HIGHLIGHTS
The Gilb Museum 20th Anniversary celebration took place on October 16 with 125 people in
attendance, including U.S. Representative Judy Chu (27th District) and Assemblyman Ed Chau
(49th District).
EXHIBITS
Curator Stevy Acevedo installed a new display case highlighting the Ranch Owners of Santa
Anita. The Museum had custom cattle brands created that were the same that the ranch owners
of Santa Anita would have used. With the help of Interns Michele Huizar and Jonathan Ornelas,
the six cattle brands were installed and put on display in the Museum’s permanent exhibit timeline.
Curator Acevedo, with the help of the Museum’s volunteers and interns,
completed the curation and installation of the Gilb Museum’s 20th
Anniversary Exhibit. The exhibit opening took place on October 16,
2021 and will be on display until February 26, 2022. The Curator had
been working with a team of interns and volunteers including Rebecca
Andersen, Michele Huizar, Eva Baudler and Jonathan Ornelas.
Curator Acevedo and Interns Andersen and Baudler are currently
working on a smaller exhibit on the 20th Anniversary that will be on
display at the Arcadia Public Library that will be installed the first week of November.
Curator Acevedo and Intern Eva Baudler are working on two exhibit panels that will be on display
at the Arcadia Community Center for the Veteran’s Day celebration on November 10.
COLLECTIONS
The Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection Transcription project, consisting of approximately 700
letters and postcards, is still in the process of being transcribed by the virtual volunteer community
on FromThePage. Since the beginning of this project in January 2021, there have been 1,284
pages transcribed and 918-page edits from 82 collaborators and 9,693 hours dedicated to this
2
project. Community members are still encouraged to participate. More information can be found
on the Museum website.
Curator Acevedo continues to work with volunteer Tola Livesey who is working on the
organization, digitization, curation, and inventory of the Gilb Museum’s Archive, specifically the
City of Arcadia Newsletters, Hot Sheets, and the Arcadia Unified School District News and
Views.
Volunteer Deborah Cordano is transcribing the Camp Santa Anita Letter Collection. The
collection consists of approximately 190 letters written to and from Private Robert Beck during his
time stationed at Camp Santa Anita during World War II. Since all the letters have now been
digitized, volunteer Angela Ayala has been assisting with this project by curating the letters into
archival sleeves and folders to help preserve the collection.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Denice Gilb donated her mother’s (Ruth Gilb) President of Arcadia Tournament of Roses
scrapbook from 1984-85.
April Verlato donated a map of Arcadia from 1968, an Arcadia Lumber flyer, and a postcard
of Motel 6 in Arcadia.
Carole Cramer donated a 1991 calendar “Views of Arcadia” by the Arcadia High School Art
Club, an Arcadia High School yearbook from 1953 and an Arcadia Apaches 1982-83
boosters club booklet.
Nancy Wallen donated two framed artworks of racehorses and two framed photographs of
Anita Baldwin and Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin. She had these in her office during her time
working at the Santa Anita Racetrack. These have been installed and put on display in the
Research Library at the Museum.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
This year, the Museum is celebrating its 20th
Anniversary. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum
board helped to host the festive program on
Saturday, October 16 to celebrate this Museum
celebration. Staff provided behind-the-scenes tours of
the collection space, as well as educational
demonstrations of past and current programs and
projects in the Museum Education Center. Friends of
the Museum board invited dignitaries, including U.S.
Representative Judy Chu and Assemblyman Ed
Chau who attended the event. Representative Chu and Assemblyman Chau presented
certificates to Curator Acevedo and Director Bradley. Other dignitaries also presented certificates
to the Gilb Museum, including representatives from Senator Susan Rubio’s office and
Supervisor Kathryn Barger. Mayor Sho Tay and Mayor Pro Tempore Paul Cheng attended
the event and spoke about their involvement with the Museum. Special guests included Ruth and
Charles Gilb’s daughters, Denice and Valerie, and the granddaughter of Carol Libby. The event
was well-attended with 125 people in attendance. Eleven members of the Arcadia Civic Youth
Council from Arcadia High School volunteered to help during the event. The Arcadia Police
Department’s Volunteers In Patrol (VIP) had one VIP to assist with traffic control and parking
which was very much appreciated.
The Gilb Museum provided free local history educational kits every month for the year 2021.
In September, Ms. Alberto distributed 121 Scrapbook Studio educational kits, which included
all the necessary items for children to create their own scrapbooks. It also included a short history
lesson surrounding the Arcadia Woman’s Club collection, highlighting their scrapbooks.

partnership to provide monthly historic presentations to Arcadia
Seniors. For Fall, the Gilb Museum is hosting a three-part
Baldwin series, exploring Lucky Baldwin (September 10),
Anita Baldwin (October 8), and Clara Baldwin Stocker
(November 5). At the first presentation on Elias Jackson
“Lucky” Baldwin, there were six in attendance and 41 viewed
the recording that was later uploaded to YouTube. At the
October presentation on Anita Baldwin, there were four
people in attendance with 18 people viewing the recording.
Museum Education Coordinator Alberto has been very active in providing school programs to
local Arcadia elementary schools. She conducted four school programs at Camino Grove
Elementary and has been receiving requests from Longley Way, Hugo Reid, Highland Oaks
Elementary Schools. For Fall of 2021, Ms. Alberto received 19 requests to do on-site school

November 1. Dale Carter has also received a request to present at the Daughters of the
American Revolution Santa Anita Chapter membership meeting on November 4. A press
release on Ms. Henneforth and her upcoming talk was in the Arcadia Weekly.
ADMINISTRATION
Curator Acevedo submitted the final report for the Cataloging California grant to the California
State Library. This grant helped fund a paid internship to work on the Anthony W. Wilkinson
Collection. Intern Andersen finished the inventory of the collection and curated the letters and
postcards. The Curator plans to apply to the California Revealed Description Assistance grant
from the California State Library to once again fund a paid internship to work with one of the
Museum’s collections.
The Museum was awarded the Digitization and Preservation Assistance Award for the
Arcadia Woman’s Club Collection in 2020-021. It can now be found on the California Revealed
website: https://californiarevealed.org/collections/gilb-museum-arcadia-heritage
Curator Acevedo also submitted the 2021-22 California Revealed Description Assistance
Award to the California State Library for the Anthony Wilkinson Collection.
4
Lastly, Curator Acevedo submitted the final narrative reports for the Getty Marrow
Multicultural Undergraduate Internship grant for two internships at the Gilb Museum during
the summer of 2021. Michele Huizar and Kimberly Vinoray’s internships ended during the first
week of September. The Museum staff plans to reapply for the Getty Marrow Internship grant
once again for 2022.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum conducted their board meeting in-person on October 7 in
the Museum Education Center. Museum staff discussed with Board members the Museum's 20th
Anniversary program for October 16. Their next meeting will take place on November 9, when
they will discuss their participation in this year’s Snow Day on December 4 at the Community
Center.
Museum staff attended the Arcadia Unified School District PTA meeting virtually through
Google Meet on September 4. At the meeting, Ms. Alberto promoted events and programs
currently taking place at the Museum.
Ms. Alberto was invited to attend the Holly Avenue Elementary School PTA meeting virtually
through Zoom on September 22 where she highlighted the Museum's educational kits available
for community members.
On September 21, staff from the Human Resources Department brought
new city employees to visit the Museum and see other departments
around the City of Arcadia. Ms. Alberto gave the visitors a tour of the
exhibit spaces.
In September Ms. Alberto was contacted by the Work Source Project
for volunteer. Virginia Hosanna to receive payment for her volunteer
time. Virginia is a special needs adult volunteer and comes to the
Museum once or twice a week and helps with projects.
Curator Acevedo and Director Darlene Bradley were invited by member Marilyn Daleo to attend
the Arcadia Woman’s Club Luncheon on October 6th. During the luncheon, the Arcadia
Woman’s Club had special guest speaker Dean M. Gray, (no relation), who presented a history
on Hilda M. Gray, a local resident of Arcadia in the early 1900’s.
Museum staff completed the Museum’s Annual Report for 2020-21. In the report, they
highlighted programs, projects, and awards given to staff during the fiscal year. The report is
available on the Museum's website.
MARKETING
Museum Education Coordinator Alberto continues to grow the
Museum’s audience across social media. She has been conducting
#20yearsin20days leading up to the Gilb Museum’s 20th
Anniversary on October 20. Everyday Ms. Alberto posted a different
photograph from a different year of the Gilb Museum’s history.
The Museum is growing the number of subscribers that have signed up to receive the Museum’s
monthly newsletter through Mailchimp. As of now, the Museum’s subscribers to the
newsletter has grown to 355 individuals. Community members can subscribe to the newsletter
on the Museum’s website main page.
A new Curator’s Corner video was made for Ask A Curator Day on September 15. The Gilb
Museum staff asked community members to submit their questions to Curator Acevedo. There
was a great turnout, which also included teachers' questions from Camino Grove Elementary.
5
VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS
The Gilb Museum currently has 36 volunteers, including both teens and adults. For September
and October, volunteers helped to create kits for the Museum’s educational programs and special
events, and helped the Museum prepare for the 20th anniversary celebration. Many of the teens
have also been trained to scan books and documents, create inventories, and answer the phone.
On September 11, Ms. Alberto conducted a Teen Volunteer
Orientation for all the Museum’s teen volunteers. Many of the
teen volunteers were onboarded during the closure of the Museum
and have not been given a tour of the Museum. The staff also
wanted to give past volunteers a refresher since many had not
been physically at the Museum in over a year because of the
pandemic.
The Museum has two new unpaid internships for the fall semester. Eva Baudler is the
Museum’s Collection and Curation Intern. She has been working on digitizing the Museum’s
photograph collection and has been trained to use the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. She
assisted the Curator in the curation and installation of exhibits, including the 20th Anniversary
exhibit.
Intern Daniela Bedolla is the Museum’s current Educational Intern and is receiving college
credit from California State University of San Bernardino. Ms. Bedolla is working with Museum
Education Coordinator Alberto on the Time Machine kit highlighting the Tongva Native Americans
as well as creating new lesson plans for Ms. Alberto’s Preschool Program.
Volunteer Jonathan Ornelas and Intern Eva Baulder have been taught by Curator Acevedo on
how to build custom boxes for items in the Museum’s collection. Mr. Ornelas has been focusing
on items in the collection, including civic organization bells and trophies.
The teen internship for the “Faces of Arcadia” Oral History Project continues to go well. The
teen internship consists of eight teens that previously have been teen volunteers at the Museum.
Staff continues to check-in to see their progress, answer any questions, and prepare the interns
with their oral interviews with community members. Anyone interested in the project can visit the
Museum’s website for more information. The Gilb Museum Staff is also organizing a History
Symposium in March of 2022 for the teen interns to highlight their projects on interviewing Arcadia
community members about events in the past and present.
