi reported the Recreation and Community Services Department in collaboration with the Harold Christian Health Center have been operating pop-up vaccine clinics at the Arcadia Community Center in order to get as many people in the City of Arcadia vaccinated. RCSD Somogyi reported the Recreation and Community Services Department will be working with the Arcadia Fire Department and the Department of Health Services by having staff visit over 500 homebound senior residences to ask if they need a vaccine or are interested in having a vaccine. The Arcadia Fire Department will provide a mobile vaccine clinic service to those individuals interested in receiving a vaccine. RCSD Somogyi reported on the Homeless Resource Hub (HRH). The HRH provides services such as free showers, laundry services, food, job training, clothing, medical services, and two case managers who assist with getting individuals experiencing homelessness to get connected with a variety of services. RCSD Somogyi reported the City is exploring the option of bringing 15 tiny homes for individuals experiencing homelessness. RCSD Somogyi reported there is currently a proposed plan to renovate New Castle Park. Online surveys have been available in order to receive community input. The revised park plan will be presented to the Recreation and Parks Commission on April 14, 2021, and to City Council in May. RCSD Somogyi is happy to report the City will hold Concerts and Movies in the Park on August 5 and August 12. The popular groups Cold Duck and The Answer will be performing. IIn Chairperson Secretary Gina Hernandez DATE: July 1, 2021 STAFF REPORT Recreation and Community Services Department TO: Honorable Chairperson and Members of the Senior Citizen Commission FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services Submitted by: Gina Hernandez, Recreation Supervisor SUBJECT: Senior Services, Programs and Activities for April, May, and June 2021 Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE On Friday, April 2, 41 seniors attended Drive -In Bingo at the Community Center and on Friday, June 11, there were 32 Drive -In Bingo registered seniors. Everyone received five game sheets, 73 highlighters, hand sanitizer, and a snack. A few lucky winners drove away with a gift card. On Wednesday, May 5, 120 seniors drove through the Arcadia Cinco de Mayo Community Center to pick up a traditional Latin meal while Luncheon listening to upbeat grooves and greeted by the staff wearing 120 sombreros. Exercise plays a vital role in health and wellness. Virtual classes Classes include line dance, cardio plus, and Zumba. These virtual courses 1,140 contribute to bone density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, the reduction of stress, and improved cardio. During the months of April, May, and June, the Arcadia Police Coffee & Treats and Fire Departments assisted with distributing free coffee and 197 treats to seniors who drove through the Community Center. Total participants each month were: April -53, May -86, June -48. Each month Recreation Staff make wellness calls to seniors to Senior Wellness chat with them, ask how they are doing, and if they need Calls assistance with groceries or senior resources. Seniors look 750 forward to calls and have developed a great relationship with staff. Monthly Monthly bus passes can be purchased at the Community Center Bus Passes for $5. 22 Santa Anita On Friday, April 9, in collaboration with the Gilb Museum of Depot Arcadia Heritage. Presenter, Dale Carter talked about the Santa Virtual Anita Depot, where the railroad used to be located, and about its 21 Presentation current site at the Los Angeles Arboretum. On Friday, April 16, in collaboration with Methodist Hospital, a COVID-19 virtual presentation was held with Infectious Disease Specialist, Update Dr. Hua Juan. Dr. Juan talked about up to date COVID-19 Virtual progression, symptoms, testing, variants including the California 195 Presentation variant, vaccines, and prevention. The presentation was viewed statewide through Facebook Live and WebEx. Psoriatic Arthritis On April 23, in collaboration with Methodist Hospital a virtual & Psoriasis presentation was held with Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran, a Virtual Rheumatologist Specialist. Dr. Tran talked about this painful joint 2,000 Presentation condition that occurs in 50% of patients. The presentation was viewed statewide through Facebook Live and WebEx. Cancer Myths On Tuesday, April 27, in collaboration with the City of Hope a Virtual virtual presentation was held with Dr. Daniel Kim, a Radiation 48 Presentation Oncologist. Dr. Kim talked about cancer myths and facts. Foods That On Tuesday, May 4, in collaboration with Methodist Hospital a Boost Immunity virtual presentation was held with Registered Dietitian, Victoria Virtual Pacheco. Victoria discussed the importance of different types of 135 Presentation foods that boost energy, help with the immune system, stress, and mental health. Who Was Who On Thursday, May 14, in collaboration with the Gilb Museum of in Arcadia Arcadia Heritage a virtual presentation was held with Laura Virtual Hennefort, an Arcadia Volunteer. Laura talked about many 33 Presentation famous celebrities, football players, and entertainers who have lived and still live in Arcadia. Breast Cancer On Tuesday, May 18, in collaboration with the City of Hope a What You Need virtual presentation was held with Dr. Katharyn Costello, an to Know Oncologist at City of Hope. Dr. Costello discussed the different Virtual types of breast cancer cases due to hereditary or hormone driven, 43 Presentation including two types of surgeries for breast cancer, lumpectomy and mastectomy. On Tuesday, May 25, in collaboration with Methodist Hospital a Stroke virtual presentation was held with Dr. Ken Wogensen, a Awareness Neurologist at Methodist Hospital. Dr. Wogensen talked about the Virtual risks and treatments of a stroke, the golden hour, a critical hour 146 Presentation right after a stroke, signs, prevention, and care needed with stroke prevention. Lung Cancer On Friday, June 11, incollaboration with the City of Hope a virtual Virtual presentation was held with Dr. Jonjon Macalintal, a certified 8 Presentation Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Dr. Macalintal presented on the importance of lung cancer screening and tobacco cessation. Movies Made in On Friday, June 18, in collaboration with the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Arcadia Heritage a virtual presentation was held with Museum Virtual Curator, Stevy Acevedo. Stevy talked about movies, television, 10 Presentation and commercials filmed in Arcadia. Skin Cancer On Friday, June 25, in collaboration with Methodist Hospital a Virtual virtual presentation was held on different types of skin cancer, Presentation and how to prevent and keep skin protected during the hot 77 summer months. Walk & Talk resumed in June. Each week participants will walk Walk & Talk approximately 30 minutes with a staff member around the 12 Community Center. Notary services resumed in June with services limited to three Notary Services signatures or thirty minutes every 2"d and 4th Tuesday of each 3 month. An appointment is required.
