Pamela Road Arcadia, California Dear Mr. Asseraf: This report presents the results of observation and testing performed during the preparation and placing of compacted backfill for the swimming pool excavation at the subject site. The compacted fill reported herein is considered primary structural fill for support of footings and slabs. Compaction tests were performed in accordance with ASTM:D-1556 (Sand Cone Method) and ASTM:D-2922. The test locations and limits of compacted fill are shown on the enclosed Compaction Map. Results of the tests are tabulated on the enclosed "Compaction Test Results". SITE PREPARATION The area of the pool excavation which was backfilled was approximately 14 feet wide by 28 feet long, as shown on the enclosed Compaction Map. The maximum depth of the excavation was approximately eight feet. Prior to any backfill, the bottom of the shell had 24" x 24" drain holes opened every 8' and the upper approximately 24" of the shell of the old pool was demolished and the debris hauled away. The bottom of the excavation was cleared of all trash and debris and was observed and approved by us on May 28, 2021. FILL PLACEMENT Import soils were used to construct the fill and consisted of clayey sand. The fill material was placed in 6- to 8-inch lifts, watered to optimum moisture content, mixed and compacted to a minimum of 90% of the maximum dry density as determined by ASTM:D-1557. Equipment used in placing and compacting the fill consisted of a small rubber tire loader, a vibratory compactor, hand tampers and watering equipment. Engineering Geology - Soil Engineering Ace Demolition Corp. Page 2 Project No. 31-9999-135 68 W. Pamela Road June 17, 2021 The maximum dry density/optimum moisture of the fill soils was determined in accordance with ASTM:D-1557. Results of the tests are tabulated on the enclosed "Laboratory Test Results". EXPANSIVENESS An expansion test was performed on a typical sample of the material obtained. The sample was tested in accordance with ASTM:D-4829 under a surcharge of 144 lb/ft2. The following result was obtained: Sample Depth (ft.) Soil Type Expansion Index Potential Expansion 0 - 1 Clayey SAND 23 Low (Import) DIRECT SHEAR TEST (ASTM:D-3080) In order to determine the shear strength of the soils, a direct shear test was performed on a remolded sample of the import soils. The remolded sample was tested at 90% of the maximum density. To simulate possible adverse field conditions, the sample was saturated prior to shearing. A graphic summary of the test result, including moisture content at the time of shearing, is enclosed. SOIL BEARING PRESSURE Conventional continuous and spread footings founded on compacted fill may be designed for a maximum soil bearing pressure of 2,000lb/ft2. Based on the potential expansion, minimum embedment for the footings should be 18 inches and 24 inches below the lowest adjacent grade for 1-story and 2-story buildings, respectively. The footings should have a minimum width of 15 inches. Continuous footings should have a minimum reinforcement consisting of four No. 4 bars: two placed about four inches from the top and two placed about four inches from the bottom. Floor slabs-on-grade should reflect its anticipated usage and should be designed by the structural engineer. In areas where floor coverings or equipment sensitive to moisture are contemplated, a 10-mil visqueen should be placed beneath the slab with one inch of sand between the concrete slab and the visqueen to aid in curing and prevent puncture of the visqueen. 5,\,,aa _ A.G.I. Pamela Road June 17, 2021 CONCLUSIONS At the locations and elevation tested by us, the fill for the excavation was compacted to at least 90% of the maximum dry density as determined by ASTM:D-1557. In providing professional geotechnical observations and testing services associated with the development of this project, we have employed accepted engineering and testing procedures and have made every reasonable effort to ascertain that the soil related work was carried out in general compliance with the project plans and specifications. Although our observations did not reveal obvious deficiencies, we do not guarantee the contractor's work, nor do the services performed by our firm relieve the contractor of responsibility in the event of subsequently discovered defects in his work. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact this office. Respectfully submitted, QQ(ioFESS/04, fikS A.G.I.
