Citizens Commission Meetings are closed to the public. Pursuant to the Brown Act, Assembly
Bill 361 Section 3(e)(3), California Government Code Section 54953 (e)(3), the Arcadia Senior
Citizens Commission will meet virtually. The public is welcome to listen to Arcadia Senior

How to Submit Public Comment:
Citizens who wish to submit public comment may do so using one of the following methods.
Public comment is limited to the time and words allotted.

meeting time. Your email must be 300 words or less.

1. PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON)
Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes
per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior
Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the
posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or
action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

JANUARY 6, 2022
SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported their last board meeting of 2021 was held on December 16,
and their general meeting on December 17, 2021, had 50 members in attendance and were
able to enjoy a special entertainment by a string quartet. Travelers staff members and their
guests held their Christmas lunch at the North Woods Inn Restaurant after the general meeting.
Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported Travelers had a great time at the Equestfest in Burbank
even though it was raining. Everyone enjoyed the horse show with most of the horses which
perform in the Rose Parade. After the show, travelers enjoyed a warm meal at the Smoke
House Restaurant.
Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming trips. On January 12, members will visit Cardiff
by the Sea to meet therapeutic horses. These gentle horses make a difference in lives of
challenged individuals. On January 19, members will visit the new Grammy Museum followed
by a visit to the Hollywood Bowl, Disney Concert Hall, and the Music Center. On February 2,
members will enjoy The Orient Express experience where they will learn about the culture and
history of three Asian communities. This trip will include food tasting and an authentic Chinese
lunch to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Year of the Tiger. The popular SoFi Stadium trip is
being offered again in March, more information on this trip will be provided once the date is
confirmed.
Commissioner Cao reported he was happy to attend the senior holiday festivities at the
Community Center and the Down Town Arcadia Holiday Fair on December 4. Commissioner
Cao said he saw all age groups, families, seniors, as well as Congresswoman Judy Chu, State
Senator Susan Rubio, Mayor Sho Tay, and Mayor Pro Tem Paul Cheng at the Arcadia Holiday
Fair.
Commissioner Salazar asked what the protocol is to change the Golden Age Club name to the
Golden Senior Club. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi said
the club is separate from the City, and the Club can change their name without the City’s
consent. RCSD Somogyi advised that their club should update their non-profit status and the
Community Center would need to change the information in the Connection Newsletter.
Commissioner Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club had their Christmas party on
December 17 and looks forward to the new year and more activities.
Commissioner Penny said she stopped by the Breakfast with Santa and the Snowfest event on
Saturday, December 4, and said it was a very nice event.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box will re-open Wednesdays and Saturdays from
10am to 1pm and donations are accepted every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday
from 10am to 12:30pm. Commissioner Martinez reported on Christmas Eve, the Assistance
League donated and distributed 200 winter jackets to the backstretch workers at Santa Anita
Park.
Chairperson Salter reported she attended the beautiful holiday light show at The Arboretum.
Chairperson Salter mentioned the trees on the west side of the street should be trimmed as
pedestrians have to step off the curb and could be dangerous with the oncoming traffic. RCSD
Somogyi said she would pass the information on to the Public Works Service Department.
Chairperson Salter mentioned there is a blinking yellow arrow on the corner of Baldwin Avenue
and Naomi Avenue and asked if this a new normal? RCSD Somogyi said she would contact the
City’s Traffic Engineer on this matter and report back to the commission.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Mayor Pro Tem Paul Cheng reported the City celebrated the life of Council Member Roger
Chandler at the City Council meeting. Council Member Chandler passed away on November 23,
2021. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported for those who wish to address the City Council, a
completed form must be submitted 30-mintues prior to the meeting time. Public comments will
only be allowed during the public comment time at 7pm and no later.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported on programs held in December 2021.
The Senior Holiday Brunch was held on December 3 with 96 participants in attendance. Bunco
was held on December 10 with 24 participants in attendance. Methodist Hospital held a free flu
shot clinic at the Community Center in December, with 37 participants in attendance. The
Senior Lunch Program continues to be a popular program with a total of 893 meals served
during the month of December.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
RCSD Somogyi wished everyone a happy new year and reported there have been a few
program and event cancellations due to the rise in cases of the Omicron variant and hopes by
March we can begin to offer programs in person once again. Some of the canceled programs
are Monday Dance, Movies, Mahjong, and Tech Talk. RCSD Somogyi reported the Community
Center will have the Tax Preparation service available this year for senior citizens. Tax
appointments will be available starting Friday, January 7. RCSD Somogyi reported meetings will
continue to be via Zoom until further notice.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salter adjourned the meeting at 4:34pm to February 3, 2022, at 4:00pm via Zoom.

Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude
of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday for senior citizens.
For many seniors, this is the only hot meal they have on a daily
basis.

Classes
Exercise plays a vital role in health and wellness. Classes
include line dance, cardio plus, Zumba and more. These courses
contribute to bone density improvement, increased muscle
strength, flexibility, the reduction of stress, and improved cardio.

Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 1:30-3:30pm.
Seniors have the opportunity to drop in and play to gain exercise
and socialization.

Walk & Talk
Every Wednesday at 10am, seniors join a staff member for a
short, leisurely walk around the Community Center and
surrounding areas.

Monthly
Bus Passes
The monthly bus pass is $5 per month and available for senior
citizens to use with Dial-A-Ride services. Seniors can purchase
their pass in person, or it can also be mailed to their home.

Notary
Services
Notary services are limited to three signatures or thirty minutes
per appointment. Notary Service is available. every 2nd and 4th
Tuesday of each month.

Veteran Peer
Access Network
Every Wednesday, from 9am to 1pm, Brock Milhorn from
Veteran Peer Access Network is available to assist Veterans and
family members to services such as mental health treatment,
substance abuse support, housing, and more.

Arcadia
Travelers Club
Support services include registering members for trips, signing
up new members, and handling the club’s correspondence. A
monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss
future trips and provide a social gathering.

On January 14, the Community Center held a Martin Luther King
Jr. lunch celebration with entertainment. A special presentation

JANUARY HIGHLIGHT
Martin Luther King Jr. Lunch Celebration
On Friday, January 14, the Community Center held a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration with lunch
and entertainment. A special presentation was given by Dr. Ray Briggs, an Associate Professor of
Music and the Assistant Director of Jazz Music at California State University of Long Beach. There
were 44 participants in attendance.
