(Group Delta) submits this letter report to document geotechnical construction observations and testing for the referenced project. This letter includes a project background, summary of observations and testing performed during trench backfill operations, and density test results. Group Delta's field observation and testing work as performed at Santa Anita Park (SAP) from July 7,2021 to July 27,2021. 1.0 BACKGROUND AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION Phase I of the Santa Anita Park (SAP) CAFO project includes the Lot 7 diversion storm drain improvement consisting of construction of a new storm drain line. Group Delta was contracted to provide geotechnical observation and testing services during trench excavation and backfill during installation of the proposed storm drain line. The location of the site is shown in Figure 1 and the location of the trench is shown in Figure 2. 2.0 WORK PERFORMED AND GEOTECHNICAL OBSERVATION AND TESTING Group Delta observed the excavation and backfill of a section of a strom drain trench between approximately Station 2+50 and 7+00, as shown on Figure 2. Placement of pipe included the placement of crushed rock bedding material and pipe. After start of the construction activities, the need for a redesign of the storm drain pipe alignment was identified by the design team.The following activities were then performed by the contractor: • Pipe was removed from the sections of trench where pipe had been installed. • Where crushed rock bedding was present, in sections where pipe was removed, the crushed rock was left in the trench and compacted using a manually-operated compactor with vibratory plate. • The remaining portion of the trench as backfilled with compacted soil backfill. 370 Amapola Avenue,Suite 212,Torrance,CA 90501 TEL: (310)320-5100 Anaheim—Irvine—Ontario—San Diego—Torrance www.GroupDelta.com Trench Backfill Observation and Compaction Testing August 18,2021 Lot 7 Diversion Project Santa Anita Park Page 2 Group Delta Project No. LA-1521 Group Delta's geotechnical services during trench backfill included the following: • Sampled and performed laboratory maximum dry density compaction tests(Per ASTM D1557) on soil to be used as fill. • Observed trench excavation bottoms to document bottoms were firm and unyielding prior to placement of bedding, pipe, or backfill. • Observed placement and compaction of crushed rock bedding. • Observed the placement and compaction of trench soil backfill. Group Delta performed density tests of compacted backfill using a nuclear density gauge. • Daily Field Reports were provided to the site representative. • Prepared this letter report. 3.0 BACKFILL OPERATION The trench was backfilled with crushed rock and compacted soil backfill. Figure 2 shows which sections of trench included crushed rock backfill and approximate thickness. Where present, crushed rock backfill was placed at the bottom of the trench and consisted of bedding that was left in place after removal of the pipe. Dry density and moisture content of the compacted soil backfill was measured using a nuclear soil density gauge. The test results showed that the soil backfill was compacted to at least 90% of the maximum dry density obtained per ASTM D1557. The laboratory test results for maximum dry density and optimum moisture content, and field density test results are shown in the attached Table 1 and Table 2, respectively.The field density test locations are shown in Figure 2. The laboratory test data are presented in Appendix A. 4.0 CONCLUSION Based on our field observation and testing, trench backfill and compaction operations were performed in general conformance with our recommendations and the project specifications. This report was prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practice. The professional engineering work and judgments presented in this report meet the standard of care of our profession at this time. No other warranty, either expressed or implied, is made.
