HIGHLIGHTS
The Museum plans to reopen to the public on July 6, 2021. The Museum prepares for its 3rd
Annual Virtual Summer Enrichment Program in July.
EXHIBITS
Curator Stevy Acevedo continues to work on the television slideshow for the Museum’s exhibits:
Arcadia in the Movies and Women of Arcadia. Volunteer Laura Henneforth is assisting Curator
Acevedo by working on the PowerPoint slideshow for the Arcadia Walk of Fame exhibit.
Volunteer Henneforth is also working on two new exhibit panels to be placed in the Arcadia Walk
of Fame exhibit since it continues to be a living exhibit that has a carousel of panels.
The Curator also completed work on the exhibit case located in front of
the donor tree in the Museum’s lobby. The exhibit highlights the
Arcadia Chinese Association that was established in 1982. Some of
the items highlighted in the exhibit include awards and certificates to
the association from Congresswoman Judy Chu, Assembly member
Mike Eng, the County of Los Angeles, and the City of Arcadia. These
items were loaned to the Museum by the Arcadia Chinese Association’s
Past President, Ms. Joanna Liang.
Curator Acevedo is currently conducting research on the history of the Museum for the Gilb
Museum’s 20th Anniversary Exhibit, which takes place this year. The Curator has been working
with Librarian Yvonne Ng in researching the archives at the Arcadia Public Library stating the long
history of the Museum. A temporary exhibit will be created in the Fall to showcase the 20 years
of history at the Museum.
COLLECTIONS
Curator Acevedo continues to photograph the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection letters and
postcards since they are too fragile to scan. Volunteer Gigi Chung will be assisting with
photographing the collection as well. These letters are being uploaded to FromThePage to have
virtual volunteers help the Museum staff transcribe them. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum
have generously provided funds for a subscription to FromThePage for more pages to be
uploaded and transcribed by the public. Since the beginning of this project in January 2021, there
2
have been 1,082 pages transcribed from 62 collaborators and 4,262 hours and 19 minutes
dedicated to the transcription of these letters and postcards.
https://fromthepage.com/gilbmuseum/anthony-w-wilkinson-letter-collection
Curator Acevedo has a new Master of Library Science Intern Ms. Tola Livesey who will be
receiving academic credit from the University of Illinois. Ms. Livesey will be working on the
organization, digitization, and curation of the Gilb Museum’s Archive. During the beginning of
her internship, Ms. Livesey created an Archives Policy for the processing of the Museum's archival
collections.
The Museum also has a new volunteer, Ms. Deborah Cordano
assisting with the digitization of the Camp Santa Anita Letter
Collection. The collection consists of approximately 190 letters
written to and from Private Robert Beck during his time stationed
at Camp Santa Anita during World War II.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Mr. Robert Harbicht donated a ticket stub from a Baldwin Ranch event from 1907.
Crew member from Good Girls donated a new disposable face mask that was used by staff
during the filming of Good Girls Season 4.
Mr. Michael Roth donated unbound scrapbook pages from the Singles Club at Holy Angels
Church from the 1940's.
The City Manager’s Office donated four pins that were given to by retired employee Pat
Auriemmo. The pins include a centennial pin from 2003, Arcadia Police Department pin,
PACE (Peace Arcadia through Community Effort) pin from 2000, and an Arcadia DARE (Drug
Abuse Resistance Education) pin.
Mr. Tom Konecny donated a Rand McNally War Atlas Magazine from Raymond A. Dorn Co.
Insurance-Real Estate Building.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto finished
conducting school programs for the 2020-2021 school
year. Ms. Alberto conducted 21 school programs with 3rd
grade classes from Holly Avenue Elementary, Hugo Reid
Elementary, and Camino Grove Elementary, including one
special needs class. Ms. Alberto has presented both “Then
vs. Now” and “Tongva Time” school programs to these
classes. “Then vs. Now” challenges students to think about
how the past is different from the present, using photographs and artifacts from the Museum’s
collection. “Tongva Time '' requires students to follow along the lesson to make Tongva English
dictionaries.
During the month of May, Ms. Alberto conducted 12 school programs to approximately 304
students. Because of school programming, the Museum has had 527 virtual visitors to the
Museum during the 2020-2021 school year.
The Gilb Museum has continued to provide free local history educational kits every month for
the year 2021. For the month of May, the Museum offered the Plantastic Kit and had 57 requests
for 125 kits. In June, the Museum offered the Preschool Plantastic Kit and has had 17 requests
for 43 kits so far. Each kit is designed by Ms. Alberto and her educational intern Hanita Le, which
include a short local history lesson and historical photographs from the Museum’s archive. These
kits were also assembled with the help of local Girl Scout Pearl Wong.
3
Museum Education Coordinator Alberto has also started to work on the Summer Enrichment
Program, which will run through the duration of July. Community members will be able to
participate in live programming and will be able to pick up free kits, which can be used concurrently
with the live SEP program on Saturdays. More information is available on the Museum’s website.
Ms. Alberto scheduled a Girl Scout Program with Daisy Troop 71181 on May 24. This troop is
made up of seven Arcadia-area Scouts who are aged 5-7, and were able to have a lesson
highlighting Earth Day. Since January Ms. Alberto has held once-monthly programming with this
Girl Scout Troop.
The Senior Services Department at the Community
Center has asked the Museum to participate in a partnership
with them in providing a monthly presentation to Arcadia
Senior Services. On May 14, Ms. Laura Henneforth presented
her Famous Arcadians presentation with 21 people in
attendance. Curator Acevedo presented Movies Filmed in
Arcadia on June 18 with eight participants in attendance.
ADMINISTRATION
Curator Acevedo continues to work with Intern Rebecca Andersen on the Cataloging California
grant from the California State Library that is helping fund a paid internship to work on the Anthony
Wilkinson Collection. This grant will help the collection be inventoried, digitized, and curated.
The Museum was awarded the Getty Marrow Multicultural Undergraduate Internship grant
for two internships at the Gilb Museum during the summer: a Curation and Collections internship
and an Education and Marketing internship. The Museum has conducted interviews and has
selected the two interns to work with them during the summer: Ms. Michele Huizar and Ms.
Kimberly Vinoray. The internships are full-time (40 hours/week) for a consecutive ten-week work
period beginning June 21, 2021.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum conducted their board meeting in May through Zoom and
their June meeting in-person in the Museum Education Center for the first time since the start of
the pandemic. The Museum Staff presented their 2021 Wish List to the Board and was approved
at their June meeting. They presented their donation at the City Council Meeting on June 15.
Items on the Museum’s Wish List included funding for more Time Machine Kits that can be used
by Arcadia Unified School District teachers, funding for this year's Virtual Summer Enrichment
Program kits, as well as funding for the local history community kits being created until the end of
the year.
The Museum Staff has also been assisting the Friends Board with providing information and
photographs to include in the ads for the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce Centennial booklet.
The Friends of the Museum Board is also currently brainstorming ideas for next year’s fundraiser.
Their next meeting will take place on August 5.
From May 5-7, television show Good Girls once again filmed at the Gilb Museum and at the
Community Center for Season 4. The production graciously donated $5,000 to the Friends of the
Arcadia Museum which will be used to help provide archival material to curate the Museum’s
collections and to provide funding for the Museum’s educational programs.
Since the Museum’s closure on March 13, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum
plans to reopen to the public on July 6, 2021. Curator Acevedo and Museum Education
Coordinator Alberto are currently working on a reopening strategy for the Museum in July.

MARKETING
Due to the closure to the public, Ms. Alberto continues to be active online by posting on the
Museum’s various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
YouTube. In doing so, the Museum is still able to be engaged with the community and grow its
audience.
Beginning in February, the Museum regularly sends their monthly newsletter to its subscribers
using Mailchimp. This provides another vehicle for the Museum to promote its virtual programs
and exhibits, as well as future events. Community members can subscribe to the newsletter on
the Museum’s website main page. As of now, the Museum has 284 subscribers to the newsletter.
Curator Acevedo worked with Peter Mercado, the department's Information Systems Specialist,
to update items on the Museum’s website. They have created a Transcriptions Project page
that highlights the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection transcription project on FromThePage.
A tutorial video created by Curator Acevedo is also linked to the page via YouTube. Museum
Education Coordinator Alberto also helped boost this project on the Museum’s various social
media pages.
The Museum Staff has also been working on promotional materials, including the Museum’s
2021 Calendar and new stickers, to be included in this year's educational kits, as well as passed
out at the Museum to guests.
New Curator’s Corner videos were created in the months of
May and June, including the history of American Allegiance
Arcadia Post 247 celebrating its centennial this year, and the
history of the Arcadia Woman’s Club Building celebrating 90
years this year.
VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS
The Gilb Museum has begun to recruit new volunteers. The Gilb Museum has received
applications for six new volunteers, two adults and four teen applicants, since making this
opportunity available to the community. Since volunteers have not been allowed to volunteer in-
person for the past year, they have been helping by completing virtual projects, such as the
transcription of the Anthony W. Wilkinson collection, compiling kit statistics, and attending bi-
monthly volunteer meetings. A mandatory Volunteer Orientation was held for new and
returning volunteers to the Museum. As of June 2, volunteers have been allowed to return to
the Museum in-person. Volunteers have been stationed in physically distanced areas and are
currently helping Ms. Alberto to compile materials for the Summer Enrichment Program.
Ms. Alberto has also worked to develop a new Front Desk Volunteer/Docent position, with the
help of Curator Acevedo. Currently Museum staff is training four adult volunteers to take on this
position.
Angela Song has completed her virtual internship with Curator Acevedo. Ms. Song was able to
work on future grants that are recurring every year that the Museum can apply to fund internships,
promote programs, and to purchase essential curatorial supplies for the collection. Ms. Song
completed 188 hours total for her virtual internship.
Hanita Le, the Museum’s virtual Education Intern, continued to help Ms. Alberto create lesson
plans for educational programming, design kits for preschoolers, and helped conduct Girl Scout
programming. Ms. Le also helped Ms. Alberto create the lesson plans for the Summer Enrichment
Program. Her internship ended June 14 and she completed 197 hours for her virtual internship.
5
Volunteer Jonathan Ornelas began volunteering in-person once again at the Museum. He is
assisting Intern Andersen with the inventory of the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection, and assisting
Ms. Alberto in creating new coloring pages to include in her local history educational kits.
The teen internship for the Faces of Arcadia Oral History Project continues to go well. The
teen internship consists of eight teens who have previously been teen volunteers at the Museum.
Staff continues to conduct workshops and meetings to see their progress, answer any questions,
and prepare the interns with their oral interviews. Each intern is currently working on their fourth
interview with members of the Arcadia Community. Anyone interested in the project can visit the
Museum’s website for more information.
Volunteer hours:
May 1 to June 18: 241.15 hours
FACILITIES
Staff continues to monitor the climate in the collections room, as well as the exhibit space.
