SUBJECT: GRADING OBSERVATIONS AND FIELD DENSITY TESTING
Swimming Pool Backfilling(Non-Structural Fill)
620 E Pamela Road, Arcadia, CA 91006
Gentlemen:
Per request, MTC Engineering, Inc. (MTC) has performed grading observations and soil density
tests for backfilling the swimming pool at the referenced site. The fills were certified by MTC as
non-structural fill in accordance with the recommendations of MTC, project specifications, and the
City grading ordinances.
SITE CONDITIONS AND PURPOSE OF GRADING
The subject property is located at 620 E Pamela Road, Arcadia, CA 91006. The purpose of the
grading is to backfill the existing swimming pool for a future lawn area. The pool was 4 to 8.5 feet
deep, irregular in shape, and approximately 18 and 38 feet for the short and long axis, respectively
(see Figure 1). The top 12 to 18 inches of pool shell were removed, and two 2-foot square holes
were punched through the pool bottom which were observed and approved by the Cuity inspector
and a representative of this office. The depths of the compacted fills are 4 to 8.5 feet. The grading
limits and compaction test locations for the backfilling are shown on Figure 1.
GRADING PROCEDURES
In general,the grading was performed as follows: . •
a) Two 3 to 4-foot square holes were punched at the bottoms of pool at 4 feet and 8.5 feet in depth,
and the top 18 to 24 inches of the pool shell were removed.
b) Heavy duty bobcat, jumping jack, and water hose were utilized for excavating, watering, and
compacting. Imported gray brown silty clay were used as compacted fill and all fill soils were
spread in 6 to 8 inch lift, moistened to near the optimum moisture content, compacted, and tested
in not more than two-foot intervals to the finished grades.
SPECIFICATIONS AND TEST RESULTS
The soil used in compacted fill is classified and tabulated in Table 1. The imported soil is suitable
for the project and approved by MTC. The specified minimum degree of compaction is 90 percent of
the maximum dry density, as determined by the ASTM Standard D 1557. Field density tests were

performed in accordance with the current standard of the ASTM Standards D 1556 (sand cone,
Minimum 1 in 5 tests) and the ASTM D 2922 (nuclear gauge). The field moisture contents were
performed in accordance with the ASTM Standard D 4959 or D 3017. The test results are tabulated
in Table 2. The test locations are shown on Figure 1, attached.
As indicated in Table 2 FIELD DENSITY TEST SUMMARY, SC represented the Sand Cone
tests and NG represented the Nuclear Gauge tests. Wherever field density tests failed, the soils were
scarified, re-mixed to near optimum moisture, and re-compacted to obtain required density.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The compacted fills reported herein have been properly placed and compacted for non-structural
fill (compacted fill not for supporting any structure) at the site. The work inspected and approved
by MTC is in accordance with the recommendations of MTC, applicable provisions of the City
building code and the current California Building Code.
The followings are the summery of the grading observations, testing, and recommendations for the
project.
• The observation and test results indicate that the backfilled soils were compacted properly in
accordance with project specifications, recommendations of MTC and the City grading
ordinances.
• Final grading should provide a positive drainage to divert surface water away from the
foundation areas of existing building in compliance with the local jurisdiction's grading
requirements. All drainage should be collected and diverted away from the existing building in
non-erosive devices.
This report pertains only to the grading as described herein and is subject to review by the
controlling authorities for the project.
