PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSIONERS Any writings or documents provided to a majority of the Senior Citizen Commission regarding any item on this agenda will be made available for public inspection at the Arcadia Recreation Department, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia, California, during normal business hours. There will be no separate discussion of these items unless members of the Commission, staff, or the public request that a specific item be removed from the Consent Calendar for separate discussion and action. a. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, September 2, 2021 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Swope ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: Kathrynn Penny and Nilo Salazar A motion was made by Commissioner Cao seconded by Vice -Chairperson Mazone and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Penny and Salazar. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Cao wanted to commend the Arcadia Rotary Club for the Field of Honor Flags at Arcadia County Park. There are 1,000 American Flags that will fly at the Arcadia County Park from August 29 through September 5, 2021. Commissioner Cao reported open day ceremony was well attended on August 29. The Field of Honor, honors all those who have served. One third of proceeds raised will go toward Veterans programs, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Arcadia Unified School District teacher grants, and more. Commissioner Swope reported she is pleased to see the Field of Honor Flags at the Arcadia County Park. Commissioner Swope reported the Friendship Club will meet for the first time in a very long time on Wednesday, September 8. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club held their first general meeting on August 29 with 49 people in attendance. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported on the following day trip to the SoFi Stadium: A VIP tour of the SoFi stadium was enjoyed by members on August 16. The stadium cost was 5 -billion dollars. SoFi stands for Social Finance, Inc. In order for the SoFi name to remain the same, 30 -million dollars are to be paid each year for the next 30 years. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported on the following day trips coming soon: Big Bear Lake will take place on September 9, members will spend the day in Big Bear followed by lunch, and a visit to the Alpine Zoo. On September 29, members will take a day trip to San Diego Balboa Park. On November 4, a trip to the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will take place followed by lunch at Lawry's. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported South Dakota/Mount Rushmore and Albuquerque Balloon Festival extended trips are both sold out. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported an overnight trip to Las Vegas will go on sale in October and the trip will take place in February. The next general meeting will be held on Friday, September 24, at the Community Center, if the building maintenance is completed. Chairperson Salter reported she attended the Arcadia Concerts and Movies in the Park and was pleased to see how well attended it was. She also attended the Beatles Tribute at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Chairperson Salter reported Las Alas members will be holding their meetings again starting in September. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League Club members are looking forward to their first meeting in September. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League established a contract with Family Promise of San Gabriel to help families challenged with homelessness or low income, to achieve sustainable independence. Starting in the fall, Operation School Bell will begin to take orders to provide supplies, clothing, and other school items for students. School personnel will personally deliver the supplies to students. Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box will be closed for two weeks early September and re -open on September 15. Donations will be accepted Monday and Tuesday 9:30am to noon. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Pro Tem Paul Cheng reported he attended the Independent Cities Association (ICA) Conference where independent cities meet and share ideas such as homeless issues, solutions, and more. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng will be attending the League of California Cities at the end of the month where cities come together to enhance their knowledge, exchange information and resources. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported although Timothy Peabody was released from the hospital just before the scheduled blood donation event on Saturday, September 4, the Police Department staff is still planning to donate blood. Timonthy Teabody is in need of O negative blood and anyone who stops by to donate blood will get to enjoy a free lunch meal. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported the next City Council Meeting is scheduled for September 21, and invites Commissioners to attend and share their thoughts. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Guest Speaker Matthew Castillo from Veteran Peer Access Network Guest speaker Matthew Castillo from Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN) talked about services available for Veterans and their family members. Some of the VPAN services include mental health treatment, temporary and permanent housing, healthcare access, legal services, and much more. Matthew Castillo is available every Wednesday from 9am to 1 pm in the Community Center Lobby. A Veteran support line is also available by calling 800.854.7771. Matthew can also be reached by email at matthew.castillo cD-*vs-socal.orq. b. Report of Recreation Supervisor Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported on upcoming senior events. The Western Hoedown themed drive-through lunch will be held on Friday, September 17, for $10 per person. Senior Cinema is back every Wednesday at 12:45pm, where seniors can enjoy current or classic films on a theatre -size screen. Walk & Talk meets every Wednesday at 10am with a staff person for a 30 -minute leisurely walk. A special tour has been arranged for Walk & Talk participants on Wednesday, September 22 at the Le Meridien Hotel. An open house of the Gilb Museum is scheduled on October 16 for its 20 -Year Anniversary. Guests can enjoy a guided tour of the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage and behind -the -scenes look at the museum's collection. c. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung reported Senior Administrative Assistant, Toni McKiernan retired after 34 years of service with the City. Administrative Assistant, Bani Antonacci will return to the Community Center front counter. Office Assistant, Karen Collins will remain in the Recreation Office, front counter. ADRCS Cheung reported the partition walls in the Community Center ballroom are getting re -done with new fabric. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. Due to the renovation of the partition walls, senior lunch meals are served in the back patio for the next few weeks. ADRCS Cheung reported the City is currently working on applying for San Gabriel Valley Council of Government homeless grants. One of the grants is to continue to have a case manager available for those experiencing homelessness and to continue the same level of service the City of Arcadia has been providing. The application for the grants are due mid- September. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their 69 Visitors Gift creations and allows the community to purchase one -of -a -kind Monthly Revenue Shop items ata great price. $493 This program assists seniors and their families with issues that Information & affect their quality of life by providing information and referral that 12 Referral Intakes address their daily living concerns. Pool Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from 253 7:30am-4:30pm. Senior Nutrition A nutritious meal is provided Monday -Friday for senior citizens. 1,049 Program For many seniors, this is the only hot meal they have on a daily Average/Day 48 basis. Exercise plays a vital role in health and wellness. Virtual classes Virtual include line dance, cardio plus, and Zumba. These virtual courses 322 Classes contribute to bone density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, the reduction of stress, and improved cardio. Table Tennis is available Monday -Friday, from 10:30am-3:30pm. Table Seniors have the opportunity to drop in and play to gain exercise 33 Tennis and socialization. Every Wednesday at 10am, seniors join a staff member for a Walk & Talk short, leisure walk around the Community Center and 24 surrounding areas. On September 22, 17 Seniors walked over to the new Le Meridian Hotel for a tour of the new facility. Monthly bus passes can be mailed to seniors to provide a way for Monthly seniors to purchase their pass. The monthly bus pass is $5 per 9 Bus Passes month. Weekly Movie Movies are shown on a theater size screen every y' Wednesda 48 Average/Week 10 Every month, a non-profit agency presents on senior topics. Senior September seminar topics: Elias Lucky Baldwin in collaboration 42 Seminars with the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage and Atrial Fibrillation & Heart Health in collaboration with Arcadia Methodist Hospital. Notary services are limited to three signatures or thirty minutes i Notary per appointment every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month by 6 Serves appointment. Every Wednesday, the local ambassador from the Veteran Peer Access Network is at the Community Center to help connect any Veteran and their family members to various services from gam - Veteran Peer 1 pm. Ambassador Matthew Castillo is the representative for LA 4 Access Network County Supervisory District 5 and assists the Veteran seniors with mental health treatment, substance abuse support, temporary and permanent housing, and much more. Support services include registering members for trips, signing up Meeting: 35 Arcadia new members, and handling the club's correspondence. A Passes Sold: 95 Travelers Club monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss Passengers: 135 Total: 265 future trips and provide a social gathering. Western On Friday, September 17, 79 Seniors drove thru the Community Hoedown Center parking lot to pick up a boxed lunch with all the trimmings. 79 Drive-Thru The Arcadia Rotary Club assisted with handing out the meals and Lunch prepping the personal goodie bags. TOTAL Cumulative of programs, services, and special events 2,215 Connection Total number of monthly newsletters distributed this month 800 SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHT On Thursday, September 16, friendly staff from Garfield Medical Center stopped by during lunch to inform everyone about their facility, flu clinic, excellent care services, upcoming events, and locations in the San Gabriel Valley. Seniors were given a safety goodie bag to take home.
