ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2022
Highlights: Los Angeles County Health Department came out with new guidelines for Covid-19
in the workplace. There were 17 staff members out in January either quarantining, isolating, or
waiting to get Covid tests when testing was hard to get in a timely manner. The Library and
Museum staff pivoted as they always do to continue to provide coverage at all four public desks.
Because of the high numbers of staff out, all in-person programming was pushed out to future
months or virtual programs were offered in their place, ensuring enough staff to cover the public
desks, phones, and getting items checked in and onto their respective shelves. The RFP for the
RFID project was made available, and three bids were received. Staff is working through the City’s
purchasing process as it relates to bids and contracts, with a recommended vendor to be
presented to City Council in March. The Southern California Library Cooperative, of which the
Library is a member, along with more than 40 other public libraries, announced the retirement of
Director Diane Bernarski, effective February 2022. She led the organization for the past two years
and is the liaison between public libraries, other cooperatives, the California State Library, and is
responsible for helping to secure grants and funding opportunities as well as membership
discounts for databases and other services through CALIFA.
Adult Programs, Classes, Technology Literacy, and Events: The Library’s first-ever
community wide, all ages reading challenge debuted in January. Throughout January, patrons
were encouraged to log the time they spent reading in
Beanstack. Arcadia competed as a community against other
communities for prizes including book collections, signed books,
and virtual author visits. Arcadia Public Library patrons read
25,475 minutes! The International Film Program has been
rebranded as The Movies You Missed and now includes movies
produced in the United States. Although an in-person program
was planned for January, Omicron Covid concerns moved the
program online. Patrons were encouraged to watch The Donut
King on Kanopy. The experience was rounded out with thought-
provoking questions that viewers could discuss with their friends
and family. Bookish kicked off 2022 with a discussion of Electric
Universe, by David Bodanis. A researcher who was trying to track down a rifle that was alleged
to have belonged to Chief Sitting Bull was led to the Pony Express Museum’s collections. Adult
Services Staff provided the researcher with some articles and pictures. Although the Library does
not have an inventory of the firearms that had been on display at the Pony Express Museum, staff
shared various leads to investigate. Paramount Studios had made a short film about the museum.
Some of the collection was sold to a "prop" house at Columbia Pictures, while most of the

collection was sold to Harrah's in Reno, Nevada, around 1955. Harrah's put up the collections for
auction in 1986 with Butterfield & Butterfield.
Teen Programing: Make-it or Bake-it aired at the end of the month. Teens learned how to create
their very own Chinese New Year firecrackers. There were 86 views of the program. Teen zone
will be starting in mid-February.
Children’s Programming and Services: Due to an increase in Omicron
Variant cases, all planned in-person programming for children were
changed to virtual events. Children’s Services staff hosted a virtual Lunar
New Year Lantern Workshop attended by twelve children who listened to
stories about new year traditions and the Chinese Zodiac, participated in
a lantern riddle activity, and made three different lantern crafts. There
were also four virtual early learning
programs provided throughout the
month. Staff began planning for the
2022 Summer at Arcadia Public
Library program. This year’s theme
will be The Great Reading Adventure
and the first related activity will be the annual Bookmark
Contest taking place from March 5 through April 16.
Customer Service: The 2021 tax forms began arriving and have been placed out for easy patron
access; inventory status information is proactively shared on social media. Passport Services
processed 119 passports, took 68 photos, and answered 210 questions. The Information System
Services team answered more than 241 computer/technical questions from patrons; assisted the
public with 887 public computer sessions, 624 print jobs, and the use of the Microfiche station,
public copiers, and the public Wi-Fi network.
Collections: Cataloging and Acquisitions has been working on the largely unheralded, but very
important, behind the scenes tasks that make it easier for customers and staff to find and use the
items they need. This month, for example, the Authority Database projects continue. This is part
of the routine work to keep APL’s databases and catalog up-to-date, consistent, and error-free.
Library staff has been weeding the collection with an eye to the RFID project due later this spring:
thoroughly weeding out old, non-circulating, damaged materials will not only improve the
customer experience, but will also save time and money during the conversion process. At the
request of Children’s Services, Staff ordered new plastic bags for the story time kits to hold book
props. Most of the collection was moved to the new bags with new labels. Staff began an annual
project to delete older circulating magazines. Staff is now adding records from such popular
databases as Kanopy, CreativeBug, GVRL, and Press Reader, to the Library Catalog. Additional
databases will be added to this list as they are available. The most popular item in the adult
collection this month was Shou xi yu yi: Di er ji, by Rongpeng Xie. The most popular title in the
Children’s collection again this month was the graphic novel Pokémon Adventures, by Hidenori
Kusaka. For teens, the top title was another repeat, the graphic novel Naruto, by Masashi
Kishimoto. The Library’s e-resources are increasingly popular. When Kanopy, the online movie
streaming resource, was new, staff were delighted to see that there were 95 views recorded in a
month: in January, there were 618 views! Customers engaged with Mango Languages for 98
sessions this month. The Children’s literacy resource Tumble Books, which provides complete
children’s books online and includes games and activities tied to each book, was used 471 times
in January and 465 times in December.
3
Facilities and Technology: The credit card reader at a recently upgraded computer station was
periodically disconnecting, which meant that staff were not able to process payments using that
machine. Information Systems staff monitored the situation and was able to resolve it. ISS also
worked with City IT to replace the last remaining Windows 7 PC’s located in the Account Services
public facing desks.
Staff and Training: The Library Technician recruitment culminated in first-round interviews in
mid-January and final interviews starting on January 31. Aide recruitments were well under way
in January, with interviews scheduled for February. There were 150 applications for the Aide
positions. Account Services currently has three Aide positions vacant, and Information Systems
has one. Adult Services staff attended a Do-It-Yourself Usability Testing class.
Community Outreach/Collaboration/Volunteers: Throughout the month teen volunteers
contributed 49.5 service hours to Children’s Services, helping to prepare 211 Lunar New Year
Lantern Kits to be distributed to children and their families as well as
reading stories aloud to kids during the Virtual Book Buddies program.
The Children’s Services librarian prepared and contributed an
informational video about Library services for middle schoolers as well
as a wellness booklist for the Arcadia Unified School District’s Middle
School Wellness Summit taking place in February. There were in-
person class visits from Holly Avenue Elementary School’s
transitional kindergarteners and first graders as well as students from
Arcadia High School. Book Balance, a wellness centered YA book discussion group, resumed at
Arcadia High School in January in a virtual format. Atomic Habits, by James Clear, was discussed.
Adult Services staff joined the Arcadia Historical Society Board and will be serving as Secretary.
Adult Services staff also attended meetings of the PTA at Arcadia High School, SCLC’s
Technology Committee, and consulted with the Oshkosh Public Library about the Calendly
scheduling software.
Marketing and Publicity: A Homework Resources bulletin board was added
to bulletin boards on community art, dinosaurs, and snowflakes in the
Children’s Room, while endcap displays featured Civil Rights leaders and
discussing racism with children, and book displays highlighted the cultures and
countries of Asia and Asian Americans. A special display case showed the
completed thousand paper cranes project. Adult Services’ bulletin board
featured the Winter Reading Challenge, while book displays showcased tea,
self-improvement, chilly reads and cozy meals. The Library’s social media
efforts reached 3,451 viewers in January.
